TWP with Wet on Wet Application Tips

TWP Stains are to be applied “Wet on Wet” when the wood is absorbent enough to handle more than 1 coat of the stain. This is typically for wood and decking that is older than 12 months and has been exposed to the elements. Applying the TWP “wet on wet” is similar to applying 1.5 coats of stain. The second coat covers twice as much square footage as the first coat.

Applying TWP “wet on wet” is very easy and not complicated once you understand the simple steps.

How To Apply TWP Wood Stains “Wet On Wet” to a Deck:

  1. Apply the TWP to the verticals first. This would include the railings, benches, and any vertical walls.
  2. Lightly apply one coat of stain to the horizontal flooring. Apply to the entire floor surface. If your deck has multiple levels, do one level at a time before moving to the next level.
  3. Wearing shoes that are disposable, walk back onto the “wet” stain and reapply another coat to the “tops” of and railings, walls, and benches. You may walk on your first coat of stain 10 minutes after finishing.
  4. Apply your second coat of stain to the horizontal flooring. Take care to not step in or leave footprints in your second coat!
  5. Finish stairs last, repeating the above steps.

TWP Staining Tips

  • Do not apply 2 coats of stain to new wood or decking or to recently sanded wood that was sanded finer than 60-80 grit as the TWP stain may not be able to fully absorb into the wood.
  • In most cases, a second coat only needs to be applied to horizontals as the verticals will last twice as long.
  • Apply your second coat of stain within 10-60 minutes of the first coat.
  • Watching for puddling on the floor. This usually happens under railings and benches.
  • Wear shoes and clothes that are disposable. Do not wear shoes that have black soft rubber soles. The TWP can “soften” these soles, leaving black residue marks on your deck if you step in the stain.
  • TWP Wood Stains can be applied with a stain pad, brush, roller, or sprayer.

I have cantilevered beams extending 5′ from my home and supporting a deck (decking has been removed and the beams are exposed.) I have sanded old stain off, cleaned and brightened the wood. After it has dried 48 hours, how many coats of TWP 1500 should I apply? Wet on wet? Or dry between coats.

It’s a beautiful day today and construction of the new deck flooring will begin tomorrow. I’d like to stain the 37 year old beams today while I can stil easily access them. They have been sanded with 80 grit to bare wood cleaned and brightened (finished two days ago.) I have TWP 1500 Pecan stain-should I apply one coat or two, and if two, wet on wet or dry between coats? Thanks for your answer.

I have composite decking flooring and am now replacing my railing & stairs with KDAT (KIln Dried After Treatment) Pressure Treated wood with metal balusters. I have been told KDAT lumber can be stained after 3 months, or even less time. How long should I wait to stain KDAT wood and what pre-treatment do you recommend for TWP 100 Cape Cod Gray stain.

My painter used the wrong color stain on my deck. He used Cedar Tone and I wanted Dark Oak. It’s a new deck and the stain has been on for less than a week. Can I use Dark Oak on top of the Cedar Tone or does it have to be removed? He also used the Cedar Tone on the handrails which should have been painted white. Can you offer any suggestions on how I can fix his mistake? I will have to hire someone else to complete the job and I want them to get it right the first time. Thanks for any info you can provide.

Thanks so much for responding so quickly. The painter did not follow the new wood instructions. This is a new deck and has been up for less than a month. The contractor who handled the entire process should have known this info but I guess it’s up to me now to find someone else who can correct the problem.

Hello – I purchased TWP 101 Cedartone along with the deck cleaner and brightener. We have since cleaned and brightened our 11 month old dock and now waiting for it to dry. If you don’t mind I have a few questions and confirmations :
– We plan on applying one coat because of the age of the dock. Is that correct?
– Given that we are in South Florida and it is tough to get a string of “dry” days, I wanted to be sure the minimums required. We plan on waiting 48 hours to dry and hoping rain will no occur after we start since it says a few days after as well. Any guidance on what we should absolutely ensure happens with timing?
– I purchased the brush to apply the stain. Given that the brush is pretty wide, is there a recommended way to have the brush access the stain when applying it? (roller tray, etc.)

Thanks for all the help and guidance.

Well after 12 hours the 2nd coat is still wet, I find myself on your lovely website Q&A learning about “Wet on Wet”. My 2 mistakes are clear after reading instructions. I have the following project. We live in Boston. I have Approx 350 ft of old cedar fence, 6ft high, in my yard (15+years old), but most of the wood is in good shape. I don’t know if it was every stained or cleaned at any point (appears not). My goal, is to get a few more years out of this fence prior to selling the home. Have some weak posts that needs fixed, but going to go with cleaning and staining. Prior to coming across your site with lots of helpful info, I decided to buy 30 second outdoor cleaner, applied with pump sprayer followed by power washing. Overall, the approach has pretty dramatic results cleaning the wood, but its a lot of work, and i’ve just gotten done with this inside and working around the outside, which seems to be going faster. The power washer has roughed up the surface pretty good in some spots, but the old crud was thick. My questions are the following.
1. Given the amount of cleaning done already, does this need further prep work prior to applying TWP 1500? If so what would you suggest? (you can see pics)
2. How many coats do you suggest for such an old fence? It will help improve appearance of the home, but it is a fence in the end so not sure if it needs 2 coats as not walking on it, but don’t wanna waste all the effort.
3. I have a stain sprayer. Will it also need to be back brushed? Could I use roller after the sprayer?
4. Given it has a nice light color now that its cleaned, we want to retain the lightest color available. I’ve ordered some samples, but would appreciate suggestions. I was thinking honeytone maybe.
5. We have some big pine trees on once side of the fence. And i’m thinking of just leaving that side of the fence as will be huge pain, if not impossible to get behind the trees to clean/stain fence. Any major issue just doing one side? Or what if I change mind and do it later down the road if trees get cleaned up.
6. What timeeline would it be to order/ship/receive the order?
7. Minimum temperature for applying stain?
Thanks so much, appreciate any guidance. Andy in Boston.

What I know of my deck history is: 6 years old, weathered for 1 year, stain and prep unknown lasting 2 years with pealing, stain and prep again unknown lasting another 2 years with pealing. I decided to power wash and sand which has taken the summer to do due to schedule, weather, and physical limitations. Some areas have grayed. In Wisconsin and weather now cooling at night 50’s down to 30’s at times. Most mornings now tend to have condensation on the deck. Would I be better off letting the staining go until next year vs risk getting wet overnight prior to drying? Clean and brighten prior to stain? One coat vs wet/wet? Also can I use foam brushes for the TWP 101?

My husband has completely sanded down our deck and got the old water base stain off. It has been sanded down to look brand new, all old stain is completely gone. We are ready to start staining with a brush. Do we need two coats of stain? I’m thinking yes. And if it puddles at all do we go over it with a clean brush to smooth out any uneven stain after it has both coats of stain? Is it okay to walk on it to get those areas that puddle? Or how would we go about doing so?

I just applied TWP 100 Pro to my Ipe deck in N Michigan. I put penofins down last fall and had to strip it off, let it dry before application one week ago.

It looks damn good but I think the wood was dry enough that I might be wise to put on a second coat before it gets cold this fall. Is that ok?

I used the natural version because I like the look.

Also, if I want to put down TWP with pigment next summer can I just clean and put it down?

I live in Florida and a month ago friends built me a cedar pergola and a large raised flower bed, also out of cedar. The raised bed is smooth-cut cedar, but the pergola is rough-cut western cedar except for the four 6×6 posts which are that beautiful two-toned red cedar, freshly rough-cut at a sawmill in Kentucky with some of the bark still on the corners of the posts.
Since the pergola is all rough-cut, can I go ahead and stain it as soon as we get a day without rain in the forecast, and I assume I don’t need to prep it?
The smooth raised bed I understand will need to wait a few months more. Is the stain OK for use on the outside of the bed in which are planted flowers and vegetables? I would also like to stain the inside top rim. And will I need to use your prep kit on the raised bed before staining it?

Used TWP 100 Series 2 years ago 1st time staining it was a new deck. Prepped for the 2nd coat a few weeks ago. First we cleaned. After cleaning I lightly sanded then used the brightener on the deck. Was going to stain but found out my stain has gone bad (it’s been 2 years). Just ordered new stain with cleaner and brightener kit. My question is when I get my stain can I just stain or do I need to redo the cleaning and brightening steps again since 3-4 weeks will have passed since my clean, sand, brightening steps? I live in MN if that makes any difference.

I am building some outdoor furniture from KDAT (kiln dried after treatment) 5/4 pressure treated southern yellow pine. Since this wood has been kiln dried to a low moisture content, would I be able to stain immediately using TWP 100 before placing the furniture outside, or does it still need to weather? Would sanding all the wood components to a particular grit level remove the mill gaze and open the pores of the wood enough to better accept the stain even though it has not yet weathered?

Brandon

Reply to  TWP Help

How bad is it to sand? We have a 5-7 month old (guessing based on move in time) yellow wood deck that I’m currently half way through sanding because the builders splashed paint everywhere on it and basically ruined it. I’m sanding with 80 grit to not close the pores. My goal was to finish sanding and then use your stain to protect it.

Will this be ok?

TWP,

I’m looking to re-stain my deck using your TWP1500 product. I live in Alexandria, Louisiana.

Deck is made from Southern Treated Pine #2. The wood is about 2.5 years old. I stained it about 2 years ago using TWP 1520 Pecan Stain. The last two summers have been brutal on deck and deck shows black spots and faded area’s. Looking to re-stain deck using same stain as before (TWP 1520).

Right now, I’m doing some must need repairs to deck (deck is 16′ x 41′ w/ hand rails) before re-staining deck.

Looking for guidance on prepping and staining procedure.
Any and all suggestion appreciated.

Sincerely,
DLS

Cedar deck and porch new in August 2019. (Iowa) What is the difference between 100 series and 1500 series? Recommend one over the other? I know this question has surely been asked a bunch of times. However, the answers are a little difficult to search and find exactly. I installed a new western red cedar fence in mid-willamette valley Oregon three weeks ago. The wood was surprisingly dry when I installed and it has been in the 80’s plus since.

1. When is the best time to apply stain after installing new wood like this?
2. How long after pressure washing with cleaner/brightener should I wait to stain?
3. What is the best application method and your recommendation for staining a fence (spray, roller, brush, other)?
4. Do you recommend 2 coats wet on wet for new wood fence, or not?
5. We ordered five samples of TWP stain and really want something between pecan and black walnut (I know, big range). What we really want is a medium brown (less red, orange, yellow). The dark oak isn’t quite right either. Is there a medium brown color available? We were recommended the 1500 series for our area and on a fence.

Thank you!

I have 240′ of western red cedar fence. Approx. 140′ has previously been treated with an oil based stain, so will need to be stripped and brightened I believe. The remaining 100′ is new wood. I also need to treat both sides.

1. Can you help me calculate how much total stain I need, along with stripper, cleaner and brightener for the appropriate areas?
2. Is it safe to say that the darker the color, the more protection? We are looking at the semi transparent 1500 in either Pecan or Dark Oak.

Thank you

(pic attached) A Honduran Mahogany porch was stained with a NY formula competitor (semi-) transparent stain a number of years ago. I decided not to go to the effort of stripping/cleaning and re-coating because I saw that, usually at board seams/meets, the stain was flaking off (and it started pretty quickly) Other places (with more traffic, eg stoop to door) also did that and got weathered to gray across the face of the boards.

Can TWP handle/penetrate the tight grain of NWMahog? I’d like to not repeat the flaking with TWP. In the attached you can see the flake lines following the board lengths. In general, can flaking be due to not enough wipe up during application? if so, how does that impact a wet-on-wet sitch? and on a tight-grain wood? boy, i’m heading down a rabbit-hole here, sorry.

Should the old stain be sanded away before app’ing 1500?

Will multiple coats build up a shine to the stained surface (At least until the weather gets at it for a few months)?

I don’t see a stain color called “Mahogany”. Is there somewhere on the TWP site I can see the available colors for relative color wheel settings, rather than just the text on the sample order page?

thanks to you.

HI again, You say “Only one coat of the…1500” Are you steering me away from the wet-on-wet process? Because of the type of wood/grain? or…? And the one coat is good for time until/2 years or so before a re-coat is indicated?

I understand your wet on wet application instructions, but I have a few questions. I am female, almost 70 years old and my deck is giant. It mentioned in the instructions to apply 2nd coat 10-60 minutes after the first. There is physically no way I can do this on the whole deck that quick. Some of my boards are very long. If i did two boards at a time and go all the way down each board and then waited a few minutes and did the 2nd coat on those two boards and just kept repeating that pattern across the top of the deck would that work? I want to make sure the color comes out even.
I live in Dallas, Tx. It is really starting to get hot here. I am ordering stain samples today and will place my order as soon as I get my samples and decide which color. My wood is 4-5 yr old red cedar and has never been stained. I have sanded every inch of it using 60 grit sandpaper and plan to clean and brighten before I stain.

Thank you for your help

Sandra

There is a chance of rain in the forecast tomorrow at 4p. Can I put on second coat in the morning and finish up by 10a? I have a 10 x 10 cedar deck that was stained with Woodsman semi-transparent oil based stain about 3 years ago. The finish did not wear very well. I have cleaned my deck with a deck cleaner and then completely sanded off the previous finish from the railings and deck horizontal boards. I used a detail sander with 80 grit sandpaper to rough up the spindles and vertical support posts – the old finish has not been completely removed from the spindles and support posts. Which TWP stain product do you recommend I use to stain my deck? 1 coat or 2 coats? Can I use this product on the vertical supports and spindles, even though the previous finish has not been completely removed from the spindles & support posts. I don’t want the new finish to peel or flake off. I live in the Kansas City,MO area, my deck has a roof covering the deck and gets mostly morning sun, the afternoon is basically shaded until about 6 p.m. Should I use a TWP stain color close to the previous finish color? What will the lightly sanded spindles, etc. look like with the TWP stain i.e. darker than the horizontal deck boards??? Also, I have a few grease pots on the cedar deck floor boards where food from the grill rolled off the grill and landed on the wood. What can I use to remove the oily stain? I’m sorry this is such a ridiculously long question, but I really don’t want to mess up the new finish and have to do it again. In 3 years or so, when the deck needs to be stained again, can I just power wash it and then use the same TWP product to recoat the deck?

Do I use the RAD Stripper and add the Gel and Booster products to the stripper? The gel additive says that it will cling to vertical surfaces for up to 1 hour. Once I’m finished with the stripper do I use the Brightener on all surfaces? Does the Brightener go on the deck surfaces while the deck is wet from powerwashing the stripper products? Will the Stripper with the added Booster and Gel still be applied with a sprayer or is it too thick to spray? or Is it best to apply the combined stripper products with a brush to vertical surfaces???

Would you please confirm the steps I need to take?
1. Spray water on shrubs/landscaping and cover with plastic
2. Mix Stripper, Booster & Gel product and apply with a pump sprayer (how long should this sit before rinsing off? Using a stiff brush loosen the old deck stain and then thoroughly rinse with power washer no more than 1000 psi. with fan sprayer nozzle
3. Immediately apply Brightener to the deck with a pump sprayer
4. Allow Brightener to sit approx. 15 minutes before rinsing off Brightener
5. Allow deck to dry completely – at least 48 hours
6. Apply 1 coat of TWP stain and allow to dry completely (how long before furniture can be returned to deck and can I walk on it?)
7. Next time I need to stain (a few years from now), just use the cleaner, brightener and then stain away????

Thank you! I know this must get really old answering all these questions! Have a great day!
