Need Help Choosing TWP 1500 Colors?
TWP 1500 Series is available in 9 semi-transparent color choices that penetrate into the wood while enhancing the natural wood grain. The 1500 Series is higher in solids content which may result in “richer” colors than the 100 Series. In general, the 1500 Series color will not match the colors in the 100.
See here: TWP 1500 Series Photo Albums
Take into consideration that colors are not exact and will vary due to:
- Wood Species
- Age of Wood
- How the wood is prepped
Please read this article that explains the TWP 1500 Colors in more detail. If you have any questions, please ask below.
TWP 1501 Cedartone is the most popular color in the 1500 Series. It is a brownish/cedar color that is darker than the 100 Series Cedartone. TWP 1501 Photos
TWP 1502 Redwood is a very rich red color. TWP 1502 Photos
TWP 1503 Dark Oak highlights your wood with a rich Dark Brown. This color is very popular with consumers who are looking to stray away from the cedar and reddish color choices. TWP 1503 Photos
TWP 1504 Black Walnut is a stunning dark brown color. Very unique but loved by consumers! TWP 1504 Photos
TWP 1511 is a great color. This is a lighter red color that is not as dark or rich as the 1502 Redwood. TWP 1511 Photos
TWP 1515 is the lightest color in this series. This color will highlight the grain of your wood with golden tones. TWP 1515 Photos
TWP 1516 is a very popular red color as the red tones are highlighted with a slightly brown tone. TWP 1516 Photos
TWP 1520 is one of the 2 newest colors for the 1500 Series. This color is a lighter brownish/cedar color of the 1501 Cedartone. TWP 1520 Photos
TWP 1530 was introduced to resemble the 101 Cedartone Natural color. This color is not a “Clear”. This color is a traditional cedar color that highlights your wood grain with Caramel/Golden Tones. TWP 1530 Natural Photos
Feel free to ask any questions in the comment area below.
We just finished our deck staining with TWP 1500 1530 natural. We chose this stain because it looks more natural, Golden/caramel but the finished stain has an orange tone to it. Do you have any tips to tone down the orange?
You cannot “tone” down the color once applied. You would have to remove and start over if you wanted to do this. Adding Dark Oak into the Natural would accomplish this.
Thank you! I don’t dislike the color- I just didn’t think it would pull so much orange. I’m assuming that comes from the species of wood uses as well?
Wood type and age. The color is normal for this.
I am in Southern California, I have a redwood fence that is about 7 years old that I never maintained once it was built and stained with penofin. Over time it is very dry and very dark. I power washed it, sanded the front and also cleaned it with penofin wash. I actually read that TWP is a better product than penofin because penofin has issues with black coloring happening over time (which I have) . My question is , I am undecided on TWP 1500 coloring . I have some new panels of wood that I am using as privacy on my block wall That will be mounted next to my redwood gate. Which TWP would match best, Rustic or Pecan?
That wood is teak (os similar) and you can’t get the redwood to match. If I had to choose, I would suggest Pecan 1520 and the Rustic will be much redder in color.
Ok, thanks. I was concerned that Rustic would be too red which is why I was thinking Pecan. Has anyone ever blended the 2 together? I don’t need a complete match, I am just wanting them to not clash.
Yes, you can blend them together.
So I was afraid to combine two colors and chose to go with pecan. It seems to be really yellow/orange vs. brownish . I put 2 coats on in the evening a couple of days ago. I am wondering if I can put a coat or 2 of a different color that might mute the orange/yellow? (The bottom piece needs more coats for some reason , I just have not reopened the pecan can again, yet)
The color is correct for your wood type. You cannot add a darker color over top as it will not soak in and will have issues drying and curing.
Would it do the same thing if I have to do another coat on the bottom board? When I was staining it looked like I had enough stain on everywhere but the next day it looked like barely any on the bottom and some on top beam as well were not well stained.
You can touch those boards with one light coat of the same color.
Hi there. We are in Southwest Missouri and looking to stain 2 brand new cedar fences in our front yard and also the back deck which is about 2 years old. The fences will be exposed to UV rays, back deck not as much. The first picture is the fence, with a sample of the color we are looking for, and the second picture is also the color that we are looking to achieve (on someone else’s house). Do you recommend 100 or 1500 series, and if so, what color? I can supply more pictures if needed. Thank you!!
See here about new wood: https://twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
After the wait and prep, look at the Pecan color in the 1500 Series.
5 year old cedar white cedar deck (previously stained) now sanded bare – 50 grit. Do I use Twp 100 or Twp 1500 product line to re-treat
Where do you live?
Deck is in centralPennsylvania
Use the TWP 1500 for PA.
In pesssylvania
I have some 10 year old log cabin cedar siding, we just moved here and I don’t think it has ever been redone or stripped. I read the advice for how to strip and prepare the logs, I was just wondering if using that process and this stain will be enough color for this kind of damage or what I can expect. Will the tones probably just be a little darker from the weather wood, and what would be the best color. It is currently a kind of cedartone looking.
Post pictures.
The siding
Use this kit with both additives: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail

The stain will work well in any color you choose.

Okay, thank you, I was a little worried it was too bad off to do much about.
I’m in Minnesota. I have a treated pine deck that I’m doing this year and a cedar deck that I need to stain next year. Do I do 100 series or 1500?
TWP 100 Series.
Hi! I just had my 10 year old deck stained with Honeytone. It’s beautiful. The wood had aged quite a bit, so the effect is a little darker. One deck board had to be replaced. It’s new PTP. It stands out! Is it possible to go over the new board with maybe Pecan to help it blend better? Would a mix of Honeytone and another color be better? Thank you!
Sorry but no, it will not blend with a darker color.
What is the best penetrating stain for exterior Mahogany decking. Deck is 7-8 years old has had several different products used on it (supposedly top rated?) none which have stood up. Always P’washed prior to coating. This time it will be stripped and brightened. It’s in direct sun 50% to 60% of the day. Suggest a color please.
Thanks
Use the TWP 1516 Rustic.
You just recommended the 1500 product for top coating antique pine exterior beams. I want to preserve the wood and maintain the current grain and color.
I can find no dealer locally (BR, La) that carries the natural or clear products that I can test on my wood. I’m leaning toward natural for the UV protection (as the wood is already “antiqued”) but I do not want to significantly alter the wood color or grain.
How can I sample the two options on a piece of my wood?
Thanks for your help with this
It is not possible to preserve the current color with TWP. TWP comes tinted and the Clear will not work over it to prevent UV graying. The Natural is tinted. See colors here: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-1500-series-stain-colors-and-photo-albums/
I have been using the honey tone every 2 years, my deck is older and needs a darker coverage to hide some of the imperfections. I want to continue to use your product – what color would you suggest?
Try Pecan or Dark Oak.
Is the Natural 1530 a little lighter color than Cedartone 101?
Trying to decide if I need to order some Clear to mix?
About the same in color. Honeytone is the lightest tint.
OK…so is TWP 100 series high VOC better than 1500 series with more pigment & mildicide for humid VA/NC area climate or about the same?
About the same. Both have mildewcide as well.
I’m trying to decide on the best color to stain Adirondack chairs. Do you have any suggestions?
Colors are your preference. See photos for help: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-1500-series-stain-colors-and-photo-albums/
Can I obtain a color chip sample…I am trying to match existing color of rails that do not need stained?
We have liquid samples on this link: https://www.twpstain.com/stain-samples
I have a new redwood fence. I want to retain the new wood look. What product do you suggest??
See this about new wood: https://twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
The stain must be tinted of you want to prevent UV graying. Look at the lighter TWP colors: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-1500-series-stain-colors-and-photo-albums/
Can I mix an oldies can of 511 with a new can of 1511??
As long as the 511 is still good.
Thanks!
I have a previously treated Mangaris deck that is in good shape, 12 years old. I’m thinking about applying the 1500 rustic tone stain after cleaning and brightening. I live in the Rocky Mtn in Montana. Does this sound ok??
Yes, just one coat.
I have a new cedar deck that is only 4 months old. I’d like to stain it with the 1500 natural stain but being that this is my first time using wood stain I want to make sure I do it right. Should I wait longer for the wood to dry out and age a bit more before I stain it? I’m in the pacific Northwest and Mid-July to Sept are about our only consistently dry months so I’m hesitant to let it go unstained longer than than for fear of moss or mildew setting in. Moss grows on everything here.
You can do it now: https://twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Is it safe to use 1500 on cedar planter boxes for a vegetable garden?
Yes, it is.
I want to restain my really old deck (redwood), which has had the TWP “rustic” color in the past. The color has faded over the years and I would like to lighten the color a lot more, but I don’t want to go into the “yellow” honeytone color, but am seriously thinking the “Natural” (1500 series) color over the faded “rustic” would lighten. Does this make sense to do? and what prepping would be necessary? I really want the final color to be more of a beige or light brown or even real light pinkish red tone, recognizing that at this point there will be many shades and streaks appear due to how the new stain will be accepted over varying layers of old stain/wood. I’m not looking for anything perfect, just a lot lighter than the rustic color.
Appreciate your help and advice
You cannot “fade” a darker color with a lighter color. If you want to go lighter, you will need to strip and brighten for the prep. It comes off easy with this: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
any pictures of cedartone on mahogany wood
Sorry but we do not have any.
We have a mahogany deck that is greying a bit–we originally used a clear oil that preserved the natural brown. Give the greying we want to try out the 1500 as we live in Maine and recapture the original color (or get close). I am leaning toward the natural 1530. we do not want too much red. Any advice and are there sample sizes available so we can do a test patch? Thanks in advance for the help!
Samples are here: https://www.twpstain.com/stain-samples
Is there any tint that can be added to cedartone to make it slightly darker ( take the reddish tone out), but not as dark as pecan.
You can mix colors together of the same series.
Price difference between the 200 series and the 1500 series? also which is better to use on a log home being pressure washed and stripped from the old stain?
https://www.twpstain.com/twp-1500-series
https://www.twpstain.com/twp-200-series-5-gallon
Most use the TWP 1500 for log homes.
What do I have to do to change the color? The deck has TWP 1516 Rustic now I want to put TWP 1503 or 1504
Strip and brighten with this: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
I have used TWP before and really like its durability, but the color choices are insufficient for the design of our new house. Is there any way to modify the colors so we can get more choices by tinting. We are looking for some more gray tones similar to what are offered by other top stain manufacturers?
You can mix colors together of the same series but you cannot custom tint the TWP.
I have used Rustic TWP 100 (I am in MO) on my 15 yr old cedar deck for the last 8 years (4 applications). Two questions.
1. color – I am tired of the reddish color. If I go to a darker color, can I just do my regular clean and re-coat and hope that over the next few years it will darken or would I need to strip first to get the darker color to take? I have a lot of posts, railings etc and I am hoping I can just go over the top?
2. Part of my deck is under roof and the other out in the open. the portions under roof have a better finish (solid in color) vs the portion that get’s sun (I face south). I guess it fades faster out in the sun. I always refinish both at the same time, but I almost feel like the covered portions are just building up. To go to a darker color, would have I to strip the covered portion if it has built up finish?
1. Strip and brighten it is the best way to change colors.
2. Yes. Strip all.
WHAT STAIN IS BEST FOR A PHILLAPINE MAHOGONY DECK?
Try the TWP 116 Rustic color.
We stained our pressure treated wood deck with TSP Rustic a few years ago but it’s too red looking and I would like to change it. We still have 3 gallons of Rustic stain, is there anything we can add to the stain to lighten it?
Thanks!
You can mix colors of the same series together to achieve a custom color of your choice.
We have a new cedar deck (not pressure treated) that was completed in December, and we want to use TWP 1500 series Clear wood preservative to seal . However, after reading your specifications and instructions on your website and paint can, I do have questions. Has this been long enough time frame to apply (the can says wait 4-12 months ) and we have had several rains since then as well. And is it necessary to clean with bleach before application on clean deck? Thank you for your help.
You will need to wait for the 4-12 months. Yes, you have to prep. See this for more info: https://twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
In 2015, I replaced my deck. I stained my new deck with Olympic Elite Semi solid deck stain. Colors were Chestnut brown for the deck floor and Fall follage for the deck trim and built in seats. After prepping my deck his year for new sealant, can I use the TWP and what colors would you suggest.
As long as you remove all of the Olympic stain, then you can use the TWP. Any color you like will work.
can TWP be used indoors on trim and doors
No it is not designed for this.
We are looking to get traditional type stain that will make oak boards for exterior fencing near black. Samples of black walnut are not dark enough. Is there a blend you can make or recommend? Thanks.
Sorry, but it is not possible to make the TWP any darker than the 1504 Black Walnut.
Are you going to make a gray-ish tone in you 1500 series?
Also, I am torn between the natural and pecan. The stain is going on a brand new home that has cedar planks.
Thank you.
No grays as of yet. Both Natural and Pecan are very nice. We would suggest looking at our photo albums: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-1500-series-stain-colors-and-photo-albums/
have 5 gals of Natural 1530…I wish it was clear, so the cedar can look weathered more naturally. What color can I mix to achieve a grayish weathered look. particularly for the side of the barn that nobody can really see.
You cannot make the Natural “clear” to the point that it will achieve a grayish weathered look.
yes of course.. I mentioned clear because that would be my dream… My goal is to make it look grey like weather cedar. If I buy a can of???? and mix it?
You cannot make it gray either. There is nothing that can be added that will turn it gray.
Hello, We have a new deck pine deck that we let age for 1 1/2 years. We are ready to clean and stain. We want to use your products. Our wood has naturally grayed. We like the color and want to keep it naturally graying. Any suggestions?
Thank you!!!
Use the Gemini Restore Kit for the prep. Use the 1500 Clear if you want the wood to naturally gray.
I just bought a 5 gal of Twp 1501 semi transparent and applied it to a couple boards on the underside, the color is lighter than I expected. Can I tint the stain darker? I live in an HOA and have to come closer to my neighbors deck colors which I believe are Flood Natural Cedar solid stained.
You cannot tint it darker but you can mix in a color from the 1500 series to darken what you have. Try the 1503 Dark Oak or 1504 Black Walnut. Probably only need a gallon or two.
Are these the only colors that you have? I am looking for a grey/tan combo.
We do not have a gray/tan in the 1500 Series.
How many applications do I need to apply?
Do I need to use a clear coat on top?
Two coats applied wet on wet: https://twpstainhelp.com/twp-stain-wet-on-wet-application/
You cannot apply a clear top coat on the TWP.
can 1500 be applied over 100 series
If switching series, use this for the prep: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
what is prep to apply 1500 over 100 series?
I have a newly installed cedar picket fence. I really like the color as it is, and I am wondering if the 1500 or 100 CLEAR stain will protect the color of the pickets? Would I have to re-stain more often with the clear, or are there any other issues I should consider before going with the clear stain?
Hello, no the “Clear” doe not provide any UV protection. To achieve UV protection from graying, your deck or wood stain must be tinted. The tint is your UV filter.
which TWP 1500 color is closest to the Behrs semi-transparent deck stain “Sable” color?
Sorry, but we are not familiar with their colors. We do offer samples on our site: https://www.twpstain.com/stain-samples
My log house was last finished with cedar 101 and now have to use 1500 series since in live in PA. Which is the closest color match? Will the 1500 hold up as well as the 100?
The TWP 1530 Natural is closest to the TWP 101. It will hold up the same.
Just put the Dark Oak color on deck..my pressure treated wood was 7months new..we power washed it 1st,waited a day, then stained it, both days was 83 degrees with no rain for next 4days. Will my deck color be close to sample?
Close but new wood is less absorbent and not sure you prepped correctly to remove the mill glaze.
Ok..thankyou..deck looks good tho but only 2nd day..parts of wood still alittle wet but most is dry..is that when it was applied heavier in some areas or the wood absorbed more or less of stain?
It should even out after a few more days. It could because you over applied or the prep was not correct.
Please provide a sample of the faded blue previously shown on your site by return email
Sorry but not sure what you mean?
My new deck was stained w1503 approx 15 mos ago. It in veryy good shape but the floor planks have faded. What prep is required restrain with the same product?
Light cleaning with the Gemini Restore Kit and one coat of the TWP 1503.
I’m going to sand cedar deck to remove 1 yr old Zar product. Probably put on 1500 series pecan or cedartone.
After sanding, do I need to do anything before staining. Do I need to “brighten”. Never have done this. What does this actually do for the freshly sanded wood?
Best to use the Gemini Restore Kit after the sanding as your final prep before applying the TWP 1500 Series.
What is the difference between TWP 100 series and TWP 1500?
See this please: https://www.twpstain.com/difference-between-twp-100-and-1500-series
Will the TWP 1520 lift off on clothing.
TWP is a penetrating stain that fully cures as long as the wood is applied correctly and the stain is not over-applied,
Where is the grey semi-transparent?
Hello, the 100 and the 200 Series have gray colors. Not the 1500 Series.
