Need Help Choosing TWP 1500 Colors?

TWP 1500 Series is available in 9 semi-transparent color choices that penetrate into the wood while enhancing the natural wood grain. The 1500 Series is higher in solids content which may result in “richer” colors than the 100 Series. In general, the 1500 Series color will not match the colors in the 100.

See here: TWP 1500 Series Photo Albums

Take into consideration that colors are not exact and will vary due to:

  • Wood Species
  • Age of Wood
  • How the wood is prepped

Please read this article that explains the TWP 1500 Colors in more detail. If you have any questions, please ask below.

I have a cedar deck that was installed last summer. I have waited for it to cure and will be using deck cleaner and brightener before I stain with TWP 1500. I’m not sure what to do with the risers, though. They appear to be coated with primer. Do i need to strip them or will the cleaner and brightener be ok before staining? Here’s a pic. Thanks!

After applying the pecan Twp stain the resulting color is very orange. The deck was cleaned and sanded to remove prior stain prior to using the Twp. Stain was just applied yesterday. Will this orange color fade?

Hi. Is the UV protection effective for the same duration in the Natural, Honeytone or Cedartone; or would one of them protect color longer? I’d like to keep our fence a light tone but the Fla sun faded our [previously] sealed fence’s color fast.

We have a clear cedar wood fence that was put in around 17-18 years ago, and at the time we put a clear sealant on it. It has not been treated since and is in good shape. We were thinking of using the Honeytone to be able to see the grains in the clear wood. Does it need any prep since it has been so long since the clear was put on it?

Is this Dark Oak, TWP 1503? It’s a photo from the TWP site, but does not indicate the name of the stain.

Hi, 20 year old log cabin, past owners used “used motor oil” so the color is darkish.
We will wash and treat with borate. What stain/sealer product would you suggest?

I’m stripping old stain off of 25 yr. old cedar siding – horizontal lap board and tongue-n-groove vertical board. I’m cleaning the wood as much as possible by doing a four step process; using a stripper/remover, a cleaner, hand scrubbing and power washing. The cleaned siding looks very good when completed. We would like a satin type finish versus a matte finish. I just purchased samples of the TWP 1500, 1502 Redwood and 1516 Rustic. Any thoughts on what I described above…thank you.

I have a redwood deck that is about 30 years old and still sound. I used to treat it wit CWF every 4 years or so. However I have not done it in over 15 years. We would like to cover it with a semi or transparent stain in deader or redwood shade. The deck has two levels, one level by the diving boad and another lover. I cleaned the dirt on the uper level with 1 cup of tips 1 cup of Clorox and 1 gallon of water and it came out good. What TWP stain would you suggest. I live on Long Island New York

We have an outside kitchen with rough cedar cabinets under a covered roof. I personally don’t think the natural cedar color goes with the house and would like something like dark oak or black walnut (our inside cabinets are dark stained and are in sight of the outside cabinets). Will the rough cedar soak the stain too much? And if it is under a roof, how often will it need to be restained? Thanks for the advice!

I live in Albuquerque, NM, 5,200 ft, elevaton, lots of UV, full sun, I am sanding a redwood deck to bare wood. Deck 25 years old, sanded before. good condition, some boards cracked or splitting a little. I want to have no greying, no darkening of color(like Penofin does). What do I have to do to keep it looking nice? without re-sanding or stripping? I like the color and the way the wood grain shows through on the TWP 1500 Redwood. The TWP 100 seems darker on your color online. What do you advise? Thank you, Margy

I have a 6 year old Weathershield pine deck (MIcronated Copper Azole) power washed and brightened with clorox and rinsed clean. planning to use TWP 1500 in NJ. Is one coat sufficient. I don’t want a shiny finish.

just installed a redwood deck in Aptos CA. The wood was fairly wet, and I live in an area about 1 mile from the ocean, lots of foggy mornings. I want to treat the wood but have two questions. How long do I wait before attempting to stain, and which color will the leave the wood as close to its current color?

Is it advisable to apply twp 1502 redwood semi transparent 1500 series over a deck previously stained with a solid stain. We have scraped and sanded what we could but there is still some color left in some places.

Or do you carry a solid stain I could use?

I’m trying to calculate the amount of TWP that I’ll need to order. The deck and stairs total just under 800 square feet (no railings). The wood is redwood. It’s been stripped with restore-a-decks stripper, sanded to remove essentially all the stain and smooth the boards down to nice bare wood. Then gemini deck brightener has been applied. The wood is of unknown age, but probably about 15 years old. It is in generally good condition except for a few boards that have some cracks running in them. Your online calculator suggests 8 gallons for two coats wet on wet (but your site warns not to apply too much).

Can you advise me on the proper amount to order?
What should the time interval be between coats?
How do you when you’ve applied enough?
What is the best way to remove any excess stain?

Thanks

I’m torn between TWP 1500 and another highly rated stain that is water based. We have metal ballusters with plastic caps that will most likely get stain on them. Is the TWP easy to clean from them (and siding)? Also, we’re looking for good UV protection but don’t want anything too dark (brown) or too red. Suggestion? I had gotten TWP samples before but the Cedartone section had faded.

I received 5 gal. of TWP 1500 in Black Walnut. It was too dark. I ordered 2 gal. of TWP 1500 in Honeytone to lighten the Black Oak. I intended to take the Honeytone and mix Black Walnut into it to get a rich brown color. As I am thinking about it I am afraid the two colors mixed might have a green tinge to it. Can you tell me what color I will get if I do this. Thanks so much for your quick respose. As I have to do this tomorrow!!

Can the 1515 (honeytone) be darkened by adding another 1500 color?

Rob

I want to preserve and highlight the color of my new rough cut western red cedar siding. The “cedar” color looks too brown from the pictures. What is the lightest color semi-transparent that still carries all of the TWP1500 protection (like UV / anti-graying)? I prefer 1530:natural but figured I would need to go with 1515: Honeytone to keep the protection.

Thanks!

I have a twenty-year-old cedar-sided home in Austin Texas. The front of the house gets full western sun and the back and sides are mostly covered by trees. I put on DEFY about ten years ago and re-did just the front with TWP about five years ago. The TWP is much better for Texas than the DEFY. The color was not cedar, but some type of honey or gold color. Now the house is being cleaned and re-stained. The new cedar window frames have already been done in 1515 Honeytone. They did not absorb very well. (I just read the post about new wood) The old wood is much darker already even after being cleaned. Should I use honeytone 1515 on the house to try to more or less match the window frames? The dealer told me that the honeytone would not last nearly as long as other colors, and that I would be wasting my money using it. He said I should use cedartone and strip the window frames to match. Is it true that honeytone color have a shorter life than the cedartone? Thank you!

i have a 10 year old pressure treated deck. It gets afternoon sun, and was stained 3 years ago with an oil based stain, semi-transparent.. Australian Timber Oil. I am confused as to whether I should order from the 100 series or the 1500 series. I need a browner than red color.Deck is in good condition and will be cleaned and brightened first. Please advise as to which series is best in Upstate South Carolina. Thanks!
