Need Help Choosing TWP 1500 Colors?
TWP 1500 Series is available in 9 semi-transparent color choices that penetrate into the wood while enhancing the natural wood grain. The 1500 Series is higher in solids content which may result in “richer” colors than the 100 Series. In general, the 1500 Series color will not match the colors in the 100.
See here: TWP 1500 Series Photo Albums
Take into consideration that colors are not exact and will vary due to:
- Wood Species
- Age of Wood
- How the wood is prepped
Please read this article that explains the TWP 1500 Colors in more detail. If you have any questions, please ask below.
TWP 1501 Cedartone is the most popular color in the 1500 Series. It is a brownish/cedar color that is darker than the 100 Series Cedartone. TWP 1501 Photos
TWP 1502 Redwood is a very rich red color. TWP 1502 Photos
TWP 1503 Dark Oak highlights your wood with a rich Dark Brown. This color is very popular with consumers who are looking to stray away from the cedar and reddish color choices. TWP 1503 Photos
TWP 1504 Black Walnut is a stunning dark brown color. Very unique but loved by consumers! TWP 1504 Photos
TWP 1511 is a great color. This is a lighter red color that is not as dark or rich as the 1502 Redwood. TWP 1511 Photos
TWP 1515 is the lightest color in this series. This color will highlight the grain of your wood with golden tones. TWP 1515 Photos
TWP 1516 is a very popular red color as the red tones are highlighted with a slightly brown tone. TWP 1516 Photos
TWP 1520 is one of the 2 newest colors for the 1500 Series. This color is a lighter brownish/cedar color of the 1501 Cedartone. TWP 1520 Photos
TWP 1530 was introduced to resemble the 101 Cedartone Natural color. This color is not a “Clear”. This color is a traditional cedar color that highlights your wood grain with Caramel/Golden Tones. TWP 1530 Natural Photos

I have pine log cabin with about 1200 square feet of pressure treated pine decking in SW PA, in wooded area next to creek. 600 square foot Top deck is partially covered. Bottom deck is directly below top deck and gathers mildew. Deck is 6 years old and has been treated once with a clear stain. It is now graying and showing wear. I plan to pressure wash, using bleach solution on mildewed area, and then applying TWP. Does this sound right? What TWP product do you recommend?
I’m not sure how old my deck is but it’s got wear, and a few spots rotted that I’ll need to replace. If I live in Virginia (not northern VA), should I go with 100 or 1500?
Just built a deck here is ontario canada! It’s using the new micropro sienna pressure treated wood. It was built in June, but looking to seal sooner than later (the wood is splitting already). Obviously harsh winters, and deck is full sun ! Don’t want to cover up the natural colour too much what do you suggest?
how brown is the Rustic color? Have a new redwood deck and really want to bring out the natural color, the description of Rustic sounds perfect. Not too much red but overall mainly redwood looking with hints of brown. Is that how it really is or is it more brown then red actually?
We just applied TWP 100 Rustic. It is pretty but a little more red than I expected. I would like it more brown and golden. Can I stain over top of it with pecan or cedar tone? Or do I have to strip it?
I had a new cedar fence installed last summer and am ready to stain it. I got samples of the cedartone and the redwood and was wondering if there is something in between the two. I’d like something a little darker/redder than the cedartone but not as dark as the redwood. Thanks.
Looking to stain a 15 year old deck made of atlantic white cedar which has been sanded to remove old stain. Which series do you recommend and any other prep work?
I have a 3 year old redwood deck in UTAH, that is subject to a lot of snow during the winter months. I stained it with Baer which lasted about 1 1/2 years, so I stripped it last year prior to the snow and ran out of time to stain it. Im ready to stain and wondering what you suggest, 100 or 1500 after I use your cleaner.
I have PALCO(Pacific lumber company) redwood siding on my home installed in 1984. Beveled, rough sawn, quarter inch thick at the top,one & a quarter inch thick at the bottom. All coatings in the past have been clear.Last coat was Cabot, Austrailian Timber Oil. Would like to keep as close to original color as possible.Your recommendation for prepping and TWP product to use?
I live in weatern NC and have a pressure treated deck. It is 9 yrs old. I put Cabot timberoil on it 3 years ago. I have cleaned and pressure washed. What is my next step? Which stain should I use?
I am staining a new deck of treated pine with cedar rail system. I live in Missouri where the use of TWP 100 is legal. If I use a TWP 100 product to stain my new deck, will I be able to use a TWP 1500 product later on without any problem should the State of Missouri prohibit the use of the 100 line?
This is my first time staining our deck on the rooftop of our condo building (so full sun exposure). I’m trying to come close to matching the color of another owner’s deck. He used BEHR Premium Natural Cedar Alkyd/Acrylic Weatherproofing Wood Finish on his deck. Behr is subpar from what I’ve heard so I want to go with TWP. His deck seems to have a slightly reddish appearance with some brown. Can anyone on here recommend which TWP color I should go with? I was thinking either the 1501 Cedartone or 1516 Rustic color comes close but correct me if I’m wrong.
Hello, might have been asked many times. In your color charts, are the sample colors a two coat rendition wet on wet. And is it a type of cedar wood. Thanks
What color TWP 1500 would be best over faded mahogany tongue in groove? Looks like Rustic to me, with reddish-brown tones?
Anyone know which Color would best match Sikkens Cetol 1 & 23 in the color 005 (natural oak). I am guessing 1530. Need to try a sample I’m thinking. Too many negative reviews of Sikkens SRD otherwise we would just use that….also we are planning on using an airless sprayer to apply knowing we will need to brush and roll behind….Sound ok?
I live in NY and want to stain my deck gray. You don’t seem to have a gray color in the TWP 1500 line. Are you planning to make one? Many thanks….
It is very hard to tell anything about your colors from the small images given. Can you provide real pictures of peoples decks to get a better idea of what colors look like? This would be much better and a more realistic sample.
what is the formula for calculating the amount of stain you need for a deck? Just pressure washed it and am going to purchase the clear stain
Hi, I have a new cedar fence and want the natural color and grain to show nicely without greying. What do you recommend? I live in Mass
Thanks
Last year we added treated pine porch and deck. We have to get the wood stained but I have a hard time picking colors. i am thinking to do railing and the raised deck area in one color and the lower levels of deck and porch floor in another color. The house is dark brown with Cottage red shutters and trim. Do you have any suggestions?
Which 1500 color is closest to TWP 205 California Cedar?
i recently stained my fence with TWP CedarTone Natural. I accidentally sprayed some on my neighbors composite decking that is no longer being made. Company was GAF out of Lenexa KS i believe. The color is grey. I have tried power washing, mineral spirits, simple green, other chemicals on a spot but no success. Any suggestions? They do not manufacturer the decking anymore. I believe the name was timber tech, woodland series. Thanks.
I have old western cedar that i have tried a few products to bring back the wood.what do you suggest for prep an color to cover up old looking wood Thanks
RE: Old deck stripped down to bare wood and new deck extended on to it. Will the new and old decks match if I use TWP? If not what do you suggest doing to get them to match in color?
Will non pressure wood be better for the replacement planks? Someone told me that it would take the stain better and putting a second coat of stain on those boards would make the color a little more even.
Would the rustic color be a good choice. Are there any photos of the color on new and old wood available?
I’m liking the cedartone color in the TWP 1500 series but don’t want the orange tint. Looking at the pecan color, will this tone down the orange color. I don’t want it to brown.
Have a deck that we replaced the floor but left the side rails which are dark oak color thinking about doing the floor in a lighter stain. What 1500 series would look best with a taupe color siding and brown rails was thinking Honeytone or Natural to go with Dark Oak on rails any suggestions?
I want to use TWP on a dock. What should I use 1500 or 100 series
I want to get the cedartone 1501 for my cedar deck.. Will my deck still grey or will it be uv protected.
I’m building in the mountains 1 hour north of Las Vegas, NV. The metal roof is antique bronze and the window frames are bronze as well. I’m thinking that the black walnut is probably the closest to the bronze color on rough cut trim. What would you suggest as the main siding color to complement the bronze?
Can I stain the rough-cut siding right away or should I let it weather until spring? There is also a wrap-around deck that I will allow to weather. I would think that I would use the trim color on the railings and the siding color on the decking. Do you agree?
Terry, We highly suggest getting some samples to test colors out first to make sure you like the color before you buy:

If rough sawn cut you can stain now. See this for more info:

I just installed a yellow pine pressure-treated fence @the end of Sept. I would like to preserve the present color as much as possible. Would the honey tone 1500 series give me the best results? How ong should I wait to apply the stain? I live in Central Florida Gulf coast area. The fence is south facing and it’s now the dry season.
C.M.
Please see this about new wood: http://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Yes you can use the TWP 1500 in Honeytone.
Hi! I’m looking for a cedar tone that isn’t so honey/yellow and I’m debating between 1501 Cedartone and 1520 Pecan. By the description, sounds like Cedartone is darker than Pecan? Just wanted to double check because Pecan sounded darker than Cedartone in the 100 series. Between 1501 and 1520, which is more brown/less yellow. Thanks in advance!
The 1501 is slightly darker than the 1520.
All wood turns out differently based on the age, type, prep, etc. We sell small sample bottles for testing the colors on your wood. This is the best way to determine which color is best for you. Looking at a picture on a computer will not give you the same final color when applied to your deck.
Among TWP semi transparent 1500 series which color is more on darker side (so that I lasts diferent kinds of wear longer) and also bright with some shine? Is it TWP 1502 Redwood (seems like from pics in this url) or TWP 1503 Dark Oak (it appears dark but doesn’t seem like bright/shining or TWP 1516 Rustic or anything else?
There is no shine with TWP stains. They are all penetrating stains that do not create a film/shine. Having a shine is a bad idea for exterior wood as it will peel and blister. The Dark Oak is the darkest of the 3 you mentioned.
Thank you soo much for the reply, i appreciate it, once again i love your website and detailed knowledge it gives
Welcome!
is it like with all semi transparent stains(any company/brand) there will not be shine or is it only with TWP semi transparent stain that there will not be a shine
All deck stain brands for the most part. Shine on a deck = product failure.
by any chance can i see some pics of dark oak and redwood stained decks or any other color with twp semi transparent stain so get an idea of final look, if so where can i see.
No. Only 1 coat on new wood and second coats need to be applied wet on wet. Wait until spring and lightly wash before applying another coat.
I’m building a pressure treated deck and railing. I plan to use TWP 1530 on the deck, but I would like to give the railing a blue/gray tone. Can I use the 1530 in combination with another blue/gray stain, or add pigment to the 1530?
Hello, you cannot add tint to the TWP and the TWP does not come in a blue/gray color. It might be best to use a solid stain over a different brand for the railings and the TWP for the horizontal areas.
I have a new cedar fence about 3 months old. Can I install twp1500 stain anytime or do I need to wait a while for the wood to dry out?
Go ahead and prep with the Gemini Restore Kit and apply the TWP 1500. Fences are typically rough sawn cut so do not need to weather for as much.
Besides clear what color will show grain the most?
All the colors show the grain and do not mask. Colors will enhance the grain based on the color you choose.
I’m looking for more of a brown tint than a red/orange tine but TWP 1503 Dark Oak appears too dark, what are my options? Can 1503 be lightened by mixing with 1530 Natural? If so, at what rate?
You can lighten the 1503 with the Clear. As to how much, that is your preference based on the colors you are trying to achieve.
Can the different 1500 stain colors be mixed to achieve a custom look?
Yes that can be done.
when properly stained how often is it needed treapply(stain)/
Every 2-3 years is normal.
Hi, can i stain my cedar fence in full sun with twp 1520 pecan?
Two light coats applied wet on wet ?
It can be done, but you have to move fast as stain dries much quicker in the heat and full sun.
I’ve got a new cedar fence (6-8 weeks) that I’d like to stain with 1500. Wanting longevity & protection from graying, but retain as much natural wood color as possible. Is the Natural(1530) the closest thing & is it the same as the others in terms of durability?
The Natural is a tinted color. It is the second lightest color. Honeytone is the lightest. The lighter the tint, the faster it will fade. On a vertical though, it always lasts twice. About 3-4 years.
Thank you! I think I’ll go with the natural then.
Is there any place that customers have uploaded picture of their projects? I know the final result always depends on many factors(wood type, age of wood, wear etc.), but it seems like that would be a helpful tool for customers making color choices.
The Q&A area allows for pictures to be added, but we do not have a specific page just for photos.
It certainly would be a nice feature to have on your site- with just a few pieces of info (US location, product used, type of wood, age of wood, coats and stain choice). I’m sure all of the proud customers would love to show off their final products, just a thought!

Pecan or Cedartone.
Thank you! This Old House recommends adding half a pint of varnish to each gallon of the oil-based stain to be used on the deck. Do you agree?
No that is a bad idea.

Steve, best to order samples from our site to test the colors to see what you would like. Se this about new wood as well:
http://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Prep well and apply 2 coats of the TWP now. Every 2 years or so you can clean and reapply the same.
Two light coats applied wet on wet would be best. TWP is a penetrating stain. It is not a shiny varnish type stain.
I’m using Redwood for table tops but want to steer the color to be less red– something closer to “cedar tone”. What do you suggest for countering the red tones? Thank you!
It is not really possible to do this as the dominate color will be the red tones of your wood. You chance the grain of your wood, not lighten it. Maybe the Pecan?
Is TWP 1501 or 1520 closer to TWP 120 pecan? Looking for the light brown color of 120, not the orange of 101.
TWP 1520 is closer to TWP 120.
