Need Help Choosing TWP 1500 Colors?

TWP 1500 Series is available in 9 semi-transparent color choices that penetrate into the wood while enhancing the natural wood grain. The 1500 Series is higher in solids content which may result in “richer” colors than the 100 Series. In general, the 1500 Series color will not match the colors in the 100.

See here: TWP 1500 Series Photo Albums

Take into consideration that colors are not exact and will vary due to:

  • Wood Species
  • Age of Wood
  • How the wood is prepped

Please read this article that explains the TWP 1500 Colors in more detail. If you have any questions, please ask below.

TWP is a penetrating stain. It does not film on the surface and create a gloss or shine on any level.

OK I’m getting ready to order so I can start pressure washing so do I need to put restore stain stripper on with a pump sprayer let it sit for a little while 20 minutes and then pressure wash it off ? You said you try the honey tone color if that is too light in color and I have to redo this deck in 2 years ? I don’t want to do that I want to get at least 3 to 4 years before I recoat . Is there some links Joe homeowners have done their decks or furniture or whatever in this color and it’s holding up Dennis

You will need to remove the old coating first by stripping and possibly sanding. Use the RAD stripper, wait 10-20 and pressure wash off. Rinse all wood well and apply the RAD brightener. For a richer color, try the Pecan.

I am wanting to use western red cedar logs on a remodel project but am not particularly fond of the natural red color when clear coated. Would your product be effective in changing it to more of a natural or brown tone? If so which color would work best?

Mark

I live in Novato, CA and I am in the process having a new redwood deck, fences, and entry stairs installed. We want to protect our wood, but also want to preserve the natural beauty of the redwood. My research has shown that your products are considered one of the best available. We plan on going with the consensus that we should wait six months after installation before staining. My concern is color. Given that this is new wood and since you do not have a clear stain in the 1500 do you think should we go with California Redwood or would we be better off with Honeytone, or would TWP 200 clear be a better choice?

TWPStainHelp

Reply to  Mark

We do have a clear in the 1500 but clear will not protect against UV graying. The Honeytone is the lightest tint with UV protection. I would try a couple of samples from our site to test.

Please read this about new wood: http://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/

All TWP colors will enhance the natural grain. You cannot have a clear without tint and still have UV protection. Honeytone is the lightest tint.

I have an older 800 sq foot deck about 17 years old. It has been maintained but this is the 2nd year from the last application and the stain is wearing through in some areas. I am going to strip it and use two 1500 on it. There is also some wood rot that needs to be repaired and boards replaced. Should I repair the boards before I restain it this year or should I go ahead and stain it this year and repair the boards next year? Do I have time to still stain it this year if the evenings are dipping below 45 degrees? or should I just clean and disinfect the deck (not strip it) and start first thing in the spring? Thanks for your advice. BTW…my previous stain was Rymar penetrating semi-transparent on a red cedar boards. that was 12 years. The last 5 years have been with Sherwin Williams Deckscapes which never really seemed to soak in like the Rymar product but that could have been because I didn’t completely strip the deck.

I would replace the rotting wood not then do all the prep and stain next Spring. The new wood needs to season. You will need to remove all of the old coatings before using the TWP.

Hi, I have a new cedar fence that was installed 5 months ago. I am getting ready to stain it with TWP 1500; I am tossed between three colors: cedartone, honeytone, natural. I like the natural cedar color of my fence and wondering which would be the best, that gives the same protection against uv, while showing the natural wood tones. Thanks

They all show the wood grain but all enhance with different amount of colors and tints. As the article explains, some have more or less color then others.

I have an 8 year old deck made of pressure treated wood. I’ve replaced several bad floor boards an put new wood on top of rage rail. I plan to let it age over the winter here in VA and then use Restore a Deck on it in the spring before staining. With the combination of old and new wood what is the best way to stain with TWP 1500 and get an even looking coat?

TWPStainHelp
Reply to  John Deaton

John, new boards are going to be lighter in color then older boards the first time staining. There is not a way or technique that will get the boards to match. Reason is the new boards are less absorbent. The next time you stain in a couple of years after, they will blend.

We live in north Georgia. July 17, 2015 we installed a pressure treated deck. Cleaned it using oxalic acid (2 coats since I could not scrub some areas with brush) to remove mill glaze and rinsed using pressure washer. We have had many days with temperatures in the high 90’s and low 100’s. I purchased TWP 1500 series, Pecan 1520 to use on deck, is this correct for our area? and would it be safe to stain at 3 months vs. 4 months with the high temps we have experienced over the summer? Thank you for your response!!

TWPStainHelp

4 months is the minimum that we suggest. If you do it now then make sure it absorbs 100% and only one coat. Back wipe any stain that does not penetrate after 45 minutes. Saturate any oily rags in water and lay flat to dry in the sun.

I have previously used TWP 1500 Rustic Brown – upon weathering, it has more red than I’d like. Is it possible to apply another TWP 1500 shade with more brown and less red without removing the old stain?

As long as you prep with the Gemini Restore Kit and go darker in color, then yes you can do this.

Martin Skyrman

TWPStainHelp

Yes but just one coat.

TWPStainHelp

You cannot apply TWP over a solid stain and TWP does not come in a solid stain.

TWPStainHelp

You will need 7-9 gallons for 2 coats. Make sure that the second coat soaks into the wood. If it does not then wipe off excess stain within 30-45 minutes with rags. Saturate any oily rags with water and lay flat to dry. See here about wet on wet application method: http://www.twpstainhelp.com/twp-stain-wet-on-wet-application/

Just used 1501 cedartone on a side of my western red cedar fence and it came out looking very burnt orange. I’d like to go back over with a darker brown to tone down the orange as much as I can – would walnut or dark oak work or will I end up with a darker orange?

TWPStainHelp

The Dark Oak will darken it to brown but the issue is that it may not take very well. I would do a test spot to make sure it can absorb and dry properly. We do have samples on the site for your to order and test.

TWPStainHelp

Adding more stain is not better. Leave as is.

TWPStainHelp

You should try not to get the TWP on the metal spindles or siding. It can be hard to clean off if you do not get to them right away before the stain starts to dry. Easier for the spindles to clean, much harder for the siding. Any color will work but darker colors will hold color longer.

TWPStainHelp

You will not get a green color but had to say what it will be exactly as it depends on how much of the Black Walnut you mixed into the Honeytone.

I have a large triple deck that is entirely redwood. It is several years old and is requiring sanding of every board to make the boards smooth again. I do not like red or yellow color on decks, but prefer a true BROWN color, without going to a solid color stain that hides the grain. If I use 1504 Black Walnut, will it mask the red color in the wood?

TWPStainHelp
Reply to  Mike Carter

No the TWP does not mask the grain but does change the apperance depending on the tint you choose. I woudl suggest getting a sample of the Dark Oak and Black Walnut to test. You should prep after the sanding with the Gemini Restore Kit before staining.

I have a cedar deck that was improperly restrained after I bought. The first stain was a CWF Cedar Tone, probably semi-transparent. Had someone different come in 2 years later and spray what I believe was a solid. It is now peeling up on the floor. I plan to power wash, strip and use TWP #1503 for around 915 sq ft. What product should I use before applying the stain?

TWPStainHelp

Strippers and pressure washing will not remove a solid stain completely. You can strip off as much as possible with the Restore a deck Stripper but you will have to sand the majority off.

No you cannot stain over it. You would have to strip it off with the Restore A Deck Stripper and pressure washing. Brighten as well when the stain is removed. The Rustic color is a red color with a hint of brown.

As long as they are both the same series then you are okay. Mix all cans together though before starting to ensure an even color as a can that sits for 2 years can slightly change based on rooms temps, etc.

Hi. We have a 1400 ft deck that partially surrounds an 18×33 ft above ground pool. It is in full sun in Northeast Pa with lots of lush green lawn and mature trees around the property. We believe we have narrowed our TWP 1500 stain choices to Dark Oak and Black Walnut, since we are not fans of the many “red”
deck stains. Any feedback would be useful since this would be somewhat costly. Pictures of these color choices on large decks would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for any help or pictures you are willing to share!

We have just stripped and sanded 3 layers of crappy solid stain off of our 20+ year old deck. We are leaving the railings the solid color. There is still a bit of solid stain on some of the sides of the floorboards. We were planning on using the dark oak 1500 hoping that the red solid on the sides will blend in/not be very noticeable. Thoughts on this? Also, do we have to clean at this point, or is just doing the brightening step sufficient? Thanks!

*added a pic ^^ of the sanded deck.

Clean and brighten to open the pores. The solid stain will not blend with the Dark Oak. It will show through some.

We just had our new pressure treated pine fence stained with TWP 1503 (Dark Oak). Is it normal to have different color tones on different part of the fence or is that a result of bad application by paint spray gun? The color is great but I felt like it’s darker in some area. It almost have an “uneven” color look on the fence after we finished.

TWPStainHelp

Being that it is a semi-transparent stain it is normal to see different colors throughout the wood. It could be uneven application as well. Can you post a picture please.

Is is a combination of the wood and uneven application. The knots being lighter in color is normal but you can also where some stain was heavily applied in areas, looking much darker and thicker.
