Need Help Choosing TWP 1500 Colors?
TWP 1500 Series is available in 9 semi-transparent color choices that penetrate into the wood while enhancing the natural wood grain. The 1500 Series is higher in solids content which may result in “richer” colors than the 100 Series. In general, the 1500 Series color will not match the colors in the 100.
See here: TWP 1500 Series Photo Albums
Take into consideration that colors are not exact and will vary due to:
- Wood Species
- Age of Wood
- How the wood is prepped
Please read this article that explains the TWP 1500 Colors in more detail. If you have any questions, please ask below.
TWP 1501 Cedartone is the most popular color in the 1500 Series. It is a brownish/cedar color that is darker than the 100 Series Cedartone. TWP 1501 Photos
TWP 1502 Redwood is a very rich red color. TWP 1502 Photos
TWP 1503 Dark Oak highlights your wood with a rich Dark Brown. This color is very popular with consumers who are looking to stray away from the cedar and reddish color choices. TWP 1503 Photos
TWP 1504 Black Walnut is a stunning dark brown color. Very unique but loved by consumers! TWP 1504 Photos
TWP 1511 is a great color. This is a lighter red color that is not as dark or rich as the 1502 Redwood. TWP 1511 Photos
TWP 1515 is the lightest color in this series. This color will highlight the grain of your wood with golden tones. TWP 1515 Photos
TWP 1516 is a very popular red color as the red tones are highlighted with a slightly brown tone. TWP 1516 Photos
TWP 1520 is one of the 2 newest colors for the 1500 Series. This color is a lighter brownish/cedar color of the 1501 Cedartone. TWP 1520 Photos
TWP 1530 was introduced to resemble the 101 Cedartone Natural color. This color is not a “Clear”. This color is a traditional cedar color that highlights your wood grain with Caramel/Golden Tones. TWP 1530 Natural Photos
Feel free to ask any questions in the comment area below.
Just had a deck built with KDAT Pine. From what I’ve read and have been told I can stain this right away Is this true? Also, what color tones do you recommend? I’m leaning towards Cedar or Redwood but am unsure how this will look on KDAT Pine.
Jason MD, for KDAT you should let the wood season outside for a month or two and prep first with the Gemini Restore Kit. Only one coat this time. Any color will work and getting a couple of samples would be a good idea.
It is in pine with two coats. Best to get a sample from the site to test as colors can vary widely due to wood type, age, application, prep, etc.
I live in the Greater Cincinnati area and added a new pressure treated wood deck in Nov/Dec. I want to keep the natural color of the wood, but definitely want to protect it. Would the 1500 series in Natural be best for this? If I wait until about May/June to do the work, do I need to clean/brighten the wood first? We’ve had a lot of snow and I’ve tried to keep that off the deck as much as I could. Thanks!
Beverly, the natural is not clear and you must have a tint if you want to prevent UV graying. Please read this about the colors: http://www.twpstainhelp.com/twp-1500-colors-explained/
for info on new wood, please read this: http://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Just re-shingled exteior walls of old house. We live in mild climate of Berkeley, CA so have to use 1500 series low VOC semi-transparent stain. Any special prep we should be aware on shingles that have never been stained before? I assume Gemini Resore kit is not necessary for new shingles, correct? How about seasoning – one of the answers below suggested someone wait 4 months before applying stain. Would that be applicable to us too? How does waiting change what steps we do and the outcome?
Also, how often should we plan to restain in the future so the shingles always stay in good condition? Thanks.
Berkeley, if the shingles are smooth you need to wait and prep with the Gemini Restore Kit. If “rough” you can stain right away. Please read this: http://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Fence Pickets
Rough RW Cedar
Newly purchased
Unfinished (unstained )
I’m building a fence 4′ by 16′ in length, running horizontal cedar pickets.
My question:
I’ve been sanding the rough sawn finish off each board, opting for a smoother, clearer grain.
Will this have an effect on the dry out time, the oxidation, or graying?
I expect any mill glaze is sanded off, so the absorption should improve, yes ?
My other question, Is it more beneficial to allow space between fence boards, or butted up tight, edge to edge?

budbahass, sanding reduces absorption greatly. Weather for a few months and prep with the Gemini Restore Kit.
If we find the Honeytone 1515 too light can we put on the Natural 1530 on top in a year or two? Will that look OK or just look bad?
(We got samples of the Natural and Cedartone and found Cedartone too dark all over while the Natural looks nice in the lighter areas but a little darker than taste around knots)
Kareem, you can always go a shade darker with a future application. Just make sure to use the Gemini Restore Kit for the prep.
Glad we went with the Honeytone as it came darker than what we expected and the TWP _really_ makes the grain and knots “pop”.
Great!
Would this be a cardinal sin? 🙂 I have a new cedar deck and am considering the idea of mixing the Redwood 1511 and the Dark Oak 1503. Bad idea? Has anyone done something similar?
Tom, yes you can mix colors together. Iw ould suggest getting some samples to test this. New wood should season for 4+ months and cleaned and brightened first for the prep.
Should I use an oil or water based stain brush?
Matt, oil based would be better.
I’m having a western red cedar fence installed this week. Is it ok to have it stained a few days after installation? I’d also like to keep the fence as natural looking as possible (enhancing the natural wood variation). Would the natural cedar tone be the best choice? Thanks!
Kristi, if the fence is rough sawn wood you can stain now. If smooth you need to wait a few months. The Honeytone is the lightest tint.
Matt, yes on the 1516 Rustic.
What if it rains on the new stain a day after applying. Do you have to restain?
Aaron, no it will not hurt it a day after.
I am unhappy with the color of my new, recently stained KDAT, pressure treated decking. I used the 1530 Natural. The color when dried is a flat, orange-red. What can I do? Is my only option to sand it down and start over?
Georgia Girl, yes that would be the way to go if you want to change. Might want to wait a week or two as the color will “tone” down a little.
How do the twp 1500 colors work with new Doug fir? Anyone with experience and pics?
M, all wood species have different colors. Best to get some samples from the site to test.
Hello, our deck is 11 years old and appears to have never been stained/painted. I just pressure washed off the gray dirt and mildew and a much better looking light brown is showing through, though the wood is very dry. I would like to use TWP 1500 but am trying to decide on color. The original wood appears to be pressure treated pine, and the new railings we are putting in are that. Do you have color recommendations? I really don’t want anything with an orange appearance. Thank you!
Valerie, try 1520 Pecan or the 1515 Honeytone. If unsure it is best to get samples.
Kim, correct on the application. Not sure what will match. Best to get a sample.
EMA, sorry but currently there are not any plans for that.
I live in Minnesota and have a 16 year old cedar deck that previously had a solid stain on it. We just got done sanding it, what is my next step? Do I need to use a cleaner before the brightener?
Also, should I go with the 100 Series or the 1500 Series? Any reasoning behind going with either one?
MN Deck, after the sanding use the Gemini Restore Kit for the prep. 100 Series for this as it will penetrate sanded wood better than the 1500.
I had placed an order for the bottles of 1500 samples 4weeks ago. I still haven’t received. Anyone can help looking into please.
Lincoln, do you have an order number? Name?
Caroline, colors vary widely based on the type of wood and the age of the wood. That is why we offer small sample bottles for customers to test on their deck.
I do plan on getting samples, I am just saying it is hard to even pick based on the small images you provide. Why not have a section of customer photos showing off your product telling what type of color and what wood used in each. A picture is worth a thousand words.
Caroline, the colors would still look different when applied to your deck.
Just talked to pre owner, the deck is not a solid stain, it is Behr semi trans parent a cedar color, what prep do i need to do to switch to twp? Worn on horizontal boards decking, not side rails, it was stained 3 years ago,

Just bought a lake house in mo. The deck boards are just starting to show wear, its a solid stain, the color is ok, but wouldnt mind changing, what do i need to do to prep the deck to use your product?
Laura, TWP cannot be applied on top of a solid stain. You would need to sand that off and that will be very difficult.
Don, measure the s. footage of the floor. Measure the linear footage of the rails x 3. Add same for steps. Add altogether.
I have a cedar deck that is ready for stain…is 100 or 1500 better for the Minnesota weather? What would look good with white rails and tan house… I don’t like orange tints and it is hard to tll the colors online…
MNMan, I would use the 100 Series. Maybe Pecan or Dark Oak.
We have just finished stripping the old stain off our cedar deck (I believe we had Sikkens on it) and have decided to go with the TWP 1500 in I think Honeytone. We’re currently not planning on using brightener. The old stain is 98% gone thanks to the stripper and lots of scrubbing with a hard bristle brush which left the wood a little furry. We’ll be using new incense cedar for the new guardrail around the deck finished with Sherwin Williams Woodscapes (because we bought it before reading the reviews but it sounds like it performs ok on vertical surfaces.). Does the p,an for the deck sound like it will work? We LOVE the natural tones of the cedar when it’s wet, will honey tone emulate that? We don’t want orange!
WaHO, you need to brighten the deck still. Lightens the wood and neutralizes the caustic of the stripper while restoting the natural pH balance. The Honeytone is the lightest tint and the closest to to a wet look.
If we buy the 5 gallon and only use 2 gallons, will the left over be good in 2 years when we go to add another coat?
WaHO, no it most likely will go bad if opened.
Ok, last question. Since we only have about 300 sf of deck, we don’t want to buy the 5 gallon if we can’t store it but the shipping cost makes this stain out of our budget if we only buy 2 gallons. I’ve been trying to find a dealer in Washington (Seattle/Tacoma/Olympia area) and can’t seem to. Can you tell me if you have a dealer in this area? We’d really like to use this product but will have to find something else if we can’t pick it up around here. Suggestions?
WaHO, we are an online dealer for TWP and we personally do not have a dealer there.
I have just installed a redwood fence and would basically like a sealer, what do you recommend? Would like it to look natural as possible. Do you have any suggestions?
Anthony, if it is not tinted then you will not have UV protection from graying. The TWP does come in a clear but will gray naturally. The Honeytone is the lightest color.
I have an older deck. Cleaned and brightened with the Restore-a-Deck product. But, it’s been raining a lot since I did this about 3 weeks ago so have not been able to apply the TPW stain. Do I need to do anything to prepare for staining when I am finally able to stain when the rain stops for a good period of time?
Sandy, clean off any dirt and bird droppings before staining.
Drake, try the TWP 1515 Honeytone color or 1530 Natural. The Honeytone is lighter.
Eve, any color(s) will work.
J, probably the 1511 California Redwood or the 1515 Honeytone.
Joel, not sure what will work for this. Maybe a deck stain stripper and a light pressure washing?
Thanks for quick reply. The guys want to apply the stain next week so I probably don’t have time to order the samples. Is the TWP 1515 lighter than the TWP 1530? I don’t want orange tones. It looks like the Honeytone might have some orange undertones. Is this correct?
Thanks!
The 1515 is more golden while the 1530 is more orange.
Gavin, if the wood is just weathered then use the Gemini Restore Kit for the prep with a light pressure washing. Stain with the TWP 1500 Series.
Beverly, it will not matter to the wood type not can you match or even out new and old wood.
Cathy, it is not possible to get new and old wood to match.
I would like to use the 1516 rustic on our deck railings…I would like a lighter contrast color for the floor of the deck. Which color would you recommend?
Lisa, I would try the 1515 Honeytone.
I have to replace 4 planks in my deck which is pressure treated wood. Which color in the 1500 series would be best to get an even color? The deck covers 1/3 of my brick house and 1/2 of a white sunroom
Beverly, you cannot match new wood and old wood. The new wood will be lighter in color as it is less absorbent. None of the TWP colors will blend this.
Cathy, the Pecan would be the best for you based on your question. The 1501 is more brown.
i want a stain that will show wood color. i have cedar deck and i dont want it orange what color would u suggest
Laura, all of the TWP colors will show the wood grain. Please read these articles on the colors: http://www.twpstainhelp.com/tips/need-help/twp-color-tips/
OH Deck, probably Honeytone.
Rich, what state do you live in?
Is this product hard to apply? Cabots Honey Teak Bubbled up on me…
Tyler, it is fairly easy to apply. Best to use a stain pad for application.
I have to also say that in ordering samples from Cabot last year they totally did NOT look like their swatch cards. At least this company is willing to send you samples and reimburse you when you order their product which sounds like the right way to do business to me!
Please let me know how your experiences have been with this product TWP 1500. I used Cabots Honey Teak Timber Oil last Summer and it was a disaster. Have totally re-sanded my deck. Is this product hard to apply? Is it really #1 as I read online? I am looking for a darker brown with orange, red, highlights. A classy but rustic color I may have to mix two colors to achieve this! If anyone can email me picts of their deck with the rustic and/or Redwood Colors or any blends PLEASE do. tydallen @ hot mail
I have a question about applying a “maintenance” coat of TWP 1500. I applied the 1st coat of TWP 1500 less than 1 year ago (redwood deck about 30 years old). Now we want to put down a maintenance coat of TWP 1500 to keep it looking good – even though the deck still looks good & rain still beads up. Question is – do I still have to clean, scrub, power wash & brighten prior to the maintenance coat??? I don’t want to remove any of the good 1st coat that’s already penetrated the wood…..thanks! ~ Heidi in Minnesota
Heidi, best to lightly clean to remove the dirt and grime. Do not heavy scrub. A soft broom should work.
What is the closest color in the 1500 series to the discontinued 515C “Light Cedar” color? We used a mix of 2 parts Redwood (502C) to 1 part Light Cedar (515C) on a large cedar shed and would like to duplicate that color for recoating the shed and staining a new building. Thanks!
The 1515 Honeytone is the closest to the 515 Light Cedar.
How long does the 1500 have to dry before people can walk on it and it can handle rain?
Thanks,
John, it varies but anywhere from 4-24 hours.
I have stripped 80-85 percent of my pressure treated deck and can get no more off. Would a product like 1500 in dark walnut still be an effective option for me?
Jay, depends on what the old stain brand was and the type of stain as well.
I am about to redo my ipe deck. will be cleaning and brightening then using your product. Have used Penofin in the past but is not available now due to voc. I want to acheive the same look. Would the natural be my best choice in terms of color?
Heidi, it is not the same color but similar. The Rustic is a popular color for IPE.
The 1501 will prolong the graying for 2-3 years.
