After powerwashing the deck it looks close to what you show following restore-a-deck I know you say it is eco friendly- but we have a tree and other vegetation I do not want to risk stressing. What happens if I skip this step? Previous is not TWP- deck older (~20yr) but structurally in good shape. Your product sounds good- but prefer to keep chemicals to a minimum. 1500 or 100 work better. Thanks.
Post a picture please.
Thanks!
We have a solid color stain in a red tone on our deck now. We would like to change to a more brown tone. Which product do you have that will work best?
Hello, TWP does not in a solid color so cannot be applied over your current stain.
where are the new york state dealers located
Hi Tony, we are an online dealer for the TWP. We ship there to NY in about 2-3 days.
Could I mix 1502 and 1503 to get a less red color? I would experiment with ratios.
Yes you can mix TWP colors together.
I stain our deck with TWP last year and need to re-stain it. Which TWP product do I need to order?
Hi Cooper, you would prep with the Gemini Restore Kit and stain with the same color and series you used last time.Your last order was in 2016 and that was for 3 Kits of the TWP 101 Cedartone and the Gemini. You can find them here:
https://www.twpstain.com/twp100-5gallon-gemini-kit-detail
Recommendations for stain for a new cedar fence installed Aug 2017. TWP 100 or 1500? I live in Nevada.
Hi Greg, use the TWP 1500.
I stained my deck last fall with TWP 100 Rustic Brown. I’ve noticed a little fading in areas that get a lot of sun and would like to reapply. From other posts, it looks like a you would recommend the Restore-A-Deck first. Is it ok to use Restore-A-Deck one weekend and stain the next weekend or is that too much time in between the two stages? Assuming no rain between the weekends.
Yes, you can do that. Since you are doing a maintenance coat, use the RAD at 2-4 oz of powder instead of the 8 oz. You want to do a mild cleaning to remove any dirt, etc.
I am interested in staining my cedar clapboard home. It was built in 1996 and has been stained clear at different times over the years. Your stain comes highly recommended. Do you have an almost clear stain that might simply enhance the color as maybe an oil would do for leather or even wood I suppose. I am not interested in coloring my siding cedar but I thought something that would make the wood a bit richer in color. Thank you. Also, what series would you recommend. I understand you may be able to send samples? Thank you, Laura
Honeytone is the lightest tint but it will stain/enhance the grain of the wood. Samples are on this link: https://www.twpstain.com/stain-samples
Use the 1500 Series.
Thank you very much!
Recently opened and have been using TWP Natural stain and since bottom of can was somewhat bent I have a concern about keeping the unused stain in the can. I have a 2.5 gallon Olympic cleaner plastic jug (similar thickness as a gas can) and wanted to check if its OK to store unused stain in this plastic container.
Yes it can be stored in a plastic container.
This is for your webmaster – I hit a bug:
1. Filled out order form, including the state, but entered wrong expiry date.
2. Submitted – but was rejected. (Correct)
3. So I corrected expiry date.
4. But then also noticed the returned form no longer had a selected state!
5. So I re-selected the state.
6. Submitted again – but was rejected again!
7. Then noticed that when I had selected state that the expiry date was then changed to previous incorrect value! (Wrong)
8. So I re-selected the state FIRST, then corrected the expiry date.
9. Submitted again – accepted!
So there’s a problem of having the expiry date being altered when you select the state.
Thanks.
Hello, and thanks for letting us know. I believe the issue is more browser related then a site issue as we cannot duplicate.
FYI: I’m using IE Edge on Windows 10. Thanks.
I bought a 5 gallon container of TWP 100 on Sept. 2016. I only used one gallon at that time.
I recently opened it up for a new project and the contents have thickened.
How to I thin the remaining 4 gallons so that I may use them?
Hello, unfortunately, it has gone bad and cannot be fixed.
Is this normal? I don’t remember reading anywhere this anywhere when I purchased this item and don’t see this anywhere on the side of the can. I am greatly disappointed in this product as I never had this issue when using Olympic Stain.
I feel TWP has to make this issue right!
Yes that is normal for an opened container to go bad within 12 months: https://twpstainhelp.com/shelf-life-of-twp/
How long should I wait to move furniture back after staining?? we have had 3 sunny low humidity days since we stained??
You should be good after 3 days. Just make sure the stain is not tacky and fully cured.
And one more: Next spring: can I just lightly pressure wash with the mildew cleaner and then put on another thin coat of the TWP 100?
When recoating, use the Gemini Restore Kit. Apply the Cleaner and lightly pressure wash off.
I have an older approximate 600-650 sf deck. It’s been prepped ( stripped off old stain, pressure washed and sanded. ). We did change out about 6-7 new boards. And sanded those.
I live in the pacific NW..
Which of your stains (100 or 1500), would you recommend?
How much would I need for the two coats.
Last I’m not seeing how to order. Can you help?
Use the TWP 1500 Series. About 6-7 gallons for 2 coats. You can buy direct on this link:
https://www.twpstain.com/twp-1500-series
after applying a 2nd coat there is patchy oily film in spots. have you any suggestions how to remove the excess?
See this for tips: https://twpstainhelp.com/twp-stain-is-spotty-or-shiny/
I’m hoping to remove old TWP stain from a small redwood deck by sanding, and then applying TWP 1500 stain. I see lots of posts about stripping and restoring, but can’t find much about sanding to remove old stain.
Three questions: Do I need to pressure wash before sanding? Do I need to sand with more than one grit? Do I need to do anything between sanding and staining such as using a cleaner and brighter after sanding?
Hello,
If you sand it is best to start with 60 grit and finish with 80 grit. After sanding you will need to use the Gemini Restore (cleaner and a wood brightener) Kit for the final prep. This helps to allow the TWP stain to soak in better.
I live in the Texas hill country North of San Antonio about 50 miles, and out “in the country” My zip code is 78133. I am 15 miles South of Canyon Lake.
We have 8-10 inch Ashe Juniper (locally mistakenly called “cedar”) poles holding ore balcony and roof porch up. They have been hand stripped of the bark over a long period of time. They are currently a bit grey in color. They are expose3d to a lot of sunlight. The original color was primarily brown with a bit of red in it. The wood is hard and smooth. I want a semitransparent stain (I will choose a color later) for these poles.
What is your recommendation for product and its application, and surface prep. I am pretty sure that 1 gallon would be enough, but could re-order if need be. I am not adverse to ordering 5 gallons. Please quote me shipping and product cost
THANK YOU,
A W Ellington. my email address is not to be seen outside of TWP. No advertisements or promotions please
Use the TWP 100 series for the stain. You can order direct from this link:
https://www.twpstain.com/twp-100-series
For the prep, use the Gemini Restore Kit:
https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
All pricing is on those links.
What is the warranty on the 1500 and 100 series?
Please see the product data sheets. Thanks
is this product animal safe, like if dogs or cats chew on the wood
Yes it should have no issues once fully cured.
I was wondering if I can put the clear 1500 over wood that has a 1500 cedar tone stain on it?
No and it woiud have no benefit as the clear does not help with UV protection.
What twp series is best for mahogany deck?
Most use the TWP 100 Series in the Rustic Color.
i am putting aluminum railing on a new deck made of pressure treated pine. According to your article, it is better to wait for the wood to settle so the stain can penetrate more. Do I have to wait to stain the deck before installing the railings? Does it matter? Can pressure treated pine take Cape Cod gray stain nicely? I would appreciate your answer.
You can do the railings now and do the prep and stain in 4+ months. Just one light coat of the Cape Cod gray for the first time staining.
Its been a year since I applied TWP stain. Looks great! Spring is upon us and the deck has a little grime and dirt. What is recommended as far as cleaning detergent and method of cleaning? Light power washing or hose rinse?
Hi Brandon,

I’m building a pergola using new rough sawn cedar. The carpenter told me to stain all the pieces, then he will cut and assemble. all I’ll have to do is touch up cut ends. Makes sense. I’m planning on using TWP100 Pecan. Will this procedure work or not ? Thankyou for your input.
If the wood is rough sawn then yes you can prestain. Smooth wood and decking cannot be stained right away: https://twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
i live on vancouver island, wet climate 6 months a year .i have removed 650 square feet of 2×6 cedar it has been replaned and sanded and dried.what twp stain would be best ?i have a u.s.a.mail shipping drop .
See this article as you will need to read this as new wood: https://twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Look at the 100 Series for this after the wait and prep.
I applied TWP 100 to my deck in here in southeastern Virginia. It has an unshaded southern exposure and is subject to some very high temperatures in the summer. In addition, some of the pt five quarter decking is slightly cupped so that water puddles rather than running off. Is it likely that the heat, sunlight and puddling will promote mildew and/or mold? And if so, what should I do about it. Thanks very much
Hard to say if your environment will or will not promote mold or mildew. TWP contains an EPA registered preservative to help prevent this from growing in the stain but a stain cannot prevent the potential of growth on top of the stain.
Thank you for your reply to my mold/mildew question. As a follow up, would washing the deck periodically with some type of mild generic cleaner or mold/mildew preventative help decrease the likelihood of it growing on top of the stain without effecting the TWP100?
You can try that but it may or may not help. You have to be very careful you do not use to aggressive a cleaner that it starts to break down the stain.
Can you provide me with directions for applying maintenance coat on twp100 applied to pt2x6s a year ago?
Hello Tom, see this article please: https://twpstainhelp.com/applying-a-maintenance-coat-of-twp/
I wrote to Sashco as they have VERY good caulking products, but they replied with the following:
Good afternoon, Mr. Squire. Thank you for reaching out to Sashco.
TWP 1500 series stain is a deep-penetrating oil-based stain that contains waxes that will interfere with the adhesion of any sealant applied to the surface. Unfortunately, none of our products (nor any available at a normal hardware store) will stick to a surface that has that stain on there. That said, you could attempt to remove the stain just along the bond line where the sealant will be applied via a combination of mineral spirits and sanding. Yes, it will be some work to do that, but it will be the most successful course of action.
There are other sealants out there available to commercial contractors that may work in your situation. You might contact TWP to see what they recommend.
I hope that helps. It’s probably not the answer you were looking for, but we’d hate for you to use our product and it not work for you.
Please let us know if you have any other questions. We’re happy to be a resource.
Have a wonderful new year!
Hi Ernie,
A few things of note.
-There is no wax in TWP.
-We see from your mail that you are in Canada. The TWP 1500 is not VOC compliant for Canada and cannot be used or sold there. You can buy and use the TWP 200 Series from us.
-Best to apply the caulking first to the bare wood and then apply the TWP 200 stain after. No issues this way.
Thanks
Thank you very much for your reply and I do agree it would be best to apply the caulking first. However, after two 2″x12″ lumber have been nailed/screwed together and caulked it would be very difficult to apply the stain to the inside of the 2″x12″ lumber. Our question really is: can TWP recommend a caulking that will work with the TWP 1500 stain that we do have?
Thanks again for taking the time to answer our question.
Ernie
Most use the DAP brand as long as it rated for oil-based stains or paints.
We have a newly installed (July) cedar picket and pine post fence. We cleaned it over a month ago and it’s been raining and snowing so I’m wondering if we missed our window to stain until the Spring. the forecast says the temps will be high of 55, low of 36 over the next 10 days with slight chance of rain and partially cloudy. Can we still stain if the high is say 50, but at night it dips to the 30’s? Also, we’ve already purchased the 101 stain. Will it keep for months until it gets warm again? UGH!!!
You can stain during the day when in the 50s but it should not drop below freezing at night. Upper 30s should be okay. It will take longer to fully cure, so a few of days with these temps and no rain.
I’m having a deck stain dilemma. New PT pine deck boards installed April ’16. Let them weather until Oct. ’16 and applied single coat of 1500 series cedar stain after applying restore-a-deck kit and letting it dry a few days. In May ’17 I applied second coat of stain. In September ’17 the deck became coated with huge splotches of black mold over entire surface except for under a dining table. What are my options at this point. Note: I still have enough stain left in the well-sealed 5 gal. bucket to apply another coat. However wife not too happy with the product at this point and might do something she’d regret (or not)if I re-apply the 1500 and get a repeat of the mold issue. Happy to send some picture along if that would be of any help. One last thing, the original deck boards were stained with Behr solid deck stain and never developed mold. The deck is in central Massachusetts and is on the south-east side of house exposed to a fair amount of sun during the day.
Thanks so much for any guidance you can provide.
Dave S.
Hi Dave, TWP contains an EPA registered mildewcide that stops it from growing in the stain. If you have mold on top of the stain, there is no way to prevent it and it is not related to the TWP itself. I am guessing that the mold came from pollen based on the time of the year that the stain was applied. Pollen is a known mildew/mold feeder and it is very possible that a tree was pollinating nearby while the TWP was curing and the “yellow” pollen dust stuck to the surface. This would create the issue that you are having.
Thank you for that response. Does this mean the mold would only be on top of the stain and not in the stain? That seems like I would then have a chance of removing the mold without damaging the stain below. What would you suggest I use to do this? I don’t want to use anything too harsh that would compromise the stain but the mold has got to go as it totally ruins the appearance of the deck.
It is probably on top of the stain. Unfortunately, there is not a product that will just remove mold and not have any effect on the stain below.
So how would you recommend that I approach this? Of course at this late point in the year, it will need to wait until spring but am I up against stripping and sanding? The deck is 12×24 plus (5) 6′ long stairs. It would be a significant amount of work if that should be necessary. Would the restore kit and another coat of stain be sufficient?
The TWP is easilyy prepped with the Restore A Deck Stripper/Brightener Kit. Do in Spring and be careful of the pollen from trees.
What is the anticipated life expectancy of the TWC 100 clear on new cedar decking in Cincinnati, Ohio?
The TWP 100 Series is not VOC compliant for Ohio. You will need the TWP 1500 Series. the Clear does not have any tint and will not provide UP protection from graying. You will need one of the tinted colors for UV protection. See this article about new wood: https://twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Hello I have attached photos of our 1.5 yo multi-level deck complete with railings and steps. Roughly +/- 2500 sf. It is pressure treated pine and has a transparent redwood stain. It is all in good shape at the moment. My concern is getting behind the maintenance curve. Seeking advice on cleaning products and then preservatives (TWP 100 or the water-based stain?). Thank you in advance for your assistance!
If the current brand of stain that is on the deck is not TWP, you will need to strip and sand to remove this coating. Brighten the wood after when done. Use the TWP 100 or 1500 Series once prepped.
What are the temperature tolerances for application TWP 100?
45-90 degrees.
5 gallon can received. How do I open it?
The tabs pry up and then lid lifts off.
We are looking at applying some cedar shakes to the gable ends of our house for accents. We are currently searching for a good source of shingles. Once I do find some, is there anyway I can puchase some samples of your stain so I can see what it would look like on the cedar? Is it best to stain the shakes before installing? We also built a 22 x 28 covered deck out of treated pine this summer and we are looking at using TWP in it as well.
Samples are on this link: https://www.twpstain.com/stain-samples
No, you cannot pre stain with TWP. See this about new wood: https://twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Thank you for the link to the samples! I will be looking tonight. I understand that the treated pine would need to weather, but even the cedar shakes too? Also which product is best to use on both of these projects? Can I use the same one or will I need to apply to separate products?
Same for both. Use the 1500 Series. Best to wait and prep if the shingles are smooth cut.
One more question for now! 🙂 I have finally located some red cedar shakes from a company in North Carolina. They are a #1 grade 18 inch shake. They were nice enough to send me a sample. I know that the porch wood needs to “age” at least 4 months before applying TWP (we will honestly probably wait until spring to apply), but with the shakes since they are grooved on one side would they still need to “age”?
Also with the shakes, could we apply the product before installing if we don’t have to let them “age”? I have seen online recommeded that you can pour the product into a large plastic tote and dip the shakes into the product then brush the excess product off, would this be an acceptable way to apply the product to the shakes?
I know the porch will have to be cleaned come spring and then applied with a brush.
Thanks so much for all you’re help with my many questions!
If the shakes are rough cut, you can stain right away as long as they are dry. Dipping should be fine.
I just finished staining my deck with TWP 100 Honeytone 115. It was beautiful. We did all the prep work right. Watched the weather and when we had 3days showing dry weather out of a 10 day forecast for our area, we stained it. That very night our weather forecast changed drastically and within 9 hours of finishing the staining, our deck was rained on and has now been rained on for 2 more days. I am just sick with worry about the deck never drying properly. I don’t know if I should try sweeping the water off or just hope it will finally dry out. What can we expect to have happen if the deck doesn’t actually get a chance to dry. We are almost in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan where we won’t be getting very many nice days anymore. What can we do to help the deck? We only applied the one coat on “kiln dried after treatment” wood. Deck was up in June but we waited to treat and planned to do the second coat of stain in the spring as per your can and site directions. But this sudden change in the weather and the last few days of rain has us worried that even with all our care, it may not finish well. What would you suggest? Please help and thank you. The product is exactly what we wanted, love it.
Pat Neargarth, Florence, WI
There is nothing you can do right now. Just let the rain stop and dry off the deck to assess the situation. Since it was 9 hours, most likely it will be fine. Feel free to take a picture and post it here with any concerns you have after the rain water fully dries off the deck.
due to the wind, i have spots and spills of TWP 1500 series stain on brick walls, brick pavers and concrete all unsealed. it has been 2 weeks. a 3500 PSI pressure washer does not get the stains out. How might i be able to remove these stains of stain from the brick and concrete?
Try a graffiti remover cleaner and pressure washing.
Using samples, I blended 1500 stains Natural and Cedartone 1:1 and like the look. I also blended 1500 stains Pecan and Natural 2:1 and like that look. Applied to rough hewn cedar siding, the blends seem to be absorbed as well as the standard color stains. Can I mix 1500 stains to get a custom color w/out encountering problems?
No issues with mixing the TWP colors.
My painting contractor is planning on using TWP to stain my western red cedar siding in early November. We are located in the California Sierra Nevada Mountains at 5000 feet elevation. I expect that day time highs will be in the low 50s and morning lows to be in the low 20s then. Is it prudent to apply the stain in those conditions?
It should not drop below freezing at night if the stain is still wet. Daytime temps are fine.
What is the shelf life of the 5gallon 1500 stain
See this: https://twpstainhelp.com/shelf-life-of-twp/
The house I just purchased has some stain on the deck bu I don’t know what it is. I have used the TWP at my previous home and love it. What prep do I need to do to use it on this new deck since I don’t know the product that’s on it already.
You have to remove it. How depends on the brand and type. Stripping and or sanding may be needed.
I have an IPE deck that needs to be cleaned and re-oiled. TWP was put on the deck originally about a year ago. They deck is fairly gray with some areas that still have color due to them being covered. Do I need to strip the deck and with what? Should I use the 100 or 150 to oil the deck.
Strip and brighten for the prep. Use the 100 if allowed in your state, otherwise use the 1500.
Would your recommendation still have been to wait til spring if I would not have sanded the deck? Do I have to worry about any damage to the deck while waiting until spring? I was worried with sanding that it may expose more of the wood and remove the pressure treatment. The intent was to stain right away. I don’t have an issue waiting but did not want to cause any damage to the deck. Will the weathering counter-act the sanding and open the pores up again.
It will not damage the wood and is best to wait at this point. It will help the stain to soak in better and evenly.
I stained my deck using dark oak 100 series. Mixed in the morning but not throughout the day. The early on looks reddish and later it got to be very dark. Should I expect that? Was it just not mixed or something else. I didn’t think dark oak had any red in it.
Most likely it was not mixed fully at start and it also settled during the application. The pigment can settle to the bottom and a drill mixer is suggested to mix the pigment into the stain evenly.
What would be the best stain to use on cedar siding that will be a new project. The siding will be horizontal.
Use the TWP 1500.
I have been using TWP for more than 10 years using 101 Cedartone. I restained the deck 2 years ago. I now just cleaned and pressure washed the deck which removed failed stain and lightened the wood. I used the wet on wet method. After it dried for 3 days, it rained. Now there is a white film splotchiness on the stain where the rain puddled then dried. What caused that? Will it dissipate? Does this indicate the new coat has/will fail?
Most likely this is just minerals from the water that dried on top of the stain. Should wipe off with a wet rag.
The instructions aren’t very clear. What does wet on wet mean. I don;t wait for the first coat to fully dry before applying a second coat? Can it be walked on during that process? I live in mid north NJ, we have not had 48 hours of no rain since the summer of 2016. If I wait for a clear forecast, my deck will rot before that happens. It is also very humid here. This site suggested the TWP 1500 and that is what I am planning on using, once we pick a color. Also, what is the maximum time suggested between washing and brightening to staining? I was planning on spraying the stain on and then brushing it in. Thoughts on that?
See this about wet on wet: https://twpstainhelp.com/twp-stain-wet-on-wet-application/
Try to stain within 2-14 days after the prep. You can spray on your first coat and back brush in your second coat.
https://twpstainhelp.com/twp-stain-wet-on-wet-application/
Can I apply another coat of twp 100 every two years
Yes, but prep with the Gemini Restore Kit first.
I have installed a cedar deck this summer and TWP was recommended as a potential product by a friend who has had success with the product. My question is how long should I let my new deck sit before applying TWP 100 in a grey tone. If I wait any longer it will have to wait until spring. Thanks for any info that you can proved.

I recently had installed a prefabricated Gazebo. It is held up by four 6X6 pressure treated posts. I have purchased TWP stain but I would like to know how I can tell when is the right time to stain the posts? I live in South Florida so they get pretty good sun exposure but they also get rained on a lot. I don’t want to jump the gun and stain them before they have had enough time to dry properly.
Thank You

My Cedar extra clear sidewall shingles were installed end of July,2017.
South side strong sun exposure. Can I have a coat of the 1500 TWP deck stain applied
mid to end September this year? All the online info seems to be about decks. Thank You!
Yes, you can do the 1 coat to your shingles this September.
