Last Updated on January 30, 2023 by TWP Help

We are here to help you with your TWP exterior deck or wood restoration project for 2024!

TWP is an advanced wood preservative/protectant registered by the EPA. Performance and longevity can vary though depending on the wood type, how the wood is prepped, the age of wood, and how the TWP is applied. We want everyone who has decided to use TWP 100, 1500, or 200 Series to have the best possible results.

TWP Stain Tips and Help

When asking questions please give us some information about your wood restoration project:

  • What structure is your wood? Examples would be: Deck, Wood Siding, Fence, etc
  • What species is the wood? Examples: Treated Pine, Cedar, Redwood, Ipe, etc
  • Is the wood new or older than 1 year?
  • Has the wood been stained previously with a different brand? Please specify brand name and type of stain used: Examples: Solid stain, Semi-Transparent Stain, etc.
  • Any additional info that would be useful

Once you supply us with the information, we will able to give you advice as to how to prep your wood and any needed instructions for the TWP application.

Please ask your questions in the comment area.

Thanks

I am planning to replace the older treated wood on my deck with new red cedar. Since i have to allow the wood to season and dry for 6-10 months before prepping and staining, is it best to do so while the deck is installed or should i leave it stacked in my yard and only install once it’s ready? Thank you.

Hello,
I plan to strip and brighten a Duracolor wood deck (500sqft) . What is the difference or advantages of TWP 1500 vs Timber oil stain.

I’m trying to figure out what happened with this stain project. I’ve used twp 1501 forever on this deck but this time it looks horrible. The painters sanded the deck and still it looks like this. Why? You can see in the first picture, the sanded deck (not in the foreground) and then another photo after the stain. Why does it look so horrible???

The last photo is it on my porch but I don’t have any before pictures. Its not as bad on the porch but it’s horrible on the deck. What went wrong?

Thanks!

Thanks for the quick reply. The photos came over backwards so I’m going to post another photo of the sanded deck. It was pale when they applied the stain.

Also, I don’t think the porch was all sanded first. Also attaching that photo again.

Thanks.

Thanks for the prompt reply! Is the need for stripping of the rest of the deck (not the part already re-stained) because of the inconsistency of the coverage?

I applied the 1500 cedartone stain to a redwood deck. The desk was sanded and washed properly before the first coat. The first coat went on nicely, was soaked in, and dried within 3 hours. I waited 12 hours to apply the second coat. I cleaned the deck with dry towels before i applied the second coat. I applied the second coat at 9 p.m. since it was a hot day. The outside temp when I applied the stain was about 75 degrees F. I woke up this morning to a deck with a wet stain. It did not dry or cure last night.

Suggestions?

My house is clad in vertical T&G rough sawn cedar. It was previously coated with Benjamin Moore Arborcoat semi in teak color. House now needs to be recoated. It’s been 5 years and cedar is looking very dried out and starting to show cracking. Some cupping now evident. Can I use TWP to restore the cladding? Is it offered in something close to teak color? Thanks, Bob

Hello, which stripper would you recommend for a 4 year old deck stained with Behr semi-transparent water based? We need a stripper that is pet friendly.

Also which stain would you recommend? We are in Northwestern Ontario, Canada ( which would have similar weather to Duluth, MN). We have full sun mostly, some part shade, and a little mildew.

Thank you.

We striped old behr stain with RAD Stripper last fall. A few days ago we sanded the deck and then used RAD Cleaner. Let dry 48 hrs. I loved the look of the wood after the cleaner. It was very bright and appeared new. Which is why I bought the clear. we applied 100 series clear with a sprayer. 2 coats, wet on wet in one hour. We needed to lightly wipe up two small areas of excess. I am not happy with the clear, the boards are different colors. Can I buy a twp 100 series color to mix in with the rest of our clear (we have a lot left over) and apply a 3rd coat? The pictures are after drying for 48hrs.

We have 7 month old PT deck. Did steps 1 and 2 prior to staining following all instructions. Deck had some chalkiness but looked great when wet. Stained 1 coat per instructions yesterday afternoon and it looked great. This morning not so much (see pics). What happened?

We need to refinish a 30 year old log cabin. Minimal remnants of any old stains. Getting estimates from some contractors. I understand the twp 200 is a one coat only application. Contractor quoted me price that will apply two coats for best protection and that two coats cannot be applied the same day. Should I stay away from this company or is it a thing to put a second coat on?

We are getting ready to prep and stain our deck with TWP 100. We read that the deck needs to be dry for 48 hours before staining. Is there a maximum amount of time between the prepping and staining in case we are not able to apply the stain 48 hours after prep (can we stain a week or two after prepping and still have good results)?

Does it matter if it rains on the deck after you prep it, but before you stain it?

We are using 25 year-old clear, all heart grade redwood for our new 16 x 48′ deck.
The redwood has never had any stain… applied and appears somewhat gray in color.
We would like to “preserve” and add a bit of color (brown) to the wood.
We live in northeast OH and receive all types of weather.
How would you suggest we proceed to add a bit of color and preserve the redwood.

Hi. I have a log sided home in the NC mountains with double level decking, some with covered porch some in full southern sun. I’ve used TWP100 for decking on a different NC home in the past with reasonable success, although I had challenges in reapplication over the years with increasing build up of sheen in some areas which would eventually lead to a peeling type failure. I’d like to again try TWP on the pressure treated pine decking here (and maybe eventually the regular pine siding). I understand the TWP100 series would likely be the better protecting product, but I’m wondering if the TWP1500 series would give me less application problems over time? I suspect your first reaction would be to first strip and brighten prior to reapplication, but I’m reluctant to do that because of the damage to the finish on lower level siding that can result from the runoff. My general procedure is to power wash with a mild bleach solution prior to staining (and yes even that requires caution with the lower level). Thanks.

Looking to re-stain a deck located in NE PA, so looks like 1500 is the choice. Not sure what prior stain was used. Recently powerwashed and most of stain on deck surface is gone but railings still stained. Any need to strip – or just clean and powerwash? Also, redwood seems to be the best match. 610 square feed of decking, not including railings. How much stain will I need?

We’ve purchased the TWP1500 PECAN in the past. Which color in the TWP 200 series most resembles the PECAN color in the 1500 series?

Also, if one color is available both series are they considered the same color? I have one of those TWP translucent color guides that gives a sense of the color. Perhaps that can be used.

My home is 30 years old. Wood siding has just been pressure-washed this week and is in good shape. Oxyclean was applied before the pressure washing to help with removal of dirt/graying/etc. Shingles have never been stained before. I can’t decided between TWP 1500 or TWP 200 (TWP 100 is not allowed in my state).

Thanks for the quick reply. Just to be clear…..these are NOT roof shingles, but shingles on the side of the house. Is your recommendation the same? If so:

Can you be specific as to why the TWP 200 is the better choice?

I live in Illinois. My deck was stained with TWP semi transparent cedar 100 about two years ago. The stain seems to be in good shape except there is dirt and mildew on top of the stain. Some parts appears oily, dirty, and can be scratched off. Can I just have the deck lightly power wash to solve the problem or what should I do? The stain might have been applied too heavily. I remember, it did not dry as quickly as I expected. Help!!

We just had a contractor stain our brand new deck of yellow pine and they over-applied and now we have shiny areas everywhere. Some areas are virtually a complete shiny coat. Tried using mineral spirits but this is too think of a coat. Used medium sandpaper which worked but there is so much over-application that we would need to restain and knowing where we sanded and didn’t will be impossible. Using coarse and medium coarse steel wool seems to work but will be time consuming. If we use the steel wool to remove are we ok to leave as is (not restain) for the year and see how it goes or is this not recommended as we will be inadvertently making very small scratches into the wood leaving unprotected wood?

I am looking to restrain my 27 year old cedar sided house with a semi transparent stain and prefer a semi gloss
Finish. The house has been stained with sikkens multiple times but hasn’t been recoated in 10 yrs. At this point it appears that I’m back to bear wood. I typically clean the wood with TSP , Clorox and water and then pressure wash. I love the appearance of the sickens but hate the 3 coat application as well as the longevity of the product. I plan to apply the stain with a pro grade Greco airless sprayer. My question; what type of finish can I expect from the TWP products, i.e. flat, semi gloss, gloss? I live in upstate NY, what type of longevity can i expect on my south facing siding? What TWP product would you recommend I use to stain my 2700 sq ft house?

We goofed! We used 1 1/2 gal. 1500 Cedartone with 1 gal paint thinner because we wanted the stain to be lighter in color. Instead, we are so worried that there is not enough pigment and oil to protect the wood deck. Our con hart clear redwood (no knots) deck (30′ X 16′) is 23 years old and was last stained with TWP two years ago but this time the sample stain was darker. We cleaned the whole deck with Preserva Renewer & Cleaner, let it completely dry and sanded it with an 80 grit belt sander going with the grain of the wood. We took all of the old stain off. Did we wreck our expensive beautiful deck? Wish we had just used the straight Cedartone but what do we do now? In a sample spot, we tried putting the Cedartone on top of the stain we applied but it just sits on top, does not penetrate and dries. Should we go over the deck with thinner so that the Cedartone would penetrate or would that make a mess? If we wait until next year to do something else, what should we do? Maybe we didn’t let the sample dry long enough before thinking it was too dark. How long does it take to dry? We know this is great stain but need your help. If the wood that age doesn’t have enough oil, will it crack? We don’t like the way it looks. Stain is too thin and doesn’t look like it is stained.

We have a cedar fence that is six months old and the fencing contractor sprayed it with something, possibly Thompson’s Timber Oil. It’s clear, no stain. It has some black streaking now that looks like mold or mildew. If we wanted to apply TWP 1500 Natural, how would we need to prep the wood prior to application? And would it require 1 or 2 coats?

Pam

We have 700 square feet of new cedar fence in northern California to stain and would like to use TWP 1500 Natural. I have several questions:
1. Can we just brush the dust off or do we need to use a cleaner?
2. Do we need to use 1 or 2 coats?
3. We have extremely hot (over 100 degree) summers and it’s already in the 90s. Would it actually be better to wait until cooler temps in autumn to stain?
4. If we wait until autumn to stain, how would we need to prep the wood prior to staining?
Thank you very much.

We recently used TWP 100, Dark Oak, to stain our solid Cypress posts for the front and back of our house.

We were told by the salesman to stain 3 sides while they were on runners on the ground, allow them to dry for an hour and flip and do the final side. We were also told that TWP does not get darker with multiple coats. The salesman said “it’s color the first time, is it’s color no matter how many times you repeat.”

Well, we stained the 3 sides on the ground, flipped and stained the 4th. This created unsightly overlap dark marks/runs from the other 3 sides bleeding onto the 4th. These areas are much darker.

Also, after the posts were cut to be installed, we stained the ends to help prevent rot. The top ends slowly soaked in and seeped into the color on all 4 sides at the very tops of the posts causing the same unsightly darker color.

I guess my questions are:

1. Do I have to sand these all down and reapply evenly now that they are up and installed?

2. If I continually apply TWP to the beams, will there be a point when the beam just won’t take anymore stain and the final color will be the forever color?

Option 2 would be best for me as we have 14 of these posts that I would need to sand in order to get the color correct.

Please help!

Would a combination of sanding and stripping be more effective? For instance, sand with a belt sand at 60 grit just to take off 1/32 of the top and then hose it down with stripper to pull out any remaining color before reapplying stain with a foam roller 48 hours later?

We used 1500 on our deck two years ago and it looked amazing. However, this season we used the 1500 series (after cleaning as directed) and it rained. The product did not “dry” or “cure” and does not look good at all so we are going to do it again. Do we need to strip or just reclean with appropriate product and reapply? Or is there something else your recommend to remove the product like a stripper? Thanks!

Hi! I’ve spent HOURS sanding off a solid stain that was badly peeling from my deck. I have no idea how old the deck is, as we bought our home with the existing deck. It seems to be a combination of cedar and pressure treated pine. I think some of the boards have been replaced over the years. I don’t want to be in the position of having to sand the entire deck again. My deck is in the St. Louis, MO area, so it is exposed to all 4 seasons. I have 2 questions: which product would you recommend, the 100 or 1500 series? Also, since it has been sanded to bare wood, can I stain right away to protect the wood? Thank you so much!

I mixed 1 gallon clear 100 and 1 gallon of dark oak in a new plastic 2 gallon paint bucket. I finished staining my handrails, but then I learned the weather man had put rain in the forecast. So I stopped and decided to wait to stain the rest. Can I store my stain in that plastic bucket for a week or until the rain is gone? Or do I need to pour it back into its original containers? Thanks!
