Tips on Applying TWP 100 Pro Series in 2024
TWP 100 Stain Series Wood and Deck Protectant has a coverage rate of 150-300 sq. ft. per gallon, per coat. Best to measure the wood’s square footage to determine how many gallons you’ll need for your project. On wood decks, be sure to include all the railings and steps.
Before applying TWP 100 Series Deck Stain be sure the wood surface has been cleaned properly using a wood cleaner. Use a broom or leaf blower to remove any debris that may have fallen onto the wood since cleaning it.
Applying TWP 100 Series Wood Stain
The wood must be dry for a minimum of 48 hours prior to staining and the air temperature should be above 50 degrees. Check your local forecast to make certain there will be several dry days before and after the day you want to stain.
On the day of staining be sure you have all the equipment on site that you will need. Wear protective gloves and safety glasses at all times. Mix the TWP Wood Stain thoroughly using a paint stick before and several times during use. Using plastic or tarps to cover any landscaping, siding, windows, or concrete that you don’t want any stain on.
Start with the harder to reach areas first. On wood siding, gazebos, or playsets start up high and work your way down. On a deck, start with the spindles and railings first and stain the deck floor last.
Use a brush, stain pad applicator, or pump sprayer to apply TWP 100 Deck Stain. The first coat of stain is a saturation coat. If it soaks in quickly, and the wood seems thirsty, an additional coat may be necessary. If so, apply the second coat within 30 minutes of the first coat, essentially applying them “wet on wet.” The more TWP 100 Series Stain that you can get to soak in, the better protection it will provide.
Be cautious of over-applying TWP 100 Series Wood Stain or performance may be jeopardized. If you notice excessive stain puddles or drips that aren’t being absorbed, use a stain rag or brush to remove them. Stopping in the middle of a piece of wood or board can result in unsightly lap marks. To eliminate the chance of lap marks finish staining each board from end to end once you start.
TWP 100 Series Wood Protectant has outstanding penetration properties and will dive deep into the wood. It is not prone to flaking or peeling like other stains. TWP 100 Series will simply fade after several years and can then be cleaned and recoated as needed.
What is the closest color TWP 100 semi solid to redwood semi transparent?
Light House or Redwood Forest.
Correction: I brushed off the stripper, not scraped as I mistakenly mentioned in my questions a minute ago.
I cleaned and stripped, brightened and neutralized the garage siding yesterday of Cedartone 101. Tomorrow at 11:30 a.m., it will be 48 hours. I had to scrape for and against the grain to get as much product out as I could. Should I stain in the direction of the wood which means I’d have to brush it all in the same direction? Is it okay to stain in early evening when the sun stops shining directly on the siding? Thanx from Florida.
Stain with the direction of the wood from end to end. You can stain in the evening.
thank you
You are welcome. Make sure it does not rain the same night after applying.
I have a 4 year old cedar deck that we hire a contractor to stain every 2 years with your TWP transparent dark oak stain. My daughter’s puppy managed to chew on several areas of the deck. We sanded the areas and went to apply the stain but it doesn’t stain it as dark as the rest of the deck. Is there a less transparent stain in the same color that we could apply to these areas so it would match a bit better?
Thank you
No, the issue is the wood is not as absorbent there now due to the sanding so it will stain lighter no matter what.
What type of sprayer should be used with Twp 101 on wood that has been protected with Twp 101 for years?

Can I apply a second coat after the first coat is completely dry. We had someone apply the first coat, but they didn’t do a very good job. I really think it needs another coat to even it out.
That would depend if the wood will accept another coat. Do a test board and make sure it dries properly.
I am planning to use TWP 100 semi-transparent cedar over a deck that had Penofil transparent redwood stain before. I have cleaned, stripped and used brightener.
#1. I am expecting the semi-transparent will cover the slight color variances. Is that safe to assume ?
#2. I am in Washington state and right now we have high temp of <70 with lows in <50's so we get dew. How much before the dew drops should I have my stain on ? I am able to start early in the day but would be in the sun until early afternoon and I see warning about not applying the direct sun.
#3 Or is it ok to apply in direct sun if it is in the mid 60's temperature wise ?
#4. Can I use 'restore a deck' clearner for maintenance ? I used that on the Penofil and it seemed to strip it.
1. We would need to see pictures. TWP does not cover anything but it may blend it.
2. The dew must fully dry off for a few hours before applying.
3. Yes.
4. The RAD Cleaner/Brightener Kit us sed fore when you are going to prep when reapplying. Do not use for general cleaning when you have no intention of reapplying.
I cleaned , stripped, brightened, and sanded my cedar deck and put in the TWP 100 cedar stain this weekend. Everything was dry for three days+. The application went wonderful and pigment was great. Temperature was the typical for Washington above 65 degrees when we started at 2 pm. Got done around 6:00 pm and then heard weather report contrary to what they had said all week. Light rains or of a drizzle starting 11 pm. Then it stopped and started in the morning but never dropped below 55 all night. I used a leaf blower to knock off the nice beading up (puddling) but could not walk on it because it had not hardened yet. This week is expected near 70 this week. There anything I can do or should do ? Is the intrigrity compromised ?
It should be fine.
Good. All I found in the instructions said no rain or traffic for 12 hrs yet I got rain in 4 to 6 hrs. #1 do you think it is ok because it was not a heavy rain ? #2 should I give it more time to cure before putting furniture on? #3 would you recommend a new maintenance coat in 2 years or less?
1. It typically can take rain sooner than 12 hours.
2. 48 hours or fully dry.
3. 2-3 years.
I really am impressed with the responsiveness and help you offer through this forum. It helped me immensely. Final question I have.
> How do I just ‘wash’ this between stain coatings and what products are safe to use?
I could not find specific instructions to maintain a TWP 100 deck before using the Cleaner for a maintenance coat in 2-3 years.
We do not offer products to “wash” between coatings. Best to just use water as you do not want to harm the coating.
What kind of thinner should I use to clean up TWP 100 series? I am intending to use an airless sprayer and want to clean out my sprayer properly after I’m finished.
Mineral spirits will work.
I just applied a light coat of 100 series honeytone to some very pale, almost white cedar. I love honeytone on red/brownish cedar, but it looks too yellow on white wood. Can I apply a darker color over the honeytone if I wait until spring? Or do I need to strip off the honeytone first?
If you prep first with the Gemini Restore Kit, then you can go darker: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
I applied one coat of TWP 100 stain today. I received it in the mail a couple of days ago. I noted after applying stain to one level of the deck, that when I stirred the 5 gallon container with a longer stick, there was about 1 inch of completely coagulated pigment at the bottom of the barrel. I would think it would have been shaken prior to mailing it. This is the first coat of stain on a one year old deck. I didn’t apply a second coat because one of the articles said to apply only one coat the first time. Will it be OK? It seems that I can’t apply a second coat now that it has partially dried. It would be 24hours until I can apply another coat. Will this affect only the intensity of color, and not the stain itself?
You always have to stir before using. Just one coat this year and another as needed in 12-24 months for newer wood: https://twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
What should the moisture content be for 1/2″cedar fence slats before I apply TWP 100? I am afraid that if I wait too lond the cedar may begin to split.
15% or less but if new wood, it has nothing to do with how dry it is but how porous the wood is: https://twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
I am staining an exterior pine ceiling (covered deck). Do you suggest a pre-stain wood conditioner? If so, what brand? I am asking because we stained our back deck with TWP and the pine ceiling turned out blotchy and uneven. I am trying to avoid the same mistake on the front deck.
No, do not use a conditioner.
After prepping my deck using Gemini products, I applied a reasonable single coat of TWP 100 Redwood to my deck last night (a charged “deck roller” covered five or six 16′ boards). After an hour, I used a dry roller to sop up any remaining “wet” stain, as instructed (it all looked wet). This morning (11 hours post-application), the deck is tacky and still looks wet. I’ve been using TWP-100 and Gemini products for four years but I don’t remember if it’s supposed to look this wet. Temp at application was 83*F, low overnight was 61*. High today is 101*. Attached is a picture. Because I left one area untreated, the difference is quite evident. 🙂 Am I just being impatient, or is my deck going to have a high-gloss sheen? Thanks!
No, it is not supposed to be shiny and is over-applied through the years as it has built up. It will dry but will take time, maybe up to a week. You can wipe it down with mineral spirits and rags after 24 hours to help. Make sure to saturate all oily rags in water and lay flat to dry outside after.
Next time you do it you should strip it down to the bare wood: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
Thank you!
OK to apply in the morning before temps reach low 90’s in the afternoon? OK to apply in the evening after temps drop below 90, or is it a problem if the wood is still hot from direct sun?
Yes, that is fine. Do in am prior to hot temps later.
Hi, it worked out well after I let the deck dry for more than a week after I stained with TWP 101 and cleaning up the excess with mineral spirit. But, off late when the weather got beyond 90F, I see sap oozing out of the knots in some wood boards. It was the case before I started the stripping process. I had scrapped with a scrapper, tried oxy clean couple of times and let the wood dry. It was pretty clean, dry without any sap after the stripping process. But it is oozing again after applying stain. What can I do to fix this oozing sap on the stained deck?
You cannot stop or prevent sap from leaching from the wood.
I stained a deck it has shiny spots how do I fix that
Hello, we have answered your question two times. See below.
I stained my deck it dried and now I have shiny spot how do I fix that
See here: https://twpstainhelp.com/twp-stain-is-spotty-or-shiny/
I stained a deck part of it is under cover 24 hour after stained the under cover part still has wet spots how do I fix that
https://twpstainhelp.com/twp-stain-is-spotty-or-shiny/
how long do you wait after staining before heavy traffic
24-48 hours
I’m planning on purchasing TWP200 stain for my wood shingled siding. My original plan was to brush it on, however, it seems that a pump or airless sprayer is an option to save time. I was under the assumption that solvent based stains could not be sprayed on based on some videos I watched.
Can someone give guidance as to the best way to apply and suggest sprayers. Will any sprayer work? Should I consider the WS TWP product instead?
Thank for any suggestions and/or anecotal evidence as to the best approach to take.
Any quality pump sprayer would work when applying the TWP stains. Make sure it has a fan tip, not a cone spray pattern.
I applied TWP this morning, it looks so dull. Can I add another coat? What might happen if I do? It sucked it right up.
TWP is not supposed to be shiny. Adding too much can lead to drying issues. Beat to leave as is.
We put our 2 coats of twp 100 dark oak on today. Can a third coat be put on? It looks like it could use it
No, as it may not dry correctly. It looks good!
Ok ….Txs! Maybe in the fall b4 winter?
Next Spring.
When is the best time of day to apply twp 100 on deck. Michigan. Lots of afternoon sun… thanks for your advice
Not in full sun between 11am and 2pm and not above 90 degrees.
I applied stain remover, did pressure washing, applied cleaner/brightner on my deck. I am planning to sand the deck with 80 grit sand paper. 1. Do I have to wash/rinse the deck after sanding? 2. I was assuming since already brightner was used , using 80 grit would open up the grain? 3. If washing/cleaning is not required after sanding, how long do I have to wait before staining with TWP 101?
Yes, clean and brighten after sanding: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
Sanding closes the grain, it does not open it. Wait 48 hours to stain.
Hi, I followed your suggestion, didnt sand, I did wet on wet application. It is bit shiny, I assume there is some excess stain which didnt soak in. What do you suggest to remove the excess stain other than rags? I did try with rags, it does remove some excess stain, but, I see it is bit shiny in some deck boards but not on others.
Mineral spirits with rags. Saturate any oily rags in water and lay flat to dry outside.
It will also dry and cure on its own.
Hi, I applied mineral spirits and wiped with rags. It did do a decent job in removing excess stain. But I still see some glossy patches as in attached images. Do you think leaving to dry would cure it?
Yes.

TWP 100 – a few questions:
1. We have access to a power washer and Behr all in one wood cleaner. Should both be used and if so in what order?
2. We have a fence which was previously coated with TWP 100 several years back. It has began to fade and is due for re-application. Does all prior TWP 100 need to be removed or can we clean, allow to dry for 48 hours and stain over it? (same color, same product).
Thanks!
1. Do not use the Behr cleaner, use the Gemini Restore Kit with pressure washing: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
2. Not all needs to be removed, just use the prep kit while pressure washing, dry for 48 hours and then stain.
Appreciate the quick response. Given a tight timeline and the fact that we happen to have behr already in stock:
1. Could we reapply with after pressure washing only (and of course 48 hours to dry)
2. Will the Behr cleaner hurt the existing stain or application of the new stain?
Thanks again!
The Behr actually damages wood fibers and is not good for wood prep with the TWP. It will also “bleach” out the existing stain.
We are now sanding our deck which has been maintained for several years. Unfortunately the pergola and some Railing were sanded with 100 grid. We are now changing it to 80 for rest railing and 60 grid for the floor. My question is:
1. Do we still need to pressure wash with cleaner and brightener after sanding? Before Sanding we already pressured washed the deck with Behr cleaner.
2. What is the highest PSI allowed to pressure wash after sanding?
3. How long do we need to complete the stain after 48 hours dry time? I learned it is better to stain within one day. If it takes one week to finish the stain, does it impact on the soaking?
4. Is one coat enough after the sanding?
5. Is there any possibility to correct the mistake that part of the deck was sanded with 100 grid? Do we need to re-sand with 80 grid?
6. Is TWP100 allowed in CA? If not, which one to buy?
Thanks for your feedback in advance!
1. Yes.
2. 1600 psi
3. Try to sain all on the same day.
4. Yes.
5. The cleaner and brightener will help to open up the wood grain.
6. No, use the TWP 1500: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-1500-series
Many thanks for your prompt feedback!
1. I am struggling with the requirement of staining in one day. Is it ok we clean, dry and stain sectionally? Exactly to describe is e.g.
Day 1: clean pergola left side
Day 2-3: dry
Day 4: stain pergola left side
Day 5-6: dry
Day 7: clean pergola right side
Day 8-9: dry
Day 10: stain pergola right side
The problem is our deck is big and only my husband staining it. We are not able to stain in one day.
2. I read some reviews mentioning to wipe off excess oil with TWP1500. Otherwise deck can have some shiny spots. Is that true?
3. I learned one or two coats is sometimes depending on the wood age and type even in the different area of the deck. Our pergola looks more brighter than floor after sanding. How can I decide whether the deck is soaked well with one coat? In other word, how can I know whether a second coat is necessary?
Thanks a again!
1. No. Clean and prep in sections but wait until all prep is done before staining anything. You can break the staining into sections if needed.
2. Only if you over apply.
3. Just do one coat for the pergola.
1. The total deck is about 1700 sq. How many do we need to buy?
2. Do you have tools like brush, roller to recommend?
3. Can we use your Gemini kit to clean? How many to buy?
4. Do we still need to scrub the deck during cleaning process?
5. How long can we receive the product after ordering?
Thanks
1. About 15-20 gallons
2. Yes: https://www.twpstain.com/wood-and-deck-stains/application-tools/brushes-stain-pads
3. 2 Kits: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
4. Pressure wash.
5. About 2 weeks.
1. Is 15-20 gallons one coat for 1700 sq?
2. What is your return policy in case some remaining?
3. How long is the lifetime for unopened can?
Thanks!
1. Two coats for the floors, just one for the pergola.
2. https://www.twpstain.com/refund
3. https://twpstainhelp.com/shelf-life-of-twp/
1. I am struggling to decide the color. I attached two pictures of our deck after the sanding. Picture 1 is the pergola. Which TWP1500 color is almost closed to it?
Picture 2 is the floor. Several small areas look like red. Will the cleaner/brightener remove this red? Or can cedar 1501 or pican 1520 cover it?
2. Why is no roller sold at your online store?
Thanks
1. Which color of TWP1500 is almost closed to our sanded pergola? See picture 1
2. After sanding, several areas of the deck floor look like red. Does it mean too much sanding? Can cedar1501 or pican1520 cover the red? See picture 2
3. Which color is the darkest one? Cedar1501, pican1520 or California redwood1511?
4. Why don’t you sell roller at your online store? Not recommended?
Thanks!
1. All stain colors will enhance your grain and will not look like your sanded pictures. See the photo albums for help: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-1500-series-stain-colors-and-photo-albums/
2. That is your normal wood color and not an issue.
3. Nothing will match your sanded color.
4. Rollers do not work very well. Use a stain pad or brush.
I am going to place the order right now. Another question: which size brush is matched for the railing? is the 4 inch Wooster brush good for it? Our railing is 1.5 inch width each side of all 4 sides. The length is 35 inch.
Thanks!
The Wooster 4″ or 6″ will work.
When I sign up the newsletter, can I get a coupon? My order amount is more than $900.
Sorry, but we are not offering any promo codes at this time.
Thanks for your help!
I just placed the order. The order No is B2C3089674.
1. By the way could you please send me a link about how to stain? Our whole family members will try to stain the deck together in order to finish it in one day. We don’t want to make some mistakes to ruin the stain.
2. How long should we wait to install a Polycarbonate Corrugated Roof to the pergola after staining?
3. In case we are not able to stain in one day, is it still ok to stain the rest deck on the second day?
4. Can the deck be stained after 24 hours dry in San Jose CA? It is currently dry and hot.
Thanks a lot!
1. https://twpstainhelp.com/twp-stain-wet-on-wet-application/
2. Week.
3. Yes but do not do a second coat the next day.
4. 48 after prep.
Hi, we are going to stain the deck next week. I still have a couple of questions.
1. How to avoid bird droppings or walnut oil from the walnut tree after the cleaning? It will take 48 hours to dry.
2. Do you have instructions about the TWP cleaner and brightener online? The text on the bottle is quite small.
3. To double confirm again, is it ok to finish the stain within two days? No second coat next day. E.g. First day staining the pergola and railing.
4. Can a cotton T-shirt be whipped off the excess oil?
Thanks
1. Tarp it after it dries.
2. We do not.
3. Yes.
4. Yes but saturate oily rags in water and lay flat to dry outside.
Thanks!
“Tarp it after dries”.
How to evaluate if it dries?
Our main concern is the deck floor, which sometimes has birds dropping and walnut oil.
We do it like following. Is it ok?
Day 1 afternoon finish cleaning.
Day 2 drying.
Day 3 drying and tarp the floor.
Day 4 or day 5 stain.
Could you please give some short feedback? Thanks
Your steps should work.
Hi,
1. the TWP cleaner should be used on wet wood or dry wood?
2. Can this spot (oil) be cleaned by TWP cleaner? See picture
1. Either.
2. The oil will most likely not come out fully as it is deep in the wood. Once you prep and stain, it will blend much better.
Hi, we just finished the deck stain. The deck looks now so beautiful especially under the sunshine.
Unfortunately there are some stain dropping on the concrete floor. Would you please advise how to clean them?
Thank!
Try a graffiti remover cleaner from your paint store and pressure washing.
Had to strip deck I’m going to sand it if rains after I sand it do I have to clean it again¹and what is a acceptable moisture content.
Yes, clean after sanding. Do not sand finer than 60-80 grit. Let dry for 48 hours. The moisture content of less than 15%.
after using a stripper and brightener and then sanding entire deck using 80 grit and letting dry for 2 days am i ready for stain? the reason i was going to use a different stain and chose to stick with twp natural cedar tone semi transparent
You should be okay to stain now.
after i sanded my deck was curious as to weather water would bead on the wood. to my surprise it did bead. being afraid to stain and the stain not soaking into the wood because i was worried i sanded to much so i washed and brightened the wood. now after waiting 2 more days for it to dry can i go ahead just start staining without sanding it again.
TWP 100 what if a surprise rain storm hits in less than 24 hours
That would depend if it had a chance to dry or not.
I applied the stain using wet on wet guidelines. There appeared to be some pooling as it was drying which I wiped off with a rag, but the stickiness the stain adhered to the rag and left behind white specs of cotton in the stain. Do I wait for the oil to finish curing and then clean? What do you recommend?
Use some paint thinner and rags and wipe it off now. Saturate any oily rags with water and lay flat to dry outside when dry.
Has anyone ever experienced these leopard like spots after stripping and utilizing the brightener. Tried straight bleach on them, sanding and scrubbing the you know what out of them. I am going to strip and brighten again.
Thanks
That is something leeching out of your hardwood. Not sure what it is.
Hello,
I purchased your clear twp protectant. On the can it states it will age my deck to gray. I don’t want it gray. Can I buy a twp stain and put the clear on top of the stain? What is your best seller? My railings are black! Any help will be appreciated! Thank you!
No, you cannot add the clear on top of a stain color. TWP also cannot be applied over a black stain.
Thank you! Not much info on the clear here on the website. I will take the unopened can back and get the stain! Thx again!
I have a 40×20 deck with a 3ft spindle railing on one side. Also a small 6×6 porch with 3ft spindle railings on both sides. Looking at using TWP 100. It has been stained in the past but the stain is getting old. Wondering if this is the right product (located at cabin in northern WI), what wash to use and how much stain is needed. Will one coat cover? Thanks.
What is total sq footage when you add up the floor, railings, steps, etc? As for prep, we would need to see some pictures.
Approximately 1,000 square feet.
Still need some pictures.
Can’t get pictures for a few weeks. In meantime lets assume one coat.
We need the pictures for the proper way to prep. What products to use, etc. As for stain amount, about 7 gallons for 1 coat.
Here some pictures. Please advise. Thanks
It looks like a solid opaque stain on the deck rails and where it has not worn off. This cannot be stripped fully if a solid stain so that means you would have to power sand if you want to use the TWP.
I have prepped my deck and waiting 48 hrs to stain. there is a chance of rain the next day after I apply the stain. Is 24 hours enough time for the stain to dry or must you have a 48 hour time for the stain to set?
Yes, 24 hours is good.
I have stripped and sanded my pressure treated wood deck and it looks great. Swept and rinsed the sawdust from the deck and let dry. Now, it is raining. Will this hurt the surface of the wood for applying TWP 100? will let dry for 48 hours before applying.
Rain does not harm any prep. Just let dry for 48 hours.
Thank you, that is great news. I’ve googled “rain after sanding deck” and one site said rain would ruin your work and you’d have to sand all over again. Glad that is not true. Cant wait to put your product on!
I applied the first and only coat to my stairs and band boards a couple days ago. I did the decking itself in the fall and now will apply a maintenance coat in a couple days. Curious if the stairs and band boards can have that 2nd coat put on at the same time as well, only a 5-7 days after the first?
No, second coats need to be applied wet on wet. Otherwise, it is best to do another coat in 6-12 months if needed.
Reading the label on the can, my twp 120 pecan says to only apply to bare wood – but, most of the advice I’ve seen here says put an initial coat on and then another follow up in the spring (assuming first coat went on in the fall) – any issues putting that 2nd coat on even though it seems adverse to the label? Thank you.
You can clean and reapply TWP with another coat of TWP but you cannot apply TWP over a different brand of stain.
I ordered TWP 100 Pecan 120 stain for the first coat on my “new” deck which was left to weather for 12 mos., as directed. The receipt in my files says Pecan was ordered. The painter used the 5 gallon cans when they arrived. I went to order more tonight to put the second coat on this year and checked the can in the basement to see if I had all the correct info. I found the can was labeled “cedartone.” Can I put “Pecan” over the Cedartone that was put down last year, or must I use Cedartone?
Thank you.
You can use the Pecan over it. Checking your order email from last year shows Cedartone was purchased.
I used twp to stain my deck 3 years ago. It needs to be freshened up. Would one coat suffice for this or do I need to plan on applying the stain just as I did the first time? Also do I use the cleaning kit for applying a coat on an already stained deck? Thanks!
Prep with the kit: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
and apply the two coats.
I need to stain a new cedar dock that has been in the weather for 2 summers in Minnesota and not stained or sealed. I would like to use twp 100. I would like to keep the color just to the natural weathered grey that it has become. Anything I need to know about product choice or application and tools needed? I am a housewife and have never done this work before.
Kindest Regards,
Jeri
Sorry but that is not really possible as you always have to prep when applying TWP and that will remove the current gray oxidation from your wood.
Thank you. So how do I proceed with the prep?
Kindest Regards,
Jeri
See this: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
I was told by a lake neighbor that I needed to leave the wood alone to “age” for a season or 2. Bad advice I expect?
Kindest regards
Jeri
You can prep and stain now.
I’ve installed a new cedar fence and have let it age for 6 weeks. Can I apply the TWP 101 stain now, or should I wait a bit longer? For a new fence, do I need to use a cleaner or perform any other prep before applying the stain? I also have a section of older fence that has an older stain, applied a number of years ago. What prep should I perform on the older section of fence before applying the stain.
See here about new wood:

We would need to see a picture of the older wood to see how it would be best to prep.
I read the above article on new wood before sending my question in to you. The problem is that most people aren’t going to know whether their wood has mill glaze or if it’s rough sawn. From the article it seems like boards for decks would typically have mill glaze, but fence pickets would be rough sawn, but it’s not clear to me that this a correct assumption on my part. I’ve attached pictures of my new fence and the existing fence.
The difference between smooth decking and rough sawn is very obvious just by looking at it. Rough sawn has a very noticeable raised texture. See pic.
Your fence boards look smooth on the side in the picture but they may be rough sawn on the opposite side? Your PTP at the bottom is definitely smooth wood with mill glaze. Best to wait a total of 3-4 months and clean and brighten all for prep before applying.
The older wood needs to be stripped. Use the Restore A Deck Stripper with the Thickening Gel additive to cling to the vertical. Brightener after.

The article also seems to indicate that for new wood, I should only apply a single coat since two coats might not be completely absorbed by the wood. So my plan should be to wait 3-4 months to stain the new wood, then use something to clean and brighten the wood, and finish up with one coat of stain? Is the RAD Brightener all I need to use to clean and brighten the new fence?
Thanks for the responses!
Yes, that is all correct. Just one coat. You will need both the RAD Cleaner and the RAD Brightener. Not just the brightener.
Should/could this product be used on a unfinished maple door? Will the color turn out like the sample?
Sorry but no, this is not for maple doors.
Plan is to stain with TWP 100, 4 years since previous coat of same, on cedar siding. Have 16 gal stored at room temp ready to apply, it would be expensive to strip, clean & re-apply. Do you think these forecast temp’s for November 6-7 Wed-Thur (see attached forecast) will be ok?
Yes, that is okay.
I just finished applying the TWP 100 on my deck after cleaning and brightening the 5 year old cedar. What maintenance is needed to keep the finish looking new? What do I need to do after the first year and then on? Am I going to have to strip it all down again in a few years to reapply or is there some way of just recoating it? I have about 600 square feet of deck and do not look forward to a total strip down again.
Clean and brighten with this as needed: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
Every 2-3 years is normal.
I have a house in Virginia with a thirteen year old SYP pressure treated wrap around deck covered by a roof.
I stained the deck twice with Sikkens solid, the last time being 5 years ago. I spent this last week belt sanding the entire 9ftX200 ft deck. I will never apply a solid again. I am going to use the TWP 100 series of stain. The boards were final sanded with 80 grit paper and look really good. I have cleaned the deck and am going to use brighter before staining. Should I use 1 or 2 coats of stain? This has been a monster project and I will never sand this deck ever again!
Just one coat since you sanded.
I have a new house in N.C. that has approx 1300 sq feet of new deck and porches almost under roof. The builder used regular press treat deck boards and kiln dried pressure treated on tails and posts. He wanted to use other products but I am insisting on your 100 series semi translucent after much research. He dosnt think he needs to clean the wood with chemicals your site suggests and just wants to pressure wash and spray after dries. I have 2 concerns first will the color we picked look the same on the two different type of pressure treat? Second will he cause issues by not using your cleaning product prior to stain ? Also I noticed that you suggested one coat on new wood ,but in another section your instruction said to apply a second coat as the wood absorbs the stain. Can you clarify? One last question, does the 100 have a algicide, I am concerned with so much deck under roof that this may promote fungus or algae.
Thanks
See this about KDAT instructions: https://twpstainhelp.com/kdat-and-twp-wait-period-for-new-wood/
You cannot skip the steps and weathering. Only 1 coat.
You sell 4″ and 6″ brushes. The boards of deck are 5″. Which brush would do a better job? Thanks.
Either is fine and apply the same.
Thanks. One more question: if I order stain on Monday for PDX, when would I actually get it (knowing that it is shipped ground)?
Portland? 4-6 business days.
We stained with series 100 in The Rustic color we don’t like it it’s to red can we go back over it with black walnut and will it cover it won’t be wet on wet because we finish staining and don’t like the color
No, it will probably not take well and will be shiny and sticky if you do this. You can remove it with this: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
Are we able to return the 5 unopened gallons we didn’t need?
Did you order from our store? If so, see our policy here. https://www.twpstain.com/refund
We have now cleaned and brightened our deck, and know to wait 48 hours for it to dry before staining. What is the recommended moisture percent before staining? I’d like to be able to check with a moisture meter to make sure it has dried out enough. We get a heavy dewfall and in order to stain not in full sun we will have to stain early in the morning.
15% or less but two days of drying and you should be fine.
what is the dry time before use after applying ?
12-24 hours is normal but can vary based on wood age and temps.
Hi,
My treated pine deck has a painted finish that is peeling in spots, I believe it is latex. Is there a product you recommend for stripping the old paint off? Tried pressure washing but it’s really hard on the wood, figured there’s a product to loosen the paint prior to washing. Is the TWP 100 product appropriate for my application?
Thanks,
Nick
Correction, found the old can, it was stained with Akso-Nobel semi transparent. What is the correct process / products for staining with TWP 100.
Thanks,
Nick
Post a picture of the current stain on the deck.
See pics
That is a solid stain, not semi-transparent. It cannot be stripped. You would have to sand to remove all of this if you want to use a stain like the TWP.
