Need Some Help With TWP Stains?

by TWP Help

Last Updated on January 30, 2023 by TWP Help

We are here to help you with your TWP exterior deck or wood restoration project for 2024!

TWP is an advanced wood preservative/protectant registered by the EPA. Performance and longevity can vary though depending on the wood type, how the wood is prepped, the age of wood, and how the TWP is applied. We want everyone who has decided to use TWP 100, 1500, or 200 Series to have the best possible results.

TWP Stain Tips and Help

When asking questions please give us some information about your wood restoration project:

  • What structure is your wood? Examples would be: Deck, Wood Siding, Fence, etc
  • What species is the wood? Examples: Treated Pine, Cedar, Redwood, Ipe, etc
  • Is the wood new or older than 1 year?
  • Has the wood been stained previously with a different brand? Please specify brand name and type of stain used: Examples: Solid stain, Semi-Transparent Stain, etc.
  • Any additional info that would be useful

Once you supply us with the information, we will able to give you advice as to how to prep your wood and any needed instructions for the TWP application.

Please ask your questions in the comment area.

Thanks

Hi – I did the restore a deck 2 days ago and am prepping to stain my deck this afternoon but the boards still don’t feel completely dried. Is it ok to stain on slightly damp boards? We are getting a thunderstorm Friday and rain is forecasted every other day for a few days (lol), so It’s either today or wait a week for enough drying time. Thoughts?

I have 80 feet of red cedar 2”x2” baluster railing. The balusters are spaced 4” apart and are 42” high. How much TWP 100 do I need for a 2 coat wet on wet application?
Thanks!!

What are the differences in your 100, 200, and 1500 series? Also, do you have any retail locations that we can go and view your different color options in person before making a purchase? We need a sealer and stainer for our wood deck.

I used TWP 1501 cedartone on my new deck after waiting the correct amount of time. We applied the stain Just several months ago. We followed the instructions and read all through the website. My deck boards are turning black and I don’t like it at all. What can be done to fix this. This stain was rather expensive and thought was going to be the right way to go but I hate the black that it is turning on my new, very expensive deck.

If it’s is dirt or pollen, how can I fix it. It looks terrible. I keep the deck very clean so I don’t believe it’s grime or mildew or something like that.

Yes Hi, is it OK to mix 1501 and 200 series together? I’m applying 1501 Cedartone and 200 Clear together 50/50 on my redwood decks to match the redwood siding on the house. I live in California and can’t get 100 series. I had the siding done with TWP about 7 years ago the contractor used the 50/50 mix of 1501 and 205 and it came out great. I don’t think I saw the “205” series on your website. Let me know. Thanks Tim (561)309 5845

I am looking for a finish to protect two parts of my 1912 home – brand new white cedar shingle siding on my back porch and the bargeboards on my roofline I’d like to leave unpainted. I believe the bargeboards are cypress, but I have been patching and augmenting them with cedar as the color and woodgrain match. I would like both of these areas to retain their natural color as much as possible, without greying or fading over time. I don’t mind re-applying something every few years if necessary, but a no-sand re-application would be necessary. I was originally looking at the TWP 100 series finish, but I live in Ohio so that is not an option. Would the 1500 be an option? Thanks.

I have a pergola made of cedar wood. I had the wood in dry storage for 1 year before staining the wood using TWP 100 Pro Dark Oak 103 and then constructing the pergola. The pergola has now been constructed for 2 years.

The pergola receives direct sun for part of the day and some of the stain is beginning to peel off. So, it is now time to restain. What steps and products do you suggest I use to restain the pergola?

Thanks!

Thank you. One follow up question…..my pergola is constructed using Simpson Strong-Tie Outdoor Accents products such as the one found in the following link. Is the Gemini Restore Kit safe to use on these products without harming the finish?

An additional follow up question for you, please. After using the Gemini Restore Kit products tomorrow and waiting the 48 hour drying time, I plan to use a Chapin pump-up sprayer to apply the stain to my pergola and back brush where needed. Should a second coat be applied (while the first coat is still wet) to all surface areas or only to the horizontal surface areas while leaving the vertical surface areas with just one coat? As a reminder, my pergola was first stained two years ago with two coats of the same product.

Just wanting to be sure I am approaching this correctly before I begin. Thanks once again!

We have a cedar deck that was stained with Behr semi-transparent water based stain in 2018. At least 50% of the stain has flaked off with the exception of the area right along the house that is more protected. We plan to stain with 101 Cedartone. From the other FAQ’s it appears we need to prep the deck with the following:

For prep, use this kit: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
With both additives: https://www.twpstain.com/wood-stain-strippers/rad-stripper-additives

  1. Do the products above seem to be the correct approach to prep?
  2. Do we need the additives?
  3. Do we need to power-wash the stripper?
  4. Do you have any other suggestions for me in order to be more successful?

Thank you!

We purchased and used the three products you suggested from your company and we are very pleased with the results. The Behr stain was tough to remove (like you said it would be) and it took a few applications in some areas and a lot of power washing, but we ended up with great results. Ready to stain this weekend. Thank you so much for your help!

The deck, which was heavily power washed, is fuzzy in spots and we are sanding it with some 60 grit sandpaper. Can we just sweep or blow the dust from sanding off prior to staining, or is there a better method?

I’m a little surprised since we just cleaned and brightened 72 hours ago and we were planning to start staining asap. We are not sanding off old stain but just smoothing out some of the imperfections in the wood caused from the process. Will the stain not adhere if we don’t clear/brighten? Thanks.

i just sanded our 1100 sq ft deck to remove old, faded, peeling solid stain. The upright floor sander didn’t quite get everything up. (Borders and small dents in wood and a few uneven surfaces). Do you think I can just use your stain remover to get the rest up? Like I said, the “solid” stain isn’t so solid due to the length of time, weather etc. much thanks.

We have a tiger deck that was installed in 2004 in Colorado mountains. we have been using Cabot timber oil semitransparent natural stain. every year we have powerwashed and just sanded again. The wood is in really good shape and has a nice grain but it always gets a tannish sheen after a year. I know tiger wood is a very hard wood. Do you think TWP would be good to apply.

Hi, currently I have TWP 100 Dark Oak on my deck but it’s time to do a recoat and want to go with the TWP Semi Solid stain.

1) What Semi Solid color would best match my existing TWP100 Dark Oak?

2) I have approximately a gallon leftover of the TWP100 Dark Oak, can I mix/add it to the soon to be ordered 5 gal. TWP Semi Solid?

I’m going to be using the semi solid stain on my very very weathered deck in northern Wisconsin. My understanding is that product may be available very soon. I’d like to get a head start while waiting by prepping the deck with the Gemini kit.
How long can you leave the boards prepped before staining since we don’t know when the product will be shipped. I can stay off the deck in the meantime and maybe just rince again with water. The next issue will be the cold evenings starting. If the nights start getting too cold to stain but it’s prepped, is there something to apply to get the wood protected through the winter? Or just reprep and stain in the spring.

We live near Seattle Washington and are planning to stain our pressure treated wood deck.  We are going to sand it and then use the Gemini Restore Kit. We are also trying to decide on which TWP product to use.
1)    Is it possible to sand first and wait a few weeks until we get the product before using the Gemini Restore Kit?
2)    Many people have told us to not use a semi solid stain because it will flake. Does the TWP Semi-Solid Pro-Series do this?
3)    I have noticed this product is not currently in stock. If we do decide to use this product, do you know when it will be back in stock?
4)    We are also considering the WP 106 Series Prairie Gray color. How is this different from the Semi Solid. I have read that it is different than the other colors in that series.
5)    What is the lowest temperature recommendation for staining?
Please advise.
Thank you

I live in southern New Hampshire and have a 7 year old pressure treated pine deck that was stained only once with an Armstrong Clark semi transparent light oak stain. The deck is in direct full sun and has been power washed and stripped and will be brightened. Is it ok to now apply a TWP stain or best to continue use with the Armstrong Clark stain? I like your honeytone semi transparent so would you recommend the1500 series?

Made the big mistake of applying TWP 105 (Cape Cod Gray) to our cedar deck and railing without first trying a sample! Doesn’t look good with our newly painted home. Also, the person doing the work didn’t do a good job of applying the stain evenly and only used one coat, not the wet on wet two coats. Looks terrible. When I order the Restore a Deck Stripper/brightener would it be best to also get the booster and/or additive?

A lil over 18 months ago I applied the TWP100 (5-gal-Cape Cod Gray) on PT deck. Needless to say..it’s time for its 2nd coat. Wife wasn’t a huge fan of the color. So, is it hassle free to use your new Semi-Solid Pro Series with a color she would be happier with?

Over the last 2 weeks I cleaned and brightened my screened porch using your products and instructions. I stained the uprights and then 2 days later (after waiting 30 hrs because of a rain storm, applied the rustic stain on the deck of the porch. It absorbed right away in most areas but there are several areas that have remained tacky for going on 3 days. We had rain again 30 hrs after staining the floor. Is it usual for areas to dry at different speeds? Is the tacky area going to be a problem? Should I take a hair dryer to it or continue to let it dry naturally? The rest seems to be beading with the application of one coat though most of it absorbed that coat so fast that I suspect if could use another coat. Do you agree? At one point can I put on a second coat?

I have a cedar fence that is 8 years old and was last stained with a transparent oil-based stain 8 years ago. I planned to use the wood cleaner/ brightener kit for prep and the TWP 1500 series stain. Is it ok to apply with a roller? Is there a certain type of roller that would be best? Do you think we will need to do a wet on wet application, or will a single coat be enough? I was planning to mix in a 5:1 ratio with CA redwood:Dark Oak. Any advice on the mixing?

I am deciding between using a stain pad or a sprayer. Does the sprayer give as good of penetration and last for as long??

Also, if I have about 1500 feet of fence and do wet on wet, i was thinking of purchasing about 12 gallons of TWP 1500…. Does that seem like the right amount?

I used a competitors stain on my new pool deck in the spring of 2021 on wood that had seasoned over the winter (Almost 9 months). So two summers and now it is faded and water is not beading any longer. It was a major brand and I guess not applied correctly from what I can gather from your site. I did not clean or prepare the wood. So I need some help! I would like to use your 1500 Rustic but what else must I do to prepare the wood? Please tell me what to order? I live in N.E. PA and plan to do this after I close the pool in a few weeks.

Do I assume (boy I dislike that word) instructions come along with the stripper and brightener? Such as, after use when to apply the new stain? I intend to do this soon so I will have September weather to deal with. Should I wait until spring? N. E. PA weather can be fickle in later September, October.

We have a deck with mahagony boards for the horizontal surface and IPE for the vertical balasters. We stained the deck 3 years ago with TWP 100 in California Redwood. It is now showing some fading on the horizontal surface and the balasters are showing some color inconsistency. We were planning to use TWP 1500 in California Redwood to recoat after cleaning and brightening. Is this a good plan? Anything we should be aware of to help this succeed?

I am in Canada and am therefore limited to the 200 series. I am looking for a lighter stain but do not want to go with the clear as my deck is south facing and the clear lacks UV protection. I am very concern the cedar or gold cedar will come out with a orange or yellow finish but am having a very hard time finding photos of completed projects in the 200 series. What color would you recommend for a lighter stain that will not come out yellow or orange. Do you happen to have a better color comparison of completed work than the small color swatches posted to this page – a youtube video of dried color comparison would be fantastic for the future. Are samples available to Canada in the 200 series? Thank you!

Hello. We have a can with some left over from a previous purchase. The description on the can is ” TOTAL WOOD PRESERVATIVE”, and the sticker for the color says” TWP 116 Rustic”. However, when I looked at your website, only your 100 series, ” TOTAL WOOD PROTECTANT” has the color 116 for Rustic. The code for Rustic for series 1500, ” TOTAL WOOD PRESERVATIVE” is 1516. I need to make sure that I will buy the right stuff. Is my old leftover 100 or 1500 series? I assume it should be your 1500 series

I have a large pressure treated wood deck with TWP 200 stain. It has areas of green moss that need to be cleaned. I want to cleaned it with power washer but don’t want to harm the stain. Restaining a pressure-treated pine deck that I previously stained three years ago with TWP. Purchased Restore-a-Deck package and TWP1500 honey oak. There’s visible green algae and dirt on portions of deck. Should I pressure-wash the surfaces to remove dirt and algae before applying the deck cleaner and then pressure-wash again before applying brightener, or is it sufficient to apply the cleaner and pressure-wash off? Also, I replaced a several step boards in June with new pressure-treated lumber. Should I wait until next year to stain those?

I just had some decking replaced. I understand that I should wait about 4 -12 months before staining the wood. That being said should I wait until Spring before staining, or should I do it before Winter. If I do it before Winter the wood will have only had about 3 months at most to weather and dry out. The Winters here are cold and snowy… Thanks.

Gemini RAD stripper application instructions state you can apply stain 2-4 hours after brightener, on damp wood. TWP stain instructions state wood needs to dry for 48 hours. This is confusing, which is it? Thank you

I have a 20-year-old log home in NH with 2700 sf wall area, previously maintained with Sikkens. Am glass-blasting with 20/40 grit just enough to remove old exterior finish. I plan to apply TWP 1500. I would appreciate some pro advice !

  1. I prefer the 1530 NaturalTone, but would the 1501 Cedar last longer due to the darker pigment giving better UV protection?
  2. Many people recommend smoothing the surface a bit after blasting. Is an Osborne brush driven by 7″ variable speed Makita polisher the recommended way, or will that interfere with the stain absorption ?
  3. After blasting/smoothing is it critical to apply a cleaner ? Adding a step with a 48-hour drying time is painful when it involves resetting 20-foot-tall scaffolding.
  4. Many people apply a borate solution prior to staining, but would adding your ‘bug ‘juice’ to the stain accomplish the same result ? It would save a step, which is extremely helpful.
  5. A web video about using wet-on-wet with TWP suggested that longevity is enhanced by working in as much stain as the wood would hold. This approach might reduce the coverage, and the 20/40 glass may also result in a rougher surface. How much stain will I need in these conditions ?

Thanks for the help !
