We are here to help you with your TWP exterior deck or wood restoration project for 2024!

TWP is an advanced wood preservative/protectant registered by the EPA. Performance and longevity can vary though depending on the wood type, how the wood is prepped, the age of wood, and how the TWP is applied. We want everyone who has decided to use TWP 100, 1500, or 200 Series to have the best possible results.

TWP Stain Tips and Help

When asking questions please give us some information about your wood restoration project:

  • What structure is your wood? Examples would be: Deck, Wood Siding, Fence, etc
  • What species is the wood? Examples: Treated Pine, Cedar, Redwood, Ipe, etc
  • Is the wood new or older than 1 year?
  • Has the wood been stained previously with a different brand? Please specify brand name and type of stain used: Examples: Solid stain, Semi-Transparent Stain, etc.
  • Any additional info that would be useful

Once you supply us with the information, we will able to give you advice as to how to prep your wood and any needed instructions for the TWP application.

Please ask your questions in the comment area.

Thanks

What is the best TWP 100 color to match our ‘new’ cedar deck? Deck was installed Sept. 2012 but due to manufacturer’s screw-up, new French doors had to be redone – deck not completed until Nov. 2012. Now want to clean it and finish it. Prefer a finish that matches the color of the red cedar as much as possible; understand that TWP 100 Clear does NOT protect against UV damage. Deck is in eastern Nebraska, faces west so significant sun exposure plus Midwestern weather.

I had a 31L x 41 W ( includes railings) built in Sept. 2012 of pressure treated pine. My questions are in regards to TWP 1500 series are: How much stain do I need for this deck, how much of a difference is there between the cedartone and pecan color, what is the difference between RAD restore a deck kit vs Gemini kit? I live in Pittsburgh, PA area and the deck has had snow and a lot of rain on it so far do you think the TWP will absorb into the wood?

I’m in central NC and I’ve got a 10-12 year old PT pine deck, but I’ve had to replace a couple of boards that were rotten. Deck was not maintained and I have put considerable effort into power-washing, stripping, then used a diluted bleach to brighten. Old boards are sound, but cracked and have maybe 5 – 7 years life left if I take care of it this time. I presume new boards will not match up well with anything but a solid – which I don’t want to waste my time & effort on something that will peel/flake. My wife wants the darkest color you can get… My dealer says 200 series but your literature says only “good” for decking, and that product seems to be best for shingles. whereas the 100 series is listed as “excellent” for decks.

What suggestions do you have for TWP product and color to make me and my wife happy?

Apparently the 100 does not come in Natural. Does it provide more protection to use a color, rather than natural, whether it be the 100 or 1500 series. Are the 100 and 1500 compatible for future applications

San Antonio, TX New Cedar Deck…just over 1 month old. 500 sq feet of horizontal decking (cedar). 200 sq ft of vertical skirting (weathered PT..repurposed old deck) We did receive 2 weeks of rain (14+ inches over 1 weekend) plus >100 deg days already so the deck is looking pretty weathered. I was planning on staining the deck in a couple of weeks with either 1520 pecan (wife’s preference) or 1503 dark oak ( my preference) Any opinions on color based on the pics below? Also, being this new, should I only apply 1 coat? any other thoughts?

Hi, I just had a 6 ft scalloped PTP privacy fence installed in the Atlanta area. I was thinking pressure-wash, then pump-spraying followed by back-brushing 1 coat of TWP 100 in honeytone to most closely match the existing color. Is that right and how long do you think it would last before I needed to re-do down the road? If the fence is 250 linear ft, would 15 gallons do it? I keep reading conflicting reports of coverage. How long after pine is pressure-treated should I wait to apply the TWP 100? Thank you.

I have a 2400 sf PT deck with railings. I have used SW Deckscapes with very poor results. The areas exposed to the weather are peeling so I should be able to get the old stain off. Some areas not weathered still look good. Will the stripper get enough of the old stuff off in the areas that are not peeling? My house is painted a very light gray, I would use the 1500 because it has more solids but there is no gray. What color would you suggest? I have the same concerns about the verticals, which are not peeling. Will the 100 cover or will I have different colors when the lob is finished.
Thanks

I HAVE A HUGE DECK 1500 SQUARE FEET WITH NEARLY 500 BALLISTERS AND 3 LARGE ARBORS ON THE DECK. I PREVIOIUSLY USED BEHR PREMIUM STAIN AFTER PROPERLY PREPARING AND STAINING IN THE RIGHT CONDITIONS. THE STAIN STARTED TO PEAL ON ALL HORIZONTALS THE FIRST WINTER. THE VERTICALS HELD UP TO A CERTAIN DEGREE. I ORDERED THE RESTORE A DECK 2 STEP PROCESS TO REMOVE THE OLD STAIN AND RENEW THE WOOD. IT WORKED ON THE DECKING BUT THE VERTICALS ARE NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO STRIP WITH MUCH SUCCESS. I PURCHASED TWP 1500 TO APPLY FOR MY DECKING. WHAT I HOPE THAT I CAN DO IS TO APPLY A MATCHING COLOR EXTERIOR HOUSE PAINT OR ACRYLIC STAIN (THAT WILL STICK TO THE BEHR STAIN THAT I CAN NOT REMOVE). ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Hello, I live on The California/Nevada stateline. The local paint store that sells twp is located in California so they only stock the 1500. I can drive approx 30 minutes into Nevada and get the 100 series. I will be applying the product to a peeled pine exterior railing that gets lots of sun, rain, and snow. Should I go with the 100 or 1500 series?

Hi. Last fall I purchased a 19 year old home in northern Indiana that has a large front porch 40 x 6 and a huge deck on the back of the house that has built in bench seating. In total I have approx 800 sq ft of deck. This deck has never been stained. The previous owner applied Thompson’s water seal to it but that was it. The back deck that is huge is very gray and has mildew/mold on it. The front porch is still kind of tan and has some discoloration only along the edges where the flowers shade it. I have purchased a restore and brightener product. As soon as that arrives, I will be using it. I want to purchase the TWP stain but am not sure if I need TWP 100 or 1500. Also, is there any thing else I need to do in order to stain my deck? Will the stain apply well to a very grayed deck? Any suggestions?

Deck: 550 sq ft
25 yr. old, wolmanized. Good shape.
W. Bloomfield, MI
Please see picture

~3 wks. ago, power washed –> stained w/ TWP 103 (3gal)
-painter blames the stain (although TWP 100 series was ranked highest–>that’s why I picked it).
-double stained in at least 2 areas (see pic)
-uneven everywhere (can see roller marks, cut-in’s, etc)
-totally unprofessional job
-painter says “it went on like water. I used every last bit you gave me (3gal).”

-I’d really like to fix this without a full strip–>wash–>condition–>stain–>seal process.
-CAN YOU MAKE THIS SEMI-EASY?

Thanks,
Marc

I just put two coats of TWP 1500 rustic oak on our deck railings yesterday (wet on wet). It’s an older deck, so I followed the 2 coat wet on wet suggestion. I think the color looks beautiful, but I think it’s darker than I imagined it. I’m worried that applying it to the deck floors will make it too dark for my liking. Would applying only 1 coat to the deck floors help lighten it up a little? The railings seemed to absorb 2 coats just fine. Or would putting just 1 coat on the floors just make the stain not last as long as well as giving me the same color as the rails? Thanks in advance!

I am planning to stain for the first time a 7 month old cedar deck with TWP. I have already prepared the wood using another company’s Deckwash solution to remove dirt and mildew, which is basically sodium hypochlorite. It brightened and cleaned the wood. Is this sufficient to now stain with TWP? The other company also had an Oxalic acid product I did not use for reviving older decks that had grayed, but mine has not as it is mostly in shade.

I recently applied TWP 1500 two coats brushed wet on wet and any extra wiped with a stain rag. The deck was prepped correctly by stripping all old stain off and brightening. Sanded with 80 and washed again. Then allowed to dry in 90 degree temps for 3 days. After applied the stain dried for 6 days before getting rained on lightly. After the water dried there are places that look like they are dirty and turning black. Why is this happening?

I recently stripped and brightened sanded and washed a cedar deck. Waited over48 hrs of 80-90 degree weather to dry. Then applied 1500 twp redwood stain. Brushed the whole deck with two light coats and wiped excess with stain rag. The Deck Dried for 5 days with no rain. Yesterday it rained hard and now after drying there is a dirty looking spot. Tried lightly scrubbing and it wont come off. I think its tannin stains. I feel like the TWP allowed water to penetrate the wood causing these stains. Please help.

I have a 10 month old, pressure-treated pine deck (over 600 SF). I used a natural oil preservative when it was 3 months old, but the hoizontal parts have not held up. The elements have “stripped” what protection there was away. Is a simple cleaning adequate preparation? Should I use 100 or 1500 TWP? I live in SE Pa.

I am getting ready to stain my front porch and wanted to get some ideas about which TWP product I should use. The porch is yellow pine and it is about 7 months old with a smooth finish. I want a stain that is not too dark, maybe just a little darker than natural. Thanks

I am staining a cedar deck with TWP 100 series. It is 12 feet off the ground. I was not going to stain the underside of the deck but I was going to stain the underside of the steps because I thought it might look better from the ground. Would staining the underside of the cedar steps cause the wood to hold water and do damage to the steps?

I have a pressure treated deck that is 7 years old. I only stained the deck floor with ONE TIME about 3 years ago. Recently I cleaned and brightened the whole deck. Some of the ONE TIME is still in the deck floor and seems to have penetrated deeply. Will TWP still penetrate?

We have a 15 yr old pressure treated deck that was stained years ago. We alos have a beech tree next to it that turned it quite dark. I have pressure washed the deck over years that has removed the stain back to the original wood but the railing is still dark. What would be the best stain for this.

I have a pressure treated fir deck that is two years old. I put one coat of Lifetime on it when it was 6 months old. I need to know if I should use the Gemini cleaning kit and if I should use the 100 series or the 1500 series TWP. I live in Gunnison Co (very cold) and the deck is both covered and in direct sun.

I just stained my cedar deck with TWP 100 after cleaning twice with remover and a power washer, then applied restore and let the 6 yr old deck dry for 3 days. It rained 4 days after application of TWP 100 and the water beaded up in pools and is still pooled afer 4 days is this the expected norm??

I have a 4 year old cedar deck originally stained with Rymar oil based semi-transparent that was restained after 1 year. It never help up well. This spring I power washed and sanded off old stain. Railings were done day before with 2 wet-on-wet coats and look great!!! Very unexpectedly started raining within 1 hour of doing deck surface with 1 coat and rained for 2 days. We thought we would have 6 hours or more before rain. Surface is now shiny in some spots, residue on surface on cupped boards with minor cracks and lighter in areas with less time before the rain. What should I do? When and how would be good way to recoat to look more like rails?

I have used TWP 106 on a covered screen porch in NH which has held up well (17 yr old pressure-treated wood ), but it now has some scratch marks in the main traffic pathway where people have dragged their feet with bits of sharp stones from a hard-pak driveway.

What is the best way to repair this?

(A) stain and wipe off the affected areas

(B) sand the affected area, stain and wipe

(C) clean entire deck (how?) & restain all even thought rest is OK (not my preferred but…)

(D) other?

I am a little confused over the TWP products. We have a 10 yr old pressure treated pine dock on a lake. We are looking for the best product you have. It was treated with TWP clear several years ago. Do you suggest the 100, 1500 or Storm Shield? We live in a state without environmental issues.
Also, do you think we will find the walnut color much hotter on our feet than the clear?

Hello –
I need to restain 7 year old cypress clapboard siding (installed in 2006). It was originally “factory” pre-finished on all sides with Cabot’s redwood semi-transparent stain which I believe is oil-based. Nothing has been done to it since and the finish has weathered off on the south side. Some minor graying on the south side, better condition and only fading on the other directions, We are in the Catskill mountains in upstate New York, not a severe environment, but very changeable.

It seems like the cypress is very dry and needs to be fed as well as stained. The cypress flexes a lot (pulls out its stainless steel ringed nails) and has horizontal cracks in some places. We would also like to change the red to a more brownish shade in the hopes that it won’t fade so much

Which of your products would you recommend? How long can we expect it to last? Any installation suggestions?

Hi There,

I don’t think my last post went through, so I’ll try again. We are getting ready to put a new floor on our porch. We are using tongue and groove old growth Douglas fir. It’s been kiln dried and has been stickered and sitting on our porch for a week now. Our porch is on the west side of our house and is in the shade until the afternoon when it gets some dappled sunlight. The boards at the top of the steps get a few hours of direct sunlight. My questions are: How much longer do we need to let the wood season before we stain it? We were planning to stain all four sides of the boards before putting them down and then, possibly, another coat after they’re installed. Is this the correct way to do the job? Should we do two coats before we put the boards down? We were thinking about going with the 1500 series because we want some color, but still some of the grain showing and UV protection. HELP!

Hi, I have a brand new cedar deck 10x 18′. Do I prep it with Gemini, restore a deck then

I have a cedar deck, 6 years old and just removed the Behr latex stain. It was badly worn in one part which received much sun. I used stripper, then powerwashed it, and lightly sanded to remove the residual stain. The directions on the TWP can says to wash the boards three times on separate days prior to applying the stain. Why do we need to do that? Is that all I need to due prior to using TWP?

Thanks,

Eric

Hi,

I am refinishing my deck. It is about 6 years old of treated pine and it is about 400 sf. It was never sealed. I have cleaned and sanded the deck and am ready to stain/seal.

I am not sure what color would be best. I am looking for something fairly natural, but maybe with a little more color that the yellow that it is now. Does the cedartone look good on treated pine? Would you recommend another color?

Also, how much product would I need for two coats (if necessary)?

Oh, and I will be replacing one board with the same treated pine. Can I stain it immediately or do I need to wait for the new board to cure?

Thanks,
Liz

I was applying twp 101 to my deck and some sections dried before I got back to them. this makes it appear as sone have two coats and others dont. It appears glossy in the areas that got the overlap.

What is my best course of action ? A second coat to even it out ? It appears uneven looking.

I have 400sq/ft: A couple of questions in determining the correct amount: The website indicates 150-300 square foot coverage per gal.: Question #1: Is this ONE COAT COVERAGE or is it based on the assumption that a wet on wet application is recommended? Depending on that answer and assuming I’ll need two coats, I’ll either need 5.3 gallons or 2.6 gallons; a bit of a wide disparity; This is a well maintained deck of about 8 years that I have treated mulitple times and just completed washing and sanding (almost looks like newer wood at a distance, but I would imagine it’s fairly pourous at this point). FINAL QUESTION: Assuming I have leftover product, is it ok to store in a garage that may freeze during winter?

Having just read a post indicating that the CLEAR has NO UV Protection, I’m assuming that the honeytone would be the next most “natural” looking on a pine deck? (already washed and sanded).

Purchased a house in Western NC. The home is about 5 years old with large decks and cover porches. Had to replace some of the decking in the exposed deck as it was splitting no longer serviceable. The decks were originally stained with and unknown product but from the appearance of some areas seems to have been of fair quality. The previous owner recovered some areas that were exposed to weather with Minwax? The areas that are covered actually seem to have faired pretty well. The material is treated pine. So Several questions. Removing the old material? Recommended new product? Can colors be mixed to achieve the desired shading?

Thanks

I used the Gemini restoration kit on our new (6 month old) cedar deck. The cleaner worked well but, afterwards, the wood surface is covered with soft almost hairlike wood fibers. I am concerned that this may affect the penetration when I stain the deck (TWP 1500).

Should I sand or take other steps to remove the excess fiber before staining?

I have a 12 year old pressure treated deck that we stained with a semi transparent stain about 4 years ago (Super Deck). The deck is graying now and a couple of the boards are curling up. We just had our house pressure washed and they washed the concrete drive and the decks. the wood looks better now but we want to stain it with TWP 100 (Alabama). Will it be necessary to strip it and brighten it or can we now just use the TWP?

I have a new deck made of kiln-dried, treated pine. I live in NC. The deck was completed in fall 2012. My builder said that I should seal it quickly since it was kiln dried, but the weather was never quite right. I had already chosen TWP based on reviews and after reading the new deck prep it looks like maybe it’s good that the wood weathered this long. I realize I need to prep the wood with Gemini first. Should I stain it now or wait longer? Should I choose TWP 100 or TWP 1500? I am going to use clear because I like the natural gray that happens over time. Also, the deck comes off the back of my house and is high so I have big supporting posts… do I need to seal those, too? thanks!

I’ve been using the TWP 100 series for several years now and am very happy with the results. I do have a cleanup question and any pointers would be great. I have a deck with black metal deck spindles. They work great, after we are done with all the railing we just go over the metal spindles with a rag to wipe off the drippings. However I have just noticed that this time around we missed the inside on several of the spindles. It’s been a couple weeks after application that I noticed this but would really like to get the stain of the black spindles. Do you have any ideas of what I could use. The spindles have a glossy finish which I believe is powder coating. Thanks again for any information.

I have a 20 year-old cedar deck. I’ve just power-washed, then professionally sanded the entire deck, removing ALL traces of previous stain. Prior to doing that, I replaced approx. 10% of the boards due to their poor condition. The new boards have now been in place for 4 weeks. They, too were sanded. If I apply a deck brightener now and then wait another week or 2, can I stain the entire deck, or everything BUT the new boards? Since I’m in NY, I’ll be using TWP 1500 series. By the way, how many gallons for 450 sq. ft, including top rails?

I live in NW Montana. Have a new fir deck adjoining an existing deck. Steps to the deck are treated pine and they too have been treated with Sikkens SRD. Total surface area is 150 ft sq. Part of the deck receives afternoon sunlight and rain. Part is totally protected from UV and rain. Existing deck was stained With Sikkens SRD 077. Want to remove old stain and apply new TWP to both. Should I sand off the Sikkens and do some sort of cleaning beforehand? What type of TWP should be applied? Can I get sample colors to try? If so, how? Thank you.
