Need Some Help With TWP Stains?

by TWP Help

Last Updated on January 30, 2023 by TWP Help

We are here to help you with your TWP exterior deck or wood restoration project for 2024!

TWP is an advanced wood preservative/protectant registered by the EPA. Performance and longevity can vary though depending on the wood type, how the wood is prepped, the age of wood, and how the TWP is applied. We want everyone who has decided to use TWP 100, 1500, or 200 Series to have the best possible results.

TWP Stain Tips and Help

When asking questions please give us some information about your wood restoration project:

 • What structure is your wood? Examples would be: Deck, Wood Siding, Fence, etc
 • What species is the wood? Examples: Treated Pine, Cedar, Redwood, Ipe, etc
 • Is the wood new or older than 1 year?
 • Has the wood been stained previously with a different brand? Please specify brand name and type of stain used: Examples: Solid stain, Semi-Transparent Stain, etc.
 • Any additional info that would be useful

Once you supply us with the information, we will able to give you advice as to how to prep your wood and any needed instructions for the TWP application.

Please ask your questions in the comment area.

Thanks

I cleaned, then stained my deck two years ago with TWP 100 (pine). It still looks good but I want to clean it and then maybe even seal it to prevent water damage. What do you recommend?

Russell, best to prep for another coat of the TWP. You would need the Gemini Restore Kit for this: http://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit

Deck cedar color stain faded through winter – Last summer we used 2 gallons of TWP1501 for our deck. The deck was installed in May and we waited until September to stain. We cleaned the deck as described and stained; it looked beautiful. We’ve had a hard winter in New England and finally all the snow has melted and the deck color has faded considerably, it looks rather freckled. I certainly hope we don’t have to strip the deck in order to put on another coat this year. Can I just order move TWP 1500, clean the deck with the mixture of bleach and water and re-stain in the normal fashion. It’s my understanding that a deck should be re-stained every 2 years or so and I assume it’s the same process all the time. I appreciate your help!

Thanks, Irene

This year you should lightly clean the deck to remove dirt and apply a light coat to the horizontal areas. Do not use beach. Use a mixture of soapy water or you can use the Gemini Restore Kit as 1/2 normal concentration.

Old wood- not sure of species- doesn’t appear to have been stained previously
Did use Thompson water seal about 4-5 years ago- seems to be all gone
Wood has greyed in most areas
12×12 deck with about 13 steps to ground
Planning on getting redwood (5 gallon can) twp1500 or 100 <– which would be better?
Should I use geminin cleaner and brightener
or should I use a stripper and brightener?
Will be pressure washing either way.

Terri T, make sure the old stain is removed or stripped off. Look at the Cedartone or Honeytone colors. TWP fades though the years and does not darken in color.

Hi, I’m building a fence with vinyl lattices and 1×4 pine boards sandwitched together as the frame. My question is, should I stain it before or after assembly? Most I read online say after assembly. My concern is, if I stain after assembly the inner contacting surfaces of the boards would not get any moisture protection. Will that be a problem?

Best to stain after install. Inner contacting surfaces will not be harmed.

I recently received a sample of TWP 120 Pecan Sample. I applied it to a small area and it looks darker than I expected. I know the colors seen on the site cant be exact because I am viewing them on the computer. Will it appear lighter once the entire fence is stained? Since you have two different types of siding it would be best to use the 1500 Series for this. It will offer better UV protection and more color options as well.

Hi, folks! Pressure-treated southern yellow pine, 650 square feet of floor, plus additional railing and spindles. 20 years old. A few hours of direct sunlight per day, but mostly dappled and/or shaded light, protected by a large silver maple. I live outside Chicago, IL. Deck has been power-washed and treated every two years with “DT2000,” a natural (clear) sealant exclusive to DeckTech, the company that handles my work. But they’re charging nearly $1,000 for that work now, and I’d like to do it myself to save $$$. I don’t know anything about DT2000 except it works very well, and has a pungent oil smell upon application. Thoughts on which of your products (100 vs 1500) and amount I’d need would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Reply to  Shane Gericke

Shane, they are actually using what is called a RADCON formula of the TWP 200 Series. It is a concentrate that they “thin” with mineral spirits or similar. The most similar for your area would be the 1500 Series or the 200 series. The 100 is not VOC compliant for IL.

Shane Gericke

Thanks for this, TWP, much appreciated. Is the 1500 or 200 series “weaker” than the 100 because of the VOC rule, or do they protect just as well?

Shane, not weaker but slightly thicker. They work about the same.

Thanks for this, much appreciated! Does the 1500 series protect as well as the 100 because the VOC is lower? Also, how is the natural different from the clear? I’m not sure which version the installer used, since they both are clear-ish.

I coated a one year old (new pressure-treated wood) 21 x 33 deck w/railings in Northern New Jersey (partially shaded) last year with TPW 1500 California Redwood last year. It did a very good job. Deck looked wonderful. This year it looks like railing cap and the deck itself need a recoat. I realize the old coating needs to be stripped, but assume that some of the removed stain remains beneath the surface thereby allowing somewhat less new stain to be used. Is that correct or must I follow the new wood recommendations after stripping? And how many gallons would you recommend for this recoating?

TWPStainHelp

GerladM, Are the railings fine and just the horizontals needing a coat? If so you may only need to do a maintenance coat. Use the Gemini Restore Kit for prep and apply one coat to the horizontals. One 5 gallon pail should be enough.

A few years ago I used TWP 200 for my deck (at the recommendation of your local distributor, even though it’s not specified for decks). It has worked very well, but I need to refresh some areas. Does it still make sense to use 200, or should I use another? The color I have is 207 (Butternut Brown), but I don’t see that offered in your other stains (e.g., 100 and 1500).

I would suggest staying with the 207 Butternut since it is already on the wood and there is not a matching color in the other series.

Just had TWP 1500 (CA Redwood) applied to my pressure treated pine deck 2 days ago. The deck was finished in July of 2013 so it weathered over the summer/fall/winter.
Unfortunately 2 coats were applied so some areas had excess buildup that did not penetrate. These areas have now mostly dried up to a sheen. What can I expect from the sheen areas at this point and should I do anything to them or let the weathering naturally work them out?

Thanks and great product by the way.

TWPStainHelp

Michael, at this point you can just leaver those areas alone. If you want you could wipe done the excess shiny spots with a some mineral spirits to remove some of the excess. Hard to say if you will or will not have an issue with those areas. Only time will tell.

Michael, it will not become sticky. Filming/shiny areas can prematurely wear though. This usually happens in high traffic areas and or extreme weather.

TWPStainHelp

Once you apply the Step ! cleaner you need to heavy scrub or lightly pressure wash off the dirt, grim, and oxidized wood fibers. It will not come “clean” unless you do this. Using a pressure washer at a low setting is much easier and more efficient then scrubbing. The grayer or dirtier the wood, the more you will need to work at removing the oxidized wood fibers. In your scenario I am assuming you are not using the required “pressure” to get the wood clean. Once again this needs to be done with heavy scrubbing or pressure washing at a setting below 1500 psi.

You can rent pressure washers from local stores.

I used the TMP 300 dark oak on a black bamboo fence in a Japanese Garden. I preferred the black bamboo natural color but wanted to protect it. While I am ok wit, but not in love with the stain color (a little more reddish) I am not happy with the high gloss as it takes away some of the authentic feel of the bamboo . What would you recommend for removing some of the sheen? Thanks in advance for your help.

TWPStainHelp
Reply to  Bernard

Bernard, TWP is not supposed to have a sheen. If it does then the stain did not penetrate into the wood and rather dried on top of the wood. This is typically a result of over application. You could try wiping off the excess stain with some rags and a little mineral spirits. Saturate rags with water when done to avoid spontaneous combustion.

TWPStainHelp

Drew, if it is clean and has not grayed then you should be okay to stain.

Best to not let the stain freeze overnight. 50 is fine but if drops below 32 and the stain is wet, you could have some issues.

Not sure why my first attempt to ask for help did not work.
1) we are attempting to use restore-a-deck which we purchased here on a fence of California redwood that has been allowed to age to just under a year.
2) one side has lots of leeching from the irrigation sprayers on that side of the fence.
3) one application (step 1 and step 2) in general has seemed to clean and brighten most of the fence, however, the badly leeched spots remain light grey. We are following the instructions on the canisters religiously/verbatim.
4) do we spot apply the cleaner again (step 1) or also the brightener (step 2)?
5) is there something else we should try?
Thanks. I look forward to a quick reply.

Please HELP.
So we’ve done this and have used up 4 bottles of Cleaner (Step#1) — over twice as much as we expected to be needed based on the bottle — and still have a 1/2 bottle of Brightener remaining. The result is that some segments look closer, but some look OK/close, and others still do not look alike. What do we do now? Do we buy yet another bottle (pay shipping and await another 5-10 days for its arrival) or switch to a different cleaner?

The other thing we’ve discovered is that the instructions assume that a fence (vertical) surface can be treated and will respond akin to a deck (horizontal) surface. It is a totally different problem. Running and streaking (of cleaner, loosened black/dirt, etc.) occurs on the vertical, and they impact anything lower and will also do so on both sides of the fence.

I am confused by your reply. First, the wood came straight from the Mill last Winter when the fence was built.

And then… (a) There are several places where the “Directions” do NOT state that powerwashing is required but do state to use a a brush, and to mist or fan tip or rinse down, and given that it is a verticle surface, that is what we’ve done.

Also, (b) this reply to a different user (also here at your Website) seems to reiterate the need to wash it down with at least a mist…
Coverage can vary widely depending on the condition of the wood. The dirtier and more grayed out the wood, the less the coverage. You do not need to reapply the cleaner from drying out, just mist with water.
…and does not recommend the power washer.

Finally, (c) I know that TWP 1500’s product sheet does say to power wash it, but it also says to use bleach, and I’ve read elsewhere that both can negatively impact any wood preservative…
After aging, wood should be cleaned with a solution of 1 part household bleach to 1 part water. The bleached surface should be thoroughly rinsed with water, power washed and then allowed to dry a minimum of 48 hours in good drying conditions before finish coat application.
… for example,
[bold]Why is cleaning with a bleaching solution preferred over power washing the fence?
Power washing removes a fine layer from the surface of the wood compromising its integrity. The end result of this process leaves a rough texture including splinters on the surface of the wood.
…so no, we’ve NOT been powerwashing given that I don’t want to do anything wrong that we cannot recover from.

So are you saying that we now need to buy a (low) power washer to complete the cleaning? I say “low” since I think I recall reading it should be under 1500 psi, correct?

I stained my pine deck with TWP 1500 (looks great!). My next project is to build a wooden gate to match. When I buy the wood, does it matter if I get the wood pressure treated with Weathershield (Home Depot)? If TWP protects the wood similarly (Weathershield claims to protect wood against rot, decay, and termite damage, and is less corrosive to nails and screws), I would prefer to get the plain wood. Weathershield gives the wood that ugly grayish-greenish color.

Roy, TWP protects the exposed surface area. Using a wood that is either naturally resistant (Cedar) or chemically treated (pine) helps tremendously with internal rot and decay protection. Since it is a vertical gate it will though have a much less chance to rot or decay.

Wish to match this on the pine trim.
What solid/semi solid is an approx. match to the Rustic brown stained red cedar.

Also, for Miami, Florida for pressured treated deck, do I need to
give it two (2) coats of the TWP 100?

Also, for approximately 200 SF of deck, how much of TWP 100 do I
need to purchase?

Is that applied with brush or roller?

Thank you very much,

Mercedes

Mercedes, the Honeytone is lightest tint. Two coats wet on wet is best. For 200 sq. feet you would need about 2 gallons. Applied with brush or stain pad applicator.

I am building a new home. I will be using western red kiln dried cedar for the siding. Tongue and groove 6x1in boards. Will be running them both horizontally and vertically. EVERYONE has been telling me (builder and lumberyards) that I should stain all the wood prior to installation. Your website says the opposite. With siding, if I do not pre-stain, the back of the siding will never be treated. Is this ok??

fred, no need to stain backside, just the exposed sides. With TWP you should wait 4+ months to let the wood weather, prep correctly, then stain.

HI, I have a rainbow play system, about half weathered 7 yr old wood and half new due to rot warranty replacement. The new wood has factory finish, which is total crap, and the weathered wood has TWP 1500 applied over factory finish. I lived in California at the time. I am now in North Carolina. Sounds like the TWP100 is the better product for me. Can it go on over the 1500? Can I apply now in winter – kids are anxious. My goal is rot prevention. Thank you

byrone, best to not apply on top but rather remove the old layers with the RAD Stain Stripper and a light pressure washing. Apply brightener when done. Use the TWP 100 Series. Can be applied at 45 degrees.

OK, thank you, just so I understand:
RAD Stripper (NOT CLEANER), then brightener, then 100 stain.
When I reapply in a couple of years, same process or can I apply 100 over 100 with just a simple cleaning?

byrone, you can apply the TWP 100 on top of itself by after a proper cleaning. No stripping is needed.

Have new, never been finished mahogany front door that I need to treat with TWP 1500. Lot’s of confusing and conflicting instructions on how to prepare the door: one site says need to weather and dry out for 4-12 months before treating. Another talks the use of Gemini Step 1 cleaner & Step 2 brightener under the section “Prepping New wood” which doesn’t make sense for a new door. On the product sheet it says wet door with water (even rain water) and let dry out and repeat with water. That kinda makes sense to help open up the wood but wouldn’t I need to re-sand the door if wetting it raises the grain-and wouldn’t sanding it essentially re-clog the pores of the wood? I would appreciate clear instructions on how to best prepare this new mahogany door before applying TWP 1500. Thank you. Mark, Cincinnati

Mark, best to weather for a few months then use a wood deck cleaner for the prep.

I had a brand new deck made of fir wood, and put down about 16 months ago…We live near Cape Cod in Mass… It was stained with, I believe, one coat of Arborcoat Semi-Transparent decking stain.
Large sections show fading and deck looks to be gray in many parts, with non-faded area retaining the original rust-brown? coloring…
Confused as to whether I need to use stripper, and then brightened, and then apply TWP stain.
I really want to find a stain that will give me a few years between coats( doesn’t everybody?)
Had considered Skillens, but many unfavorable review there!
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Jethroneal

jethroneal, you cannot apply the TWP on top of the Arborocoat so you will need to remove that first by either stripping, sanding, or combination. Once the wood is prepped properly you should get 2 years or so on the horizontals and twice as long on the verticals with TWP.

Fence: 6ft pressure treated pine (241 linear ft of kiln dried Yellawood)
8 weeks old
Nashville, TN

90% of the fence is in direct sun all year from sunrise to sunset

Would you recommend TWP100 (better penetration) or TWP1500 (more solids) for this fence?
Should I apply with a pump (garden) sprayer? Rent an airless sprayer? Roller? The wood seems too rough for a pad.

Should I apply 1 coat now and clean/apply another coat after 1 year?

Does my math look right? How much extra should I order?

241 linear ft * 2 sides * 6 ft tall = 2892 sqft / 200 sqft per gallon = 14.46 gallons

Thanks…todd

Todd, best to apply two light coats wet on wet for this with the TWP 1500 Series. You will need more like 20-30 gallons for the sq. footage. 150 sq. feet for first coat and 200-300 for second. Spray on first coat lightly and follow with a second coat with a stain pad or brush within 60 minutes of the first coat.

Ordered 30 gallons, but only used 15 gallons. Applied the first coat with an airless and rolled on the second coat. The wood simply wouldn’t take anymore stain. How long will unopened 5 gallon pails keep? How should it be stored? Thanks…todd

Unopened and the TWP will last many years. Keep in area where it will not freeze or reach extreme temperatures.

Thanks

I am currently putting up cedar board and batten siding on my shop in western Washington. The cedar is rough cut and will not be stained until early spring. Reading about the TWP 100 series stains has definitely caught my attention. My question…I want to keep the sharp color and grain of the cedar as long as possible and do not mind reapplying every few years to do so. Basically, the beautiful boards I have, if I throw some water on them and rub it in, that is the “color” I want. Do I use cedar tone for the most “real” colors? Or?

Matt, Honeytone is the closest to a “wet look” with water color.

Hi- 10×20 cedar deck. Contractor built it and used TWP 101 the same week. Within 2 months huge areas have started to peel like a sunburn. What happened? How best to repair? Thanks!

New wood is supposed to season for 4-12 months and prepped first with a deck cleaner and wood brightener. Your contractor applied to soon. Best to wait until Spring, use the Restore A Deck Stain Stripper and the wood brightener for the prep.

I stripped and cleaned my deck 2 days ago — it looks like it’s going to rain on and off for over a week. I’m in Florida — will mold start up in that amount of time? What do you recommend?

Al, it should not start to mold in a weeks time. Wait until the wood is dry, then apply the TWP.
