Tips on Applying TWP 100 Pro Series in 2024
TWP 100 Stain Series Wood and Deck Protectant has a coverage rate of 150-300 sq. ft. per gallon, per coat. Best to measure the wood’s square footage to determine how many gallons you’ll need for your project. On wood decks, be sure to include all the railings and steps.
Before applying TWP 100 Series Deck Stain be sure the wood surface has been cleaned properly using a wood cleaner. Use a broom or leaf blower to remove any debris that may have fallen onto the wood since cleaning it.
Applying TWP 100 Series Wood Stain
The wood must be dry for a minimum of 48 hours prior to staining and the air temperature should be above 50 degrees. Check your local forecast to make certain there will be several dry days before and after the day you want to stain.
On the day of staining be sure you have all the equipment on site that you will need. Wear protective gloves and safety glasses at all times. Mix the TWP Wood Stain thoroughly using a paint stick before and several times during use. Using plastic or tarps to cover any landscaping, siding, windows, or concrete that you don’t want any stain on.
Start with the harder to reach areas first. On wood siding, gazebos, or playsets start up high and work your way down. On a deck, start with the spindles and railings first and stain the deck floor last.
Use a brush, stain pad applicator, or pump sprayer to apply TWP 100 Deck Stain. The first coat of stain is a saturation coat. If it soaks in quickly, and the wood seems thirsty, an additional coat may be necessary. If so, apply the second coat within 30 minutes of the first coat, essentially applying them “wet on wet.” The more TWP 100 Series Stain that you can get to soak in, the better protection it will provide.
Be cautious of over-applying TWP 100 Series Wood Stain or performance may be jeopardized. If you notice excessive stain puddles or drips that aren’t being absorbed, use a stain rag or brush to remove them. Stopping in the middle of a piece of wood or board can result in unsightly lap marks. To eliminate the chance of lap marks finish staining each board from end to end once you start.
TWP 100 Series Wood Protectant has outstanding penetration properties and will dive deep into the wood. It is not prone to flaking or peeling like other stains. TWP 100 Series will simply fade after several years and can then be cleaned and recoated as needed.
Question re. maintenance for deck after applying TWP100.
I have cedar deck stained using Sikkens BRD, which will be removed following instructions from Sikkens. Based on reviews I plan to have the deck stained w. TWP 100. Can I re-apply TWP 100 next year (if needed) on top of the coating to be applied this year on the cleaned, sanded cedar? I learned that Sikkens BRD CANNOT be recoated (no second layer of BRD can be applied on the initial one); one needs to fully remove it first before applying any stain on the deck. This is very costly and I do not want to use something that has this restriction. Please let me know if TWP 100 allows re-coating (applying another coat on existing TWP 100), after some washing. Thanks.
You can apply light maintenance coats of the TWP as needed after cleaning first.
Thank you.
welcome
I live in Colorado and had a new cedar fence installed 4 weeks ago. is there any prep that needs to be done before applying TWP100?
also do I apply 2 coats wet on wet?
Is the cedar wood rough sawn or smooth cedar?
You do not have to wait when stain rough sawn wood. Go ahead and stain now.
Just regular cleaning will be fine.
I have 1000 squar feet of pressure treated pine and I will use the TW100 and I want to apply with a Pad. How many Pads do you estimate I will go through?
Depends on the condition of the wood but 2-3 should be enough.
Contractors applied TWP100 to a new Tigerwood deck. after two days and some rain there are clear visible water marks all over the deck after drying.
Is this normal? Was this due to a wrong stain application?
Is there any way to get rid of them without doing the whole cleaning/staining process again?
Thanks
You will have to start over. In addition new wood needs to season for 4-12 months and prepped correctly first.
Hi,
Did stain deck with cedar tone, found orangish ,want to change to honey tone 1500 ,in 2 years , should we strip then or just clean “
If you want to go lighter in color you will need to strip and brighten for prep first.
Can I apply TWP 100 with an electric sprayer?
Yes you can do that.
I doubt you will see fingerprints.
Do you have any photos of a deck finished with prairie grey?
We do not but we do sell small sample bottles.
May I apply TWP 100 series when daytime temps exceed 90F? I plan to apply when the deck is shaded and temps are below 90 but later in the day the temps will climb above 90 and the deck will be exposed to sun. Thanks.
It will be harder to apply when in direct sun and above 90. It can be done but if you do not move fast, keep a wet edge, and apply evenly, then you may have issues with how it dries. We cannot say it is okay as we cannot control the application.
Not sure if that will help but most likely will minimize the stain from absorbing into the wood. How about staining all sides than stand the boards up on the ends, leaning into a wall or similar?
I am going to try leaning the pieces as you suggest, with the exception of the longer pieces which I do not have the ceiling height to accommodate.
I realized that I have the opportunity to support many of the pieces where they overlap with other pieces when the play system is assembled. So any marks left by the supporting 2 x 4’s should be covered up.
I will try to handle the pieces as little as possible after staining, but will need to move them from the saw horses to the 2 x 4’s or to lean them against the wall. Should I expect to see finger/rubber glove prints after moving them? If yes, will I be able to eliminate them with additional brushing?
It might have been slightly over applied. I would just leave it alone for another day or two.
Yes it is possibly that the 2×4 will leave marks if wet stain is on the wood. Probably best to stain, let dry, than flip boards to do the other side.
If I stain 3 sides, let it dry, then flip to do the other side, will it be noticeable that the stain was applied at two separate times? The pieces have rounded edges, so it won’t be real easy to keep a consistent stopping point along the edge.
Would covering the supporting 2 x 4’s in plastic help? The thought being that the plastic would keep the 2 x 4’s from “soaking” the stain out of the pieces?
I finished application of TWP Cedartone 101 at 4:00 p.m. when it was about 80 degrees here in NC. We got an unexpected rain shower about 10 hours after last coat. The water seemed to bead on the wood. What is the shortest dry time w/out rain to prevent stain from failing? Also, is there anything I can do at this point?
Leave it alone. Most likely it is fine.
Did you wait 4-12 months after deck install? Did you only apply 1 coat to the new wood?
Yes, we waited seven months. However, we were told to apply 2 coats, wet on wet. Second one was VERY light.
Zack, you over applied ti this way. Try wiping done the TWP with mineral spirits to speed up the drying process. It will dry eventually.
It will definitely look more even if you brighten the wood. I would suggest this.
I have a large deck to finish..approx 1000sqft of deck. It has never been stained and was built 7 years ago from PT Fir . I have 10 gallons of TWP 100 Rustic that I want to apply. I used a deck cleaner yesterday but still have some green algae that is still visible…the deck still seems dry and ready to accept stain. Am i ok to begin staining or do i need to strip the deck? Ill attach a few pics if i can
You only strip if you have an old stain. Did you brighten the wood after the cleaning?
I haven’t use brightener…. Should I? What about the algae…should I be concerned? Thx
Is the algae on the wood or in the wood?
It didn’t come out with cleaning … It’s left the wood with a green tinge as shown in the pic I uploaded. Thx
Apply the brightener and see if that helps. It might not be algae in the wood but rather the pressure treated chemicals.
If I stain as is now … Will I notice a difference in the final product or will it not make a a big difference ?
I have a new pressure treated pine pergola. The cape cod gray looks to be the way I want to go. What feedback regard peeling/flaking have you had with the color?
Bob, please read article on new wood prep: http://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
If you wait, prep, and stain properly than you should be fine.
Stained my deck last year with TWP…..2 coats with OK results…. I wanted to recoat to improve the look and protection. Can I just water clean and apply another coat a year later?
Yes you can do that. Just clean to remove dirt and reapply.
1000 sq.ft. pressure treated deck here in Mich. Built it 2 springs ago. Haven’t treated it at all since. Would the Gemini two-step treatment be appropriate before putting down TWP100, or…?
Yes the 100 Series would be best and the Gemini Restore Kit with a light pressure washing.
cool…thx
I had a brand new pressure-treated pine deck built in my back yard, and they finished it around April 3rd (today is April 22).
1.) What type of TWP Stain would be best?
2.) When should I apply the first round of stain?
3. How many coats should I use the first time around?
Please read this about new wood: http://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
We had to replace a few boards before re-staining our deck. I noticed it says new wood shouldn’t be stained for several months, but we need to stain the entire deck now as it’s extremely worn. Will pressure washing help to prep the new boards? Any advice/tips?
Janey, prep the the deck as needed for the older boards. You can stain all now but your new boards will be lighter in color and the stain will not last as long on those. The newer boards will need a touch up in a year.
I am building a garden swing out of select kiln dried cypress. Do I also need to wait before using TWP 100? The wood was stored indoors at the lumber yard. Thanks!
Yes as you want the natural oils in the cedar to dry out some and you want the mill glaze to be removed.
Will I get good results applying TWP 100 series to a fence with an airless sprayer rather than a pad or brush?
You can apply with an airless sprayer with no issues but you may need to back wipe the second coat for uniformity.
The weather forecast was calling for “sunny and 65 dipping to 45 at night, but literally an hour after finishing my 16×24 covered deck with TWP honey tone tone, the forecast changed to 48 dipping to low 30’s with the wind from the NE, my deck faces NE. Since my deck is covered I decided to “enclose” it with plastic sheet. Will this help? Or will I have to strip it in the spring and restrain? Spokane WA
Parick , I would just leave it alone. You need airflow to allow the stain to properly cure.
East Coast Farmer, it is hard to say for sure but I would continue and pay close attention to the area that was already stained. Make sure it dries into the wood and dries does not dry on top of the wood.
If daytime temps will be in the 58-63 range but a couple of night temps will be around 32, should I wait to apply TWP 100 series?
MG, You do not want the temps to drop below freezing over night if the stain has not had 4-6 hours of drying.
I have a deck that was built in 2009 and stained with some unknown stain before I purchased the house. Needless to say that stain failed and I recently stripped and brightened with RAD. I’ve been waiting for good weather in the NW to apply TWP 100 cedartone and yesterday I applied a single coat and fully back brushed. I think it looks pretty good but I didn’t read about a second wet-on-wet coat until it was too late. Should I apply a second coat now or should I wait until spring, clean and re-apply?
Doug, best to wait until Spring. Light wash to remove dirt and apply one coat.
Had a deck built in February and am now ready to stain. Live in South Carolina, which would best protect the pressure treated pine, the 100 or 1500 series?
I would use the 100 Series. Make sure to prep the wood first.
Hello….we are renovating a 1934 barn which has not been painted since then. We want to preserve the exterior 2×12 wood as best we can. The original red paint is faded, even gone in most places….but I feel the colors on the old barn are wonderful and I want to keep it that way….yet preserve the wood. I am wanting to use the TWP 100 natural/clear product on it. What do you think. I have been told I could probably not have to removed the small lichen in places or really clean off the wood, that the colors and all would be preserved. What is your opinion? Thank you. Judy
Judy, TWP is not a top coat that can be put on red paint or stain. If you would like to use TWP then you must remove all coatings and clean the wood.
I have an old deck, it was strained before I bought the house, some areas are peeling off and there are mildew spots. I’ve just brush-cleaned it with some deck cleaning liquid. Can I apply TWP 100 stains on top of the old stain? I am in Dc area, is this TWP 100 a suitable strain?
Mike T, no you cannot apply TWP on top of an old stain. It must be removed first. TWP 100 is not compliant for DC. only the 1500 Series.
I was hoping to stain my deck last weekend but the weather didn’t cooperate. I am trying to get it done ASAP and it will be try but the night time temps will be below 40. The day temps will be in the 60’s. Will this be a problem?
Jeff, no those temps are not an issue at all.
Great Job!
I am planning to stain my new 12 x 20 cedar deck with the TWP100. Because it is new i will clean and brighten the wood before staining, then put a single coat on it.
The stairs and decking is total about 300 sf, so how much stain will i need to include the rails as well?
Should i just restain once the first coat stains over time, or do i need to put another coat on in a certain amount of time? Will it need to be stripped and cleaned when i do this?
What is the total sq. footage when you add the railings?
Brooks, a day to clean and a day to stain if you are using proper tools and the weather cooperates. Two of the Gemini Kits for the prep and about 8-10 gallons for 1 coat of the TWP 100.
Am curious why an opened 5 gallon can of TWP will go “bad” in a year, but leftover 1 gallon TWP (resealed, of course) is fine for years (or so the sales rep told me…so will use in the coming years…). Will my partially used can of cedartone TWP (and have a another unopened one..) still be good to use down the road??
Thanks!
Pat, the 5 gallon lid does not close 100% so it will go bad from evaporation of the solvents.
At what point do old coatings of TWP 100 need to be stripped instead of just cleaning when prepping for a new coat.?
Jess, if you have a buildup of TWP that when you apply a new coat it will not penetrate properly it should be stripped and started over with clean wood.. Usually after the 3rd or 4th time applying TWP.
Pressure treated pine deck 6 months old, will pressure wash be okay before using stain,
Norm, use the Gemini Restore Kit with the pressure washing. It will prep better.
I’m planning on treating my deck however the website instructs that the deck must be dry for 48 hours. The problem with that is that the climate where the deck is, can have dew in the morning because of the humidity. Most of the time the dew burns off by 10 or 11. IS this a problem? My second question would be the deck will power washed before application and is being washed due to the gray condition of the wood and hasn’t been treated in several years. Which product would be the best for this deck?
Mike, it should be okay if it is a light dew. Look at the TWP 1500.
I have a large deck to stain. How does one put the first coat on and then come back for the second coat without stepping on the first coat(this is a 10 year old deck)? We have kept the deck stained over the years. Deck is covered by trees etc.

Is twp 100 redwood a semi-transparent stain
Jay, yes it is.
Jeff, yes you can use it on CCA pressure treated pine.
Is TWP 100 Wood Stain semi-transparent and is it Oil based?
Wendy, yes to both.
Caryn,
1. Yes that is fine.
2. Cleaner and brightener for the prep is the correct way.
3. No you can switch to the 1500 if need b latter down the road.
Thanks for your quick response. Also, to clarify: for wood this new and untreated, only one coat the first year…is that correct?
Caryn, yes that is correct.
And in this case you put another coat on in a year? Do you have to go through the cleaning and brightening stage in a year, too?
Also, is there any reason i would want to consider using the 1500 if I live in a state where I can use the 100?
Thanks again for your help…
Caryn, light cleaning for prepping the wood for another coat of the stain next year. I would stay with the 100 for yours.
I just had a new Pressure Treated Pine fence (4,430 sq.ft) installed in GA, and will get full sun exposer, so I am wanting to use a darker tone rich color. Any advice you can give will be greatly appreciated.
Roderick, please read this articles:
http://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/ http://www.twpstainhelp.com/tips/need-help/twp-color-tips/
Mark Lorenz, it will go bad in an opened container in less than 12 months.
Live in San diego just finished putting up a redwood deck. Love the dark pinkish colors. Would this product substantially alter this natural tone?
Jay, all TWP colors will enhance or change the appearance of the wood grain. How much depends on the color you choose. New wood cannot be stained right away. TWP want you to wait 4+ months then prep with the Gemini Restore Kit.
I’ve had the wood sitting for about 8 months prior to installation. It is pretty dry by now. Can you recommend a color that will have the most minimal change to natural redwood color? Most of the redwood color stains are too red for my liking. I was thinking honeytone or natural would be best. Also, would you recommend 100 series or 1500 series for San Diego climate?
Jay, you can only use the 1500 for CA. The Honeytone is the lightest tint.
Can I use the TWP 100 Series Stain in Virginia? If not, does the Natural color in the 1500 Series have any pigment in it?
Pat, not in northern DC area of VA. The 1530 natural is pigmented.
