TWP Stains and Moisture Content

Moisture Content of Wood When Applying TWP

Whether the wood you are staining is new or more aged, the moisture content is an important factor in the timing of stain application. Applying TWP or most any wood stain for that matter to a wood surface that is still holding too much moisture can result in many problematic issues. Trapping moisture in wood can promote the growth of mold and mildew. A moist and mildew infected environment can lead to wood decay and rot. This should be avoided at all costs. Wood rot will most likely progress to structural damage causing expensive repairs and replacements.

After the wood surface has been cleaned and prepped correctly prior to staining, it should be allowed to air dry for several days depending on the age, condition, and porosity of the wood. A good rule of thumb is to let the surface dry for several days before staining and do not stain if rain is expected. A deck that is mostly shaded may take a day or two longer to dry than a deck that sits in full sun all day. Weather and climate can also be a factor.

TWPStainHelp.com Tips: TWP Stain Application is Spotty/Shiny and How to Fix

Staining a deck can be a challenge. There are some common mistakes that can occur that may greatly affect the final results. One such common mistake is over applying the stain.

With TWP Stain it is recommended to apply the stain using a brush, roller, or some type of sprayer. If the wood seems very thirsty, you can apply two “wet on wet” coats. TWP is a penetrating stain so you should never apply more stain than the wood can absorb. Once the stain as had 20-40 minutes or so to penetrate into the wood, you should go back and wipe away or back brush any puddles, drips, or runs.

TWPStainHelp.com Tips: It Rained on my TWP and How to Fix

When applying TWP Wood stain to an exterior surface, it can be a battle with Mother Nature to find an adequate weather window. With TWP Wood Preservative it should not rain within 12 hours after applying. The stain may not be affected by a little rain especially if it has soaked into the wood already. But in the case of significant rain, it can have an effect on the stain’s appearance.

If it rained on your TWP and you want to know how to fix it here are some tips. After getting rained on still allow the surface to dry for at least 24 hours. Only then will you be able to see the extent of the damage. Because water and oil do not mix, the rain may not affect the appearance as badly as you think.
