I didn’t see much on using TWP on hardwood. We have a Brazilian hardwood deck and I’ve used Ipe Oil, and Penofin, but they hardly lasted a season before they started to darken/fade. Will TWP work better on hardwood? I was thinking of 1500 but would appreciate your advice. Thanks!
Exotic hardwoods like IPE will require annual reapplication. No stain will last longer than that.
I have a 22 year old deck (pressure treated pine) & live in Atlanta, Georgia. I have pressure washed and sanded all boards and spindles down to the bare wood. Which TWP product would you recommend that I use once I begin the staining process? Thanks in advance for your guidance.

I have a 5 gal pail of TWP1500 left over sealed how long can I keep this in the garage and still be good to use , will not freeze it stays about freezing?

We waited a full year to tackle the deck. We have a cedar deck . We stripped it with deck stripper and then the conditioner. Waited till completely dry. Sanded and applied the first coat. We then waited a week and applied a second. Now this year the stain came mostly off of where the knots are . what should we do now and why did this happen.

It is normal for knots to be lighter in color due to the density of the wood there.

Is the 1500 series cedar stains oil
or water based ?

Within the last two weeks I stained my deck after completely sanding it down to the bare wood. I previously used TWP 1500 oil stain and it turned black soon after applying. After two weeks applying TWP 1500 again it has started to darken again. I am applying it to 5/4 treated deck boards. The deck is not in a shaded area and gets strong sun most of the day. Any suggestions on how to retain the finish and keep it from turning black?
TWP does not darken in its own so something else may be causing this. Feel free to reply back with a picture.

Looks like something to do with the sanding, almost like burn marks. How did you sand? Did you clean and brighten after the sanding?
I used a floor sander with 80 grit and 120 grit paper. I then cleaned it with deck wash and let it dry for two days while I sanded areas I couldn’t reach with the sander. I didn’t apply a commercial brightener. As I stated previously, this occurred when the deck was first stained after building it. I presumed at that time it was a result of staining new flooring material.

I have 4 year old redwood deck. We have just sanded the entire surface and washed it without a cleaner. Is it necessary to use a cleaner prior to staining?
Yes, clean and brighten. Helps the stain to soak better into the wood.
I am staining a 14 month pressure treated deck for the first time and cleaned/brightened the deck with the Restore a Deck product sold on this site. I used the 1500 Series – Dark Oak. I applied with a brush to get in between the boards and a roller for the rest. After a week of drying the results look very blotchy and I wanted to ask if this is normal or if it is a result of uneven application. If it was an error on my part how can I resolve? Also, it rained shortly after I finished and in a few spots I see circles that resulted. Is there a way to fix those now or should I just wait for the next time I stain the deck in a year or two?
Looks like a combination of uneven application and the rain. Good news that it just the floor. Leave alone for now. In The Spring do a light wash with the Gemini cleaner to remove the dirt. Use 3-4 oz of powder per gallon of water. Apply one coat of the TWP in the same color. It will even out.
Just to add to this, I ran out of stain halfway through the horizontals last year so there was a few weeks apart from when I was able to buy new stain and complete the deck. Where I overlapped on boards when I finished the second half the stain took much darker as shown in the pic below (I assume because that was like that areas’s 2nd coat). I just want to confirm after cleaning the deck and applying a second coat this year on the entire deck as suggested above, that that should also even everything out. Thanks!
To even this out, best to strip and brighten for prep.
I was afraid to hear that and definitely do not want to strip. If I just clean and apply a maintenance coat how would you describe the potential outcome? Should that do a pretty decent job of evening out? And over time as the deck fades and I restain will that eventually completely even it out? Or is stripping the only option here?

What is the best product to use on cedar shingles on my home. They are 30 years old and I last pressured washed and applied an Olympic oil base stain which held up great about 10 years ago. I plan to pressure wash the shingles and would like to know what product you would recommend for a stain. I love the look of wood and would like to use a semi transparent stain so the beauty of the wood still appears. Would greatly appreciate your advice. Thanks, alan

When and how can I apply a second coat, after l have applied wet on wet the first time
Hello, I am not understanding your question? If you applied a wet on wet application then you did apply a second coat.
I applied two wet coats, at the point of refusal. I backed brushed and product looks great. This was a month ago, and where I coated new decking, it looks like it could be stained again. When and how do I apply another coat?
Next Spring at the earliest. Lightly prep first.

TWP works very well for Redwood.
We have 1 year old pressure treated pine deck in NC, never treated or stained yet. Use deck prep or restore-a-deck prior to staining? Can use TWP 100 but prefer lower voc 1500. Any downside to using 1500 here? And since this is first deck treatment, just one application or 2 (wet on wet)?
Use the Gemini Restore A Deck Kit. No downside to using the TWP 1500.
deck is brand new with KILN DRIED pressure treated pine. Can this be stained immediately – have had conflicting answers.

i have a 36 year old redwood deck. It’s been painted for several years and we just sanded off the paint. I want to put a stain on it but don’t want to put tons of time into it. There is lots of discoloring. Can I just pad on the TWP 1500 and be done? Getting tired of this deck and want to get back to life. Also, can I use the deck after 12 hours?
You have to remove 100% of the paint before using the TWP. You should also clean and brighten the wood after the sanding with our Gemini Restore Kit for the final prep.
I am preparing to treat my log cabin again. Used a TWP 300 series 10 yrs ago and TWP 203 5yrs ago and will use TWP 1500 this time. My request is for a recommended caulk or chinking. Used PermaChink last time and have to constantly repair it due to separating.
Hello, there is not recommended caulk for the TWP. Best to check with your Log Home supply stores to see what is best for your separation issues.
Stained my log home with TWP 1500 ( Redwood). Took me 6 weeks at 12 hours a day. I’m almost done. Looks great,i get lots of compliments. Wore out 5 -4″ brushes. I highly recommend TWP to anyone wanting a high quality stain. I added “BEE GONE ” to the stain before i applied. Carpenter bees are a enemy of log homes. One bite and they die. Here’s a picture after i finished to garage end of the house.
That is the old instructions and they have since switched to the Gemini Restore Kit for prep.
Here are some pics of the redwood mini-deck-stairs we did to the lower yard. (Calif) New wood (sat 3 months 3 months) Re-sanded all surfaces, except legs, right before oiling. Legs were done with Behr, you will see they are more yellow. Hated It! (15 years ago I like Behr, but new formula?) So I read up and ordered TWP 1530 natural after getting a couple of samples to try. Love Love Love it! If the pictures load you will see diff between legs with Behr and rest of project. This was a 10 by 10 deck with stairs. We ordered 5 gals. Have half left. Will use in a year to re do flat surfaces. We used 4 inch brushes. Husband and I took 5 hours. Wipe up excess as you go. Note drip in pick three under banister. Also, be careful with rags. See last pick of partially combustion on rag-pile in middle of dirt yard. Our bad by not cleaning up properly! Pictures are loading sideways. Sorry.

15 year old deck restored to new!
This is not a short story. Over the years I may have tried every cleaning and staining option known to mankind. Power washing. Hand scrubbing. Soap-based cleaners. Bleech-based cleaners. Staining with the “good stuff” from the big boys like Benjamin Moore. Cheaping out and using Home Depot options. Every solution was mediocre but accepted as “the best I could do.”
Two years ago I treated a corner of the deck with TWP 1500 natural. I read some reviews online and was intrigued but skeptical of this “penetrating” stain. The results were astounding, while the rest of the deck was faded and dirty, the TWP 1500 treated portion was still vibrant and bright.
This summer I bit the bullet, I used TWP cleaner and brightener and then re-stained the entire deck. It’s a big job (my deck is 1,100 ft.²), but the results are incredible.

I used the 1500 in the Honey color 2 years and it is time to redo it. It was applied to our cedar deck.

Best stain that I have ever used. In the past we used Behr stain. It peeled within a year. The TWP did not peel at all, just faded a little. We are going to scrub the deck down and reapply to the floor.
What should I use to clean? Bleach?
Samson, bleach is actually bad for wood. Best to use the Gemini Restore Kit to prep the deck before reapplying.

Why does the Gemini product data sheet for TWP say to clean the surface with a 50/50 mix of bleach and water?
